I've been rattle-canning my truck and it's coming out pretty much as expected. I wouldn't mind a shiny finish which I really struggle to get with rattles and being outside (which is no surprise).
I've seen mixed reviews of roller paint but also seen some pretty good finishes, especially with Rustoleum.
Has anyone on here rollered their car and had it come out not looking like a chalk board?
I'm unsure if I'll actually give it a try but it has been on my mind for a while.
Would love to see some examples and hear any do's/do-not's.

Not done it gloss myself (Always matt black!) but I have seen some great results using Rustoleum. I was told to put it on in thin coats up to 5 times then leave it a fortnight to harden before wet sanding with 1200 wet n dry & a final mop with cutting compound? I couldn't tell thats for sure.

I looked into this when I had a scimitar but never actually got around to doing it.
There is a technique called tipping that looks to have good results if done properly.
Don't know what it looks like up close in real life but looks better than a roller finish on it's own i'd say. Let us know how you get on.

I'm also interested in the prospect of roller painting car/panels and it seems to be quite viable with solid paints as in the above videos etc but does anyone know if it is possible using some form of metallic paint, and if so any particular types of, to a similarly acceptable standard?

I'd be more inclined to use a brush. Never had much success rollering anything.

I did my old land rover with a roller and teamac metalcote paint, I found I needed to do it on a cold day or thin it to stop it going off too quickly and flowing out but it worked pretty well, same as spraying though 90% of the finish is in the preparation.
Many years ago we did a mates herald with a commercial vehicle enamel, that came out really well

Cheers for the responses all, I'm still unsure as to whether I'll give it a bash but thinking it can't be any worse than rattle cans surely? I'll have to check out that video posted by vitessetony too.

Rollered a whole van with gloss grey rustoleum once. Didn't do any prep or finishing. I just washed the van, masked it off and got rollering. I was really impressed with the result. Anywhere where it was on a flat smooth surface it looked damn fine and shiny. Trouble was most of the van was impact-crumpled or peppered with surface rust so there was no point in doing it any better.
I reckon you could get it really good with some care.

I painted my Defender with a roller and did the roof on my 924. I used enamel paint which is available as Military or agricultural paint from Ebay. I got a great finish on both and they were done outside in warmish weather, they were rubbed down with scotchbrite pads and panel wiped before painting. The secret is to get really good quality dense foam mini rollers. Some thin it but I just put it on as it came and it only needed flatting back a bit on my 924, on the Defender it smoothed out and looked really good.

This is interesting, because the truck is mainly flat panels but mostly because I am a lazy, lazy git. I've always wanted to try it but never had the balls to potentially wreck the truck more than it already is.

I've always wanted to try it but never had the balls to potentially wreck the truck more than it already is. Here's a couple of pics of it off the internet. It started off as ivory white when I bought it. BUT... the ivory white paint was standard house emulsion that somebody had put on there using a very coarse brush. I did do some very quick hand sanding of the worst furrows on the surface but none of it was flat, or straight, or unblemished. It looked a million times better once painted, and it took an afternoon.

Awesome! The van actually looks great and about the level of “good” I’d like the truck.
Thanks for the link! I’ll be sure to check that out 👍🏻

That’s some good advice there man, I was sure there was something about the rollers but I couldn’t remember what it was.

Does the thinning help with the humidity? I've never rollered a car before but I'm planning on doing my van this year, 1 as it's a transit and needs touching in and a few rust scabs repairing and 2 I fancy giving it a go.

A very long time ago a rolled my Visa. It came up great. I did cut it back and gave it a good polish. I painted my Visa black with paint that I found in the shed.

I rollered my mini back in 2009 and it’s stilllooking good now. If you have a look on the rolled-on forum, some people have got amazing results

Hmmmm. This is making me want to roller my Scimitar. I wonder how it would go down on fibreglass... especially fibreglass with an unknown type of satin black paint already on it.
It could do with a new lick though. I might have to check out that website and see if there any fibreglass examples.

There are plenty of campervan pop tops that have been rollered fine.
