Cheers again for the input all. I’ve ordered some Combicolour and will hit up the local DIY place for rollers, assuming 2”-4” will suffice?
Think I’ll go proper lazyman with it and not use thinners, just to see how it comes out. Will report back as soon as paint arrives and the weather clears up!

think alot of people expect to get near pro results with little prep and a couple of hours rollering , the folks that get it nice have put as much effort into the prep as a good spray job

But if I can get somewhere around the quality of Quatermass' van, then I'd be happy. The DA sander might even make an appearance! In for the ride - I like a good experiment. Welcome along, it's very much an experiment. Always fancied giving it a bash.

I roller painted my little Polo back in 2008, after my friend had done his Jetta with good results. We both wanted matt finish, and we both did them outdoors, a panel at a time. Prep-wise all I did was a quick once over with some 120 grit wet and dry with a bucket of fairy liquid water, and gave each panel 2 coats, with a light sand in between. The paint was really good military grade stuff, from a specialist in Hull if I recall. The colour chart was awesome, as it only had military spec colours. The light blue I chose was for the French Air Force or something!

That's roughly the sort of finish I'd like but with a bit more shine. I've gone for Combicolour straight up black, so should hopefully have a bit of gloss to it.

Luckily i'd only done a bonnet and a wing, but it seemed like the stuff never fully cured. I had to peel off what i could and then sand pack the rest to original paint and then just went with having it sprayed instead. Not sure if i layed it on too thick in the first place or what but it hadn't seem to dryed properly after months.

Has anyone tried the Pearl effect stuff or always just the flat gloss?

unthinned rustloeum takes forever to dry , thats why folk are thinning it and doing many coats over weeks with sanding inbetween
I'm a car painter , i don't mind giving you advice but its usually ignored over someone that suggests something that sounds easier

I didn't consider that it would take much longer to dry un-thinned.
This might be a stupid question but, is white spirit the same as thinners? Would it work with Rustoleum, which is (I think) enamel based?

Here's a quick "before" picture. The factory paint was red and was completely gone. It has been prepped and primed and then the current top coat is U-POL satin black. Apparently this is "bodyshop quality" paint. I dunno about that but it went on nicely. If I don't put up an "after" picture, you know it's gone horribly wrong...

Pretty sure the rustoleum data sheet says mineral spirit is recommended as a thinning agent.

Pretty sure the rustoleum data sheet says mineral spirit is recommended as a thinning agent. A quick Google tells me white spirit and mineral spirit are the same thing just named differently in the US and the UK, so that's a bonus!
