There are always bad smells in my garage Insipred by BlackPop, I think an extractor fan might be a good idea. I've got a spot for one at knee level. But if I go for a 16" plate fan , I've got to get a big hole through the internal breeze block, which has an outer red brick skin. Everything I can find about drilling holes, suggests core drills, but I'm not going to be able to get one that big. I've got an SDS drill which I've hardly used, am I just going to have to chain drill a hole, or is there an easier way ? Thanks

I made mine square to suit the square louvre grilles that are fitted to them - I have a 400mm x 400mm intake and the same size for extraction with a 400 mm diameter extractor fitted on the internal wall which is identical to what Mark (Blackpop) has - I doubt that you will need anything bigger than this - I have a single hit & miss filter on the intake with the same again in front of the extractor but then with a bank of paint filters prior to the extractor - if you do the hole square it makes it easy to insert a timber frame box that closes the wall cavity off (if you have one) - mine is just made up from ply

Brilliant - cutting a square hole - why did I not think of that.
That might give me the excuse to buy a 9" grinder :-)

So a bit of retail therapy, and these arrived on my doorstep - Big fan
- Gravity grille thingy
- Some generic dust filters
A little bit of Cardboard Aided Design, and I've got a position on the wall for a hexagonal hole ready to cut out. I don't have much flexibility on placing. I can't go any lower, as there is a shed on the other side of the wall, and I need the airflow to go over the roof of the shed. I think the plan for my limited selection of builders tools, is to drill though at each corner. Then use the 115mm grinder to cut from the inside, and then repeat on the outside. I don't think that will give me a deep enough cut, but maybe I'll chain drill after that. Believe it or not I'm trying to avoid buying tools for this one job - no I can't believe it either Wish me luck

Just cover everything up - brick dust from an angle grinder gets everywhere - and I mean everywhere

Well that wasn't so bad. Drilling the corners and cutting from both sides worked out well. But chain drilling the remainder was a PITA. So I gave up with that, and used the chisel on the SDS drill. I've not used that function before - worked well A test fit - yep okay I rough'n'ready frame to hold the filters, just loosely in position Hopefully I can find an hour or two soon to bolt it all down, and fit and seal the grille on the outside. Thanks for looking

All done The back wall of my garage reasonably subtle, but I do need to clear up some of the scrap. Reworked the electrics to get some extra plugs and a fused 3A spur for the fan. I know nothing about filtration, so I didn't want to spend a bunch of time on the filter fittings, as I may go to a different type/size. The blue filter is already turning the colour of brick dust, as I've been using the blow gun and extractor fan together to "hoover up" seems to work well enough.
