Well what can I say that’s mega thanks so much and you got it done so quick. I think I’m going have to get you to do them a60 models ive got when you have time. The the problem I see I think I’m going to have a get a life size one which means something will have to go? Theres an easy answer here. Give me the red one, and I will build you your kit one to remember it by. Everyones a winner! I'll even do a replica of your new Willys coupe as part of the deal. And a Blasphemi, and Bob Falfers 55 Chevy from American Graffiti , then John Milners 32, then the California Kid, then.....

bmcnutThis may have been asked of you before, but what specific dremel tool are you using? Seems to be a plethora of them out there and the last one I bought years ago was a disaster and a waste of time. I'd appreciate a point in the right direction from someone who is successfully using one to do the same as I want to

I Use a dremel 4000, just like this one except its covered in paint and stuff. My old one was a 3 speed, this ones almost infinately adjustable. Aside from that my old one was better, more tourqey. I borrowed a cheap one when my old one packed up, it was rubbish, if you are going to buy a dremel, make sure its a Dremel. This goes for the bits as well, grinding bits last longer, cutting discs last longer and don't tend to shatter. If I had the choice again id buy an old second hand one with adjustable speed, Dremels are still good, but don't seem to be quite as good as they used to be. My old one looked more like this. It got used and abused for years until the insides fell apart. If you can find a clean older one on ebay I'm sure that would be your better bet.

I was going to do another coat of lacquer on the mooneyes lot but patchy rain made me change my mind. Even though id do it in a garage ive still had it go cloudy and i don't want that. So i had a go at putting some primer on the Ford van. Over the last week or so ive been aralditing and milliputing it back together. The first thing to do was sort the rear arches out. There was a gap between the arches (chassis) and the arch id made in the body. I made it oversize so i could sit the body where i wanted it, then fill the gap. It was like this, but worse. To do this I layed some cling film on the arches, put the body on, taped it together and poked some milliput in the gap. Waited 24hrs, removed the clingfilm and sanded off the excess milliput. Then I re-attached the roof with araldite making sure it was nice and straight and flat. Once that had set I carefully ground off the excess and finnished it with milliput. Once all that was done I decided to cut the top of the roof off to lower it a little more. Had to be very careful with vibration making sure nothing shook itself apart. Should have done it before hand really, but all is good. Then added an earlier roof panel off one of the vans i got last weekend, early ones are curved and textured, later ones are flat and shiney. I didnt know this until I noticed earler today. Minor bits need filling, but I cant see the join. The roof chop is very subtle, only 3mm or so, but it helps improve its lines rather than it being a megachop.

Almost finnished After I laquered it a second time there are still areas that have come out matt, but I'm not going to do do it again. I seem to have lost the ability of spraying lacquer. I'll carefully use some 2000 wet and dry and polish it to try and improve it. I just want to get the thing finnished, its taken too long!

Cheers, it does look good, the cab is fine, the van is good but the sides are a bit dull, the pick up is fine but the coupe is matt all over. I did them on a perfect day, i think i just need to apply the coats a bit heavier to avoid it going matt. Yeah i use rattle can clear coat, probably not the best way. I tried using an airbrush years ago and just couldnt get on with it.

I just wondered how you put the bodies back together with the chassis once you've painted them? Do you just glue them, or do you use tiny screws? If you use tiny screws, what size are they, where do you get them from, and what size drill bit will I need?

Also, while I'm thinking about it, where do you find the 1/64 scale decals?

I've had issues with lacquer on small scale, even on a really good day. The only way I found to avoid the matt texture was to get them somewhere warm while drying, on a board sat on a radiator was good, if a bit smelly. If you leave them to dry on the windowsill it can really make a mess of the gloss finish for some reason, I guess there's a good amount of temperature difference near the glass or something.
Progress is nice on the Mooneyes lot anyway, looks a really good set up, and the chopped van is coming on well too, proportions look good on it.

When I put them back together I use araldite, I don't use screws because I'm not likely to take them apart again and if they are cut and shuts there isnt usualy posts and holes lining up to use. I get the decals from mycustomhotwheels in Australia. The quality is fantastic, and authough i could get some in the uk the mooneyes ones and other brands arnt available.

Cheers all, it took far longer than id planned, but I'm happy with it. I had planned my next one to be a Pid-inspired build, but thanks to a charity shop visit last week I picked up one of these things If it hadn't given me an idea, I wouldn't have bought it. Ive had one of these for a while, waiting to find an excuse to do something with it. Turned out it was the only thing I had that would fit, so I now have this. It has reasonable potential, but the car on the back might change, its the only merc ive got. The thing is, do I carry on with it, or do I stash it and start a me-inspired-by-Pid-inspired-by-dad build?
