I'll tell you the bad news first: My friend couldn't get hold of the trailer to tow the car to his lock up. So, the new plan is to try to get through the test so that I can drive her over. It's a bit of a mad plan but I've got a feeling it just might work (As long as I fix that oil leak first). Good news is that I finally got hold of a gearbox: I had to do a 120 mile round trip but the bloke offered it to me for a good price and all seems to be well. Shout out to Andrew! Here's the box: Temporary gearbox storage area: Next on the list is to get that rocker cover gasket changed and grab some new boots. I'll keep you updated.

More progress. Feeling good this week... It was cloudy and humid this morning in Somerset. The car doesn't look too bad from 10 feet away! Immediately found the source of the leak. I am aware that the valve cover bolts aren't supposed to be too tight but these were literally loose. So I just turned them off without any tools. Underneath I found this: No idea how much oil is supposed to be in there but it looks ok to me. The car is not parked on the level so I'm assuming the pools of oil are something to do with that. The oil doesn't look like it's been changed in a long time though.. I carefully cleaned around the top of the head where the seal would sit. The seal really needed changing, it literally cracked and fell apart while I was removing it from the cover. After cleaning the cover up it was all ready to go back together. I also realize that I really, really need some new tyres...

It's been an eventful week. Made some real progress. I needed to get the car down to my local tyre place. She hasn't moved in a month so the battery was totally dead. I borrowed a battery charger off a friend and got to work. The battery tray doesn't look great but it's still solid and most of that is surface rust so I'm putting this on the less urgent list. Battery on charge with plastic tray for safety! After a few hours the battery started to bulge slightly and I was not happy so it promptly got taken out to the shed. Luckily Euro Car Parts had a battery sale on and they were offering a rebate for used ones. Everything was going well until my order disappeared from the system. Ended up being a two hour trip. Also picked up a few other bits while I was there, Front indicator unit etc. New battery fitted but the central locking no longer works. That's another thing for the list. Fired right up so off I tootled to the local tyre place. The 205 was easily the smallest car there. Basking in the sun after a two mile drive. Baby steps... On the way home the car starting stuttering under acceleration but it's fine on idle or running at a constant speed. I reckon that the fuel filter might clogged up with curse word from the bottom of the tank. A mate is popping over tomorrow to help diagnose the issue. Once that's fixed then I might be able to get it tested.

Managed to get a mate over to help me diagnose the stuttering issue. If you were hoping for photos; Sorry, it was bucketing down so I didn't take any. Ended up changing the fuel and air filters which smoothed out the engine but it didn't help the stuttering. We managed to bypass the fuel pump and filter individually and it was idling nicely but we couldn't get it to rev smoothly. So we think that it's either one of the sensors around the auto carb. It's could also be a vacuum issue to do with the intake pipe (it's the type with the flap) or leads/ignition system could be knackered. Here's a photo showing where we think the problem could be. So basically, we're a bit stumped. It seems like it should be a simple fix though. Have any of you guys got any suggestions? Thanks!

If it's on acceleration, it could possibly be dirty spark plugs. Certainly worth a check first, but leads shouldn't be too expensive to replace. Not sure it'd be a coil, as I would of thought your car would run poorly even at idle.
Failing that, I'd guess at an idle control valve. Engine temp sensor, or a lambda sensor. But start with checking the plugs and leads, and see how you go.

Got some new spark plugs which I'm going to fit on Monday along with some new vacuum lines if they get here in time so hopefully that will improve things. A new engine temp sensor is probably a good shout especially because the fan doesn't click on at the moment. We've tested it so we know that it works. Thanks for the info!

Just so you know, on the Tu engine you have, it's a single point injection throttle body not a carb And the stuttery acceleration is more than likely a temp sensor, however! If my memory serves, and you have a Haynes manual, there's a 2pin diagnostic plug in the engine bay, should be green. There's a simple thing with an led bulb you can do to make it show fault codes. Mine was a 1995 but both are injection so yours should have it.

Thanks for the info! Temp sensor is next on the list but I'm buying somewhere at the moment so most of my spare cash is going towards annoying house-related fees. I'll keep this thread updated best I can though.

I'd definitely look at the engine temp sensor in that case, as JoshO also suggested. As I had the same on my Punto a while back, the fan didn't cut in when the engine was hot. Tested the fan, changed the fan switch and thermostat. Nothing.. as soon as I changed that temp switch it was working fine. You should be able to pick one up for about a tenner, so not bad but every penny counts with buying a house!! Good luck with the move and hopefully the 205 will be running great again soon.

Friday is payday so I'll grab one then. Then we'll see if I can get the old one out of the engine! Cheers for your help, guys.

Progress may be slow for a while but at least there is some progress. Changed the rear light glass for one that wasn't cracked. I also found some rear end damage and a bit of rust but lets not talk about that....

It actually stopped raining yesterday so I got a chance to swap the engine temp sensor. Couldn't believe ho easy this job was to do. Old one being removed New one fitted And with that, she revs freely with no stuttering, went on a short drive down the lane to test everything out. Drives great, apart from the knackered box of course.. Photographic proof! The boot is becoming a dumping ground but it'll all be sorted soon

Nice one, glad the sensor did the trick.
When you do the clutch, it might be worth spraying the clutch cable with some spray grease to lubricate it.
As I find on my 106, it makes it a lot less stiffer.
There again, maybe I just need a new clutch!!

Work on the car has been moving forward slowly. The main aim for the last few weeks was to make her MOT worthy as I wanted to get her tested before we move house. Started by switching the broken indicator on the driver's side front. I'm not going to tell you how long it took me to figure out how this came off: Replaced with a cheapy modern remake part but it matches pretty well and looks good enough: The day after my mate popped over to help me drain and change the coolant. That pretty much happened without incident. We were chatting away and having a laugh so I forgot to take any photos again. After a final cooling system bleed and checking that all the bulbs were working I called my garage. Unfortunately the revving issue reared it's head again on the drive over there so the mechanic said he'd take a quick look while it was there. Good news is that she passed. I know: I can't really believe it either... The mechanic adjusted the throttle cable a bit which helped a lot with the revving but she's still a terrible cold starter. He diagnosed it as the idle control unit so I've picked up some carb cleaner to try to clean it out over the next few days. If not, I can still buy them new off the shelf. Parked in the street: Later that day I took her for a run up to Leigh Woods and took my bike. Probably the most rewarding experience I've ever had. Thanks for everyone's help here so far!

I sort of knew what I was getting myself in for with this one: it was owned by my neighbour across the road. I used to have a 205 GR but this one is much fancier. They're always great to drive. Can be thrashed as long as I go easy into second and skip fourth!

Updates! (From about a week ago) I tried to clean out the idle control unit but had no luck. So I ordered a new one from Germany.. The odd revving issue I had is gone for good but it now idled really badly so I decided to try and isolate where the issue was. I sealed all the joints on the intake up with some aluminium tape. I then fired her up and she was going ok for a couple of minutes on my test drive so I was feeling confident. Went to start her up for a longer drive later that day and she was not having any of it. I promptly parked the car up and didn't look at it again until today. More details to follow in another post tonight/tomorrow.
