Hi, i recently purchased a new toy! 1989 Toyota Hilux, its solid and mostly complete- although i havent had it running yet. I'm going to post some pics up of how it is at present. The truck has a good set of wheels on and has got a USA spec roll bar, and nudge bar with spotlamps.
I'm just trying to gather some parts/ advice and inspiration before i get it into my workshop. Please feel free to add pics or opinions etc...
My first choice is on colour- not sure if i should stick with the original- hilux red or go for something a little different.....

I will follow with great interest since I love japanese trucks from the 80s and 90s.
I wouldn't keep it red but that's because I don't like non-metallic reds, so that's just my personal taste.

still cant make my mind up on the colour....
but I'm thinking along the lines of; keeping the USA spec roll and nudge bars with the spotlamps, keeping the tailgate-net, put a great big winch on the front, maybe some rock-sliders/ side step running-bars.... perhaps some big wide arch extensions...
the colours i have been thinking of are; the typical/ original red with all black trim, and maybe a set of original toyota decales/ graphics dow the side. or more of a mean look, dark grey truck- perhaps a gun metal grey metalic.
still not quite sure....

Always wanted to build a pre runner and do love a hilux
Although I'm usually a fan of the more boring monochromatic colours, I think you can't go wrong with keeping a red hilux with gloss black on all the tubed steel

I must admit, the factory 90's look for the hilux is one of my favourites. With the light grey/minty graphics, with chunky tires is perfect to me.

Pretty much this look, maybe different colour wheels. But I would have one like that in a heartbeat.

Bookmarked! Don’t see many of these around now unfortunately, not even for off-road use Will this be used on the road only? Or will it get to see the dirty stuff too? Looks like it already has a lift kit

Looks like it already has a lift kit yes, realy not many of these around, the early ones fair enough, but even the mk3 shape seem to have dissapeared now- i reckon most have gone for export- i jumped on this one as soon as it came up on ebay a few weeks back. I'm hoping to get the truck done this summer- then i can potentialy have the winter to have some fun in it- at the end of the day- you cant have a 4x4 and then avoid the mud !! yep, already got some decent tyres and a lift.

right thats it then; I'm spraying it red, adding some black wide arches, black roll bar and nudge bars. winch on the front, maybe a light bar on the back for a worklight. keeping the usa spec net, original but clean interior. raptor seal the bed and full underside for durability, few tweeks here and there. I'm going to keep it a typical hilux look, but a proper rough and tough 4x4 workhorse. thanks for helping me make my mind up!! just got to get a couple of cars finished and out the workshop, then i will be rolling this one in!!

That could explain it, they seem a very popular export car along with landcruisers Excellent, it's definitely worth getting it done for winter, i'm always praying for snow Look forward to seeing more updates on it

had also one of these, bought with a front accident. i put on a 2wd-hilux-front end combined with a VW Taro grille.
perfect confusion.
sold it to a VW-freak nearby, unfortunately i have no pictures.

right, i dragged this into the workshop a couple of weeks ago and have spent a few evenings on it now, so the truck is slowly progressing, and i have a fairly clear idea in mind of how i want the truck to look now!
first of all i have stripped it right down and carried out a little bit of welding what was needed- very little indeed! I'm so suprised at how solid this thing is!
i have had the truck running now and it sounds great! just needs a throttle linkage rod to make it derivable.
next i have stripped and wire brushed the underside and black raptor sealed it for protection, then sprayed on some waxoil for good luck!
i have decided to go bold and make this into a proper beast of a workhorse truck! i do love a nice full on restoration, but I'm planning on using this truck through winters, and pulling trailers with it. i realy want something thats super piratical and i don't want to start getting precious about throwing tools and curse word in the back!
therefore i decided to spray the entire bed, inside and out in raptor seal load-liner; the inside of the tub i have stripped and sprayed with black raptor - this stuff is real good quality and so nice to use too, totally rate it! just pour in the hardner, give it a shake and then screw it into a under-sealing gun, plug into the airline, turn the pressure up and blast away! it has a good grippy texture and is very durable stuff.
the outside of the bed i wanted red, the typical "HILUX" red, so i used the upol raptor seal again, but this time the tintable version, so you just add 10% of your 2k colour to the bottle, once you have mixed with hardner, and shake and spray. i also used this for the sills of the cab too.
I'm now working on the cab, sanding and prepping ready to prime and spray. the cab itself will just be stranded 2k red to a good finish, as i don't want/need the textured surface here.
to make it stand out I'm keeping the US spec tail-net instead of a proper tailgate, and the US spec roll ans nudge bars. i am planning on adding side steps/ rock sliders too, and have just purchased a nice chunky rear bumper/ towbar. i think i will spray these additions in the black raptor, for durability and practicality.
I'm on the hunt now for spot-lamps and winches; my plan is to have a winch fitted up front with synthetic rope, and a pair of spots too. the 4 lamps on the roll bar will stay, but I'm looking to also fit a 4' led light bar facing the back of the truck, to enable me to see what I'm doing when I'm loading and unloading in the dark. I'm then looking to fit another heavy duty winch to the back of the truck, above the towbar, this one will prob be a steel cable winch.
i am half tempted to get some graphics made up to match the tradition "HILUX" stripes on the side, but will decide on that once its all back together and almost finished.
i do have a set of wind deflectors to fit around the tops of the doors, and a set of chuncky mirrors too. i am looking to get a set of chunky arch extensions to screw on too, these i will probably spray with the black raptor seal.
any advice, thoughts and recommendations are welcome, i don't have many pics yet, but will be uploading loads as i get on with the project. i am aiming to wrap this one up pretty sharp as i want to get it on the road for this winter.
thanks for looking, matt.
