I’m on with (one of) my many projects s custom Lambretta. I’ve decided to paint it a gloss black and I’m trying to get it something like period perfect but not a stock colour. You see the build is a custom with the time scale from about 1983-86 when custom scooters were still largely done at home on a budget. What I’m looking for is THE best factory car black paints of the time metallics, pearls (if they were about) etc All I can think of is the XR3/4i blacks of the time

Pearlescent's didn't really appear commonplace until the emergence of the water based paints for the automotive market in the late 90's early 00's - up until then it was down to specialist finishes such has metalflake, candies & pearls but this was all aftermarket refinishing rather than OEM manufacture - some black metallic's were about but were quite scarce - the 80's & 90's were really about solid stark & bold Black & White when it came to vehicle colours although solid Reds featured quite prominently too

Mercedes had Black Pearl Metallic starting in 1985, but it isn't really a dark black, more of a very dark grey.

I would just use a pure black mixbase. Can't get more black than that.

How about Vauxhall Onyx Black, or if you want a metallic, the Mazda 323gt c.1984 could provide a suitable shade. Apparently the BMW black from that era was the 'blackest' black.
Altogether now Blackest Black, I want my baby back..................

The black will be broken up with some Metalflake silver based panel paint with fogging maybe a little rag rolling then some heavy blue candy over that.

Metallic/pearlescent blacks never look as good as solid black.
If you want a proper black black it has to be solid high gloss black.

I agree on that part, most metallic blacks only seems dusty IMO.

Metallic/pearlescent blacks never look as good as solid black. If you want a proper black black it has to be solid high gloss black. And one that is based on blue, rather than brown. If you want an eighties colour, then Talbot Embassy Black is good.

I agree on that part, most metallic blacks only seems dusty IMO. Two guy's at work, one had a mk4 golf in solid black and one had a mk2 Octavia vrs in the metallic black. No matter how much effort the guy with Octavia put in to detailing it, it would always look rubbish next to the mk4 that had just been to local hand wash. He was always so mardy about it (we may have wound him up several times lol)

If I had the money, I would paint a car in vantablack ... digg.com/video/vantablack-buildingThen I found out that it will lose all it's corners and perspective, so would get bumped into a fair bit as nobody would be able to judge distances, and I would lose the car at night. Maybe not

That Sierra has made me have a little crisis. Love shiny black.
For more helpful, less disturbing... how about the blue-black as used on the 190E Cosworth? Later than you were after, perhaps, but a lovely colour.
Or, if I may be so rude to suggest a modern colour, Alfa did the MiTo in a beautiful metallic black...

The blue-black would work as the theme of the bike is Hellraiser (yes I know it was released in 87’) where the lighting is very dark in the movie but also blue. But feel blue-black then dark candy blue panels would be too blue if you get me.

Unfortunately I don´t know the color code of this, but when I saw it in the OOOF-Thread, I had to think of you: That´s really one dark black!
