Battery tray is common on them, as is the inner arch behind the filler neck. Rather than messing about trying to fix the orginal calipers you'd be better off binning them and trying to source a couple of later ones. The later set up uses larger pads so goes a little way to improving stopping. Do you still need a grill badge? I might have one on one of my spare grills yep mine has gone there too. I imaging that's gonna be a pain as will need to remove the tank etc.. that sounds a pretty good plan 're the brakes, will look into it. I do indeed need a smgril badge, if you do I would happily take it off your hands Removing the tank isn't all that bad, I've lost count of the amount of times I've had to do it on my own. Get the rear end up a decent height on axle stands and have a decent jack to lower/lift the tank into position and it makes it fairly straight forward job. I'll have a look thought my parts and see what spares I have 👍

Its the drilling that's the ballache, I've swapped tailgates in the past to avoid it. I killed an early-ish breadvan last year, skipped most of it tbh, too many cars and a 40' shipping container is easily filled. Got decent brake callipers, later type lying around, everything else is just thrown in boxes so could be anywhere

Its the drilling that's the ballache, I've swapped tailgates in the past to avoid it. I killed an early-ish breadvan last year, skipped most of it tbh, too many cars and a 40' shipping container is easily filled. Got decent brake callipers, later type lying around, everything else is just thrown in boxes so could be anywhere yeah I did imagine the measuring and drilling what be the pain... hmm thinking maybe no now! 40'shipping container sounds a lot, but I imagine it could indeed be filled pretty easily! (He says thinking what he would put in it!) Calipers would be very much appreciated, I'll PM you and we can form a plan of some sort. I would keep the tank if i were you, grateful for the thought though. And veey rmgrateful for any and all parts received, calipers will be a help for sure! My tank is ok atm, I however should the opertunity arrive will also find one to to keep 'in stock'

oh I love these, I had a B reg in tornado pink. It ended up with the Janspeed exhaust off my mini project and did 60k miles all of them flat out, sold it on with 135k on it. When I bought a Golf GTI 16v, wHich felt like a spaceship by comparison. Headlights were terrible tho, but the brakes worked well despite the 1st class stamp size pads I've yet to find anything that was so cheap and useful.

So this weekend I had a few hours to work on the car! I had planned on seeing if the engine would run, but naturally could I get hold of a battery? Could I heck! I don't think buying a new one would be prudent, as it would be simply sitting idle for a fair while. I my have to bite the bullet though, as I hope to have an evening this week to see if she'll run. If she does she will still get a full service and going over, may just save a few headaches so fingers crossed. Anyhow decided to try my hand at bodywork for the first time. I'm lucky with where I live, in that my neighbours are very friendly, and in fact most are very keen to chat about the car and see how it's going, it's become a bit of a focal point on the estate! Window sign has also caused the phrase "how's spearmint?" To become popular! However there is one neighbour, isn't there always, who complains about everything. Now he hasn't complained about the car, but I have been concerned, given the surface corrosion she would be am easy target. Also, I know people like patina, and I do as well, however there is patina and then there is too much patina imo. In short I decided that the bodywork was a bit too patinated for my liking so decided to sand back the rust, apply liberal amounts of kurust, some primer and some paint. I have never done any bodywork before (excuse 1) so decided to start with the bonnet. Bearing in mind that there is no power where the car is (excuse 2) I sanded back with a wire wheel in a drill, and good old fashioned sandpaper. I will freely admit, it aint great. I made a fair few mistakes. Not taking the bonnet off being one, and doing the job st the height of sunshine probably not a great idea. I also think I could have been better with my filling and sanding. Bit happier with the side panel as learning from the mistakes, and learnt I need patience! I hope as well that this should delay and rot from spreading.. Will be doing it again for sure, as the long term plan will be a full respray etc. but I think looks a bit better, and wkll suffice for now. will also be flattening back etc. Have some photos of my first bodywork attempts.. roof next!!

so, small update in that I am ordering and awaiting parts! Had intended to spend the bank holiday weekend tinkering but alas, not to be as not all the parts have arrived. Two developments; one battery on and she turns ok but no spark, suspect the coil.. not a problem as its for the bin as a precaution anyway. Second is that i was maybe hasty in determining the tank to be solid.. Put some fuel in from a can, and got some on my shoes... Small hole right at the top of the filler neck on the inside, tank holds ts drink otherwise. Seeing as the tank will need to come out to weld the inner arch, will wait and see what to do with it. few parts have been ordered from motor factors and FB 'breadvanclan' club: Dizzy cap (arrived) Spark plugs (arrived) Condeser (arrived) Points Leads Coil latter brake discs, calipers and hangers windscreen wiper motor boot strut lots more still needed! have some concerns that the gearbox is knackered... and Chris vs surface bodypanel rust ia still very much a match in progress, all fun!

Lack of spark is most likely due to dirty points. I've had to get countless old cars running that have been parked up for years, and every single one with points has needed them cleaning to get a spark. Bit a wet and dry folded over and put between the points to clean it up, hold them open with a screw driver and give them a bit of a blow to clear out any debris afterwards.
If you do try and start it just be mindful that the cam belt possibly might not be in the best of conditions after sitting for so long.

Good point (pun alert) will be sort it the points for sure. Yes once ive got her running (possiby before) the belts will be done straight away, would be daft not too after 21 years! :-P

Vac pipes are another good cause of issues. Is it running the delightful Pierburg carb?
I have a guide somewhere for what pipes go where, its a good way to eliminate causes of running issues.
Just done head gasket,water pump and cambelt on ours. Then the driveshaft oil seal decided to make like a rude analogy. Having lost patience with it, its now at our tame VW specialist.

shampooefficient it is indeed running the pierberg carb... i gather these are a bit of a pain? Yep spotted one split hose today. Had chance today to remove the dizzy and take it apart, bit grubby to be expected! Got to work out the best new rotor arm to get. See the problem with parts hunting, well two problems, firstly is as the car will be a scruffy example and I'm not rich it's al on a tight budget, and secondly no motor factors can seem to recognise the number plate. As insurers can't either (DVLA does) I'm guess that's due to how long she has been off the road, so it does leave room for error with the dif VW bits available. Still, expecting a big box of Polo bits to arrive at some point soon!

So a little bit of work has been done on the Polo, delayed by me having to play mix and match with the parts that have arrived to try and get the right combination thatr works/connects together! Anyhow, I have a box of goodies which arrived from a Facebook group containing brake calipers discs and pads as well as a window winder and a wiper motor. Calipers have been recently rebuilt I am told, but I think will investigate them nonetheless. Here's hoping nothing is missing! (The 2nd brake disc is just out of shot!) I have also managed to acquire a good set of leads, new plugs points condensor and dizzy cap. As well as a second hand coil (probably should have got a new one for peace of mind, but it was available). I need to find a new rotor arm though! Autodoc is a good shout, I have been using GSF for years but ave bcome a little more than a smidgen unimpressed of late. Although I am missing a new rotor arm, I thought I would still have a bit of a go at something so I took the dizzy off, gave it a clean up and reassembled with the new parts Then of course impatient me decided i would have to put it all on and see what happened. Now I was not expecting her to fire up after all this time, and she didnt. however with the new bits she had a good go! not bad given the old rotor arm,and I have noticed that a hose from the carb is pretty split, fuel lines will need doing I'm sure and the carb will need at least a thorough clean however this car clearly wants to live! also good news for the little Polo is that my new found fabricator friend came around and had a look, and reckons that its no more than a days work on good old mates rates, so bonus te welding shouldnt brake the bank! (I would put a fingers crossed emoji in if i knew how) MOT still a long way off, and something tells me tat this car must have a gremlin i'm missing, but hey ho fingers still crossed and optimism still high!

Little victories are always nice. Fitted a wiper motor, and it works too Separate note 1, I think these hoses might have had it! Separate note 2, I think I'm gonna go for it with the spoiler. My old one had one and I like the look. Will just need to measure the holes correctly and make a darn good template, as I gather resting it on the rear wiper probably isn't a permanent solution. Also of concern is that my mum has a couple of cans of ford cream spray paint, and aparently a matt black car with cream plastics would be interesting... hmm! My intention is still that she's going to be pretty much standard, however I am starting to think on wheels! Bit of a way off that though. Anyway. Off to play guess the correct rotor arm tomorrow!

Progress is the definition of slow due to lack of tools/money/time/getting married/space but she is still here!
I have a video of her attempting to start if somebody could upload it for me or tell me how that would be great! She won't be at the gathering this year that's for sure though.
A problem I'm encountering is that VW changed the engine on the polo, I believe around A-reg and of course not much from the latter engine transfers and the latter car is the one of which most survive. Ah fun and games!
I think I might fit the spoiler on the back so at least something is done!
