Nice bit of fabricating. Is the cheap folder any good? I keep thinking about getting one but not sure how good it would be. Its bloomin brilliant mate! Mine is 650mm wide....just enough for this sort of job...£67 on Amazon....its a “clarke” Now I have it in front of me i can see how its made and will be making a larger (wider one) in the not too distant future....For my needs at the moment its ok but to get a 1200 mm folder new off the shelf is a big jump in price.....so Ill be making mine If You have time whilst in Hungary pop over and we can make a pair of them

Hi all....no major progress to report but lots of pottering in the workshop and some little victories, firstly Before chopping up my newly fabricated chassis crossmember I thought it may be wise to temporarily refit the engine and box in order to confirm the extent of any clearance issues. To make it easier to fit the gearbox to the engine I firstly removed the clutch. Mmmmmm nice! Ill be fitting a new one of those then! Engine and box reunited it was time to see if the gearbox touches the chassis Excellent it turns out there is plenty of clearance so no chopping or splicing will be required other than a very small amount of gentle hammering down of the area arrowed in the pic. The next task was to unseize the handbrake mechanism which I will then have to somehow mount on the new crossmember as per the original. Wow..Ive dealt with some rusty seized components in my time but this was in another league! In my youth that would have ended up in the bin due to impatience and “over hammering” but the years have taught me that expensive or unobtainable parts require perseverance and a gentle touch Buoyed by my success I decided to see if I could loosen the nuts holding the inlet/exhaust manifold on....all the nuts came off except one. I didn’t like the look of the thread on that so decided to try a trick I saw on my favourite youtubers channel Basically you drill the side of the nut 2/3 through Split it with a chisel And You’re good to go! Much better than snapping the stud off in the cylinder head..at least Ill have a fighting chance of removing the stud so I can replace it without resorting to drilling it out! Incidentally look for “mustie1” on youtube great source of practical advice and tips if like me you are unskilled/inexperienced with the oily bits of a vehicle. If Like me you prefer the bodywork side of things the have a look at “cold war motors” both excellent resources which I find usefull and strangely meditative to watch.

Now I feel I should explain why Ive only been “pottering around” doing little odd jobs on the azu instead of really getting on with the chassis The fact is that in order to really do any serious work I will need to separate the body from the chassis.....on a 2cv saloon that is an easy job to do by yourself by “walking” the body off...heres one I did earlier Now obviously a saloon body weighs a lot less than a van body so Ive been dreading this procedure Howevar it has to be done! And whilst I could just round up a posse of men (or indeed women) I'm stubbornly determined to do it by myself Stupid i know..but thats me!! I just love it when I can achieve the seemingly impossible Self reliance innit? Anyway thats the next job Ive decided to take on .....of course I have a plan....A complex cunning and probably stupid plan...but this chassis needs welding and I cannot weld it properly whilst its got a 350 kilogram bodyshell sat on top of it! After all there will most certainly be an awful lot of “butt/plug” welding required Incidentally I would say to anyone who is currently tittering at that phrase....”you really need to grow up and drag your minds out of the gutter”

Oh, there is interest on my side actually, but I´m more of the silent watcher type. I like those old corrugated tin vans, and those AZU's are not (yet) that over the moon pricewise like their bigger brother HY. Although... a friend has one parked up in his garden and thinks his might be worth 12k €s! I would not consider that cheap either. Atm I would like to know what angol is, like in balatonangol? Angol is Hungarian for English. Apologies for not responding sooner braaap but as austinpowers said “angol” is Hungarian for “English” my wife Katalin is Hungarian and as well as teaching English in a local school also manages to look after me..our two kids...and run her own business....teaching English

Hm, which car has more rust, the old french or the not-so-old spanish? Hi braaap which spanish car are you referring to....could it be the Seat marbella listed on my signature? If so You know as much as I do mate as despite the fact that its only 120 km away I haven’t really looked at it properly (ie underneath) since 2000 ad....it looks mint on top and I will be bringing it over to my house very soon (thread to follow) as I'm in the process of selling the property in which it resides as well as a couple of other “classic” vehicles ie wrecks which are also festering there. I'm prepared to wager an imaginary sum that it won’t be as rusty as this “azu train wreck though”

Cool van. Can you get bits for them? Yup getting parts is not a problem....the fact that my money is always spent before it’s earned Is a problem That is why my threads are “slowly slowly” and why I rely heavily on resourfullness and duct tape

Hi braaap which spanish car are you referring to....could it be the Seat marbella listed on my signature? Actually I meant the KA - to my knowledge and I migt be wrong here they were produced in spain. I hadn´t even noticed the seat in your sig - that might become interesting, too, rust-wise.

Actually I meant the KA - to my knowledge and I migt be wrong here they were produced in spain. I hadn´t even noticed the seat in your sig - that might become interesting, too, rust-wise. Produced in sunny spain eh? That probably explains the lack of rustproofing then! With that clarification I can answer your question unequivocally......In my experience I would not hesitate to say that the rust was far far worse on the Ka! Not just in comparison to the azu but indeed in comparison to Any vehicle I have ever owned or worked on. Bearing in mind the age and low mileage of the Ka plus the fact that it was always garaged....If I’d known the extent of the problems on the Ka I would never have started fixing it!..... Ill tell you what though....the ford Ka is just one of the nicest best handling cars Ive ever driven....great fun and corners like its on rails! One of the best drives Ive ever had was when I drove that Ka the eight miles back from the test centre with the pass certificate nestled in the passenger seat! I'm sure I had a bit of rust in my eyes as they were both leaking tears They say that pride comes before a fall but let me tell You I was very proud to hand my mum the keys and a freshly issued mot certificate Anyway i hope that answers your question and if youl excuse me ill just......OUCH...ive just fallen over!!..... ....well that just goes to show !

Right...you’ve all been there I'm sure....there are days when You spend eight frustrating hours unseizing three bolts on your project...then the next day you spend one hour and make a massive amount of progress! Today definitely falls into the latter category for me! You no doubt remember all my high falutin talk about building a body dolly and lifting the bodyshell off the chassis all by myself? So the first order of my day was to perambulate myself to the local diy emporium in order to aquire some heavy duty castor wheels That done I then set about undoing the nuts and bolts securing the body to the chassis......then thought Id have a tentative lift of the body to assess its weight... Hmmmm not actually nearly as heavy as I thought it would be! Much pontificating then ensued The result of which was that I formulated a plan......a plan that did not include the recently purchased castors nor the recently reclaimed 2x4 s nor the new nuts and bolts purchased upon this very day! Never mind all that nonsense I thought...what I actually need is a trolley jack and a “scabby mattress” Now bare with me because this next bit is pure unadulterated genius I headed back to the house to asses “the lay of the land” excellent.. my wife and eldest daughter have just snuggled up to watch a Sandra bullock film on netflix! Acting very casually I sat down for a couple of minutes pretending to “enjoy” the film before remarking that “this looks good but the volume is a little low dear” shall I turn it up? After all..we do have surround sound! Yes dear that would be nice my beloved wife acquiesced... With the volume now cranked “to the max” I suffered another couple of minutes of Sandras mewling voice before I slipped away unnoticed Those two minutes we’re undoubtedly tough but all part of the plan! Stealthily I headed up to the recently refurbished “guest bedroom” grabbed a mattress and lobbed it off the second floor balcony!

So when I come to visit you, which of the two houses will you be in. The main house or the dog house?
You could always say to the wife that the Citroen wasn’t well and you had to put it in to the recovery position. And of course you can’t just leave him on a cold damp floor. So you needed the mattress to keep him warm and comfortable, while you perform emergency surgery with a angle grinder and a welder.
What bit of furniture are you going to use to put the body back on?
