After a suggestion that I should start my own thread covering my customs, and cover a bit more about how I do them, I decided to do just that. I tend to do them on impulse, and if they start going wrong or don't go as planned they get chucked, not out of temper or owt, just because if I have a plan and i feel like in trying to fight it, id rather start again. At the moment I'm doing Hotwheels/Matchbox/Corgi mashups, but ive done Scalextric ones as well. I don't tend to collect like I used to, i prefer spending time creating them and getting an idea in my head into something 3D. Its also helped with giving up smoking, none of that vaping rubbish, I just stopped, and these help me not think about it. The current one was started because I had an old Matchbox Kenworth car transporter, and it bugged me that the lorry cab was a long way out of scale. So, take one Hotwheels Dairy Delivery And chop a chunk out of it and shorten it. To do this I simply stuck a band of masking tape the right width around the body to ensure the cut lines were parallel, and cut it with a dremel cutting disc. I tidied up the cut edges on a large file until both faces sat straight. Then I taped both ends together until they were stable and slapped some Araldite on the back. The only thing that needed matching up was the roofline. With the bodylines being dead straight everything else lined up. The join was filled with Milliput and the details in the lower rear panel were filled as it was easier than trying to make them look anything decent. Next, take a Matchbox Kenworth Lorry like this, but red. And cut it in half. The axles Ive chosen are slightly too wide, so I added the white plasticard to space it out, using Evostick to stick it on with. Then, take a Matchbox car transporter Try as I might to get a rough one, I ended up with a very good one but destroyed it anyway. There wasnt much I could do to the trailer to modify it, but I cut the tiny front wheels off the casting and stuck a strip of plasticard on the top deck, and blended it in with Milliput. I had to do this twice because the first time I did it I realised that it interfered with the bottom deck when it folded down, so I shortened it an redid it. It was then blended with the rest of it using milliput. Managed to do a bit of paintering today. Thats as far as I can get until I get another pair of correct wheels for the front, then I can set the height of the cab and glue it together.

Ah dude this is awesome, the cab/truck looks ace. What wheels are you planning for the front? Steelies? I will be wheel swapping a custom 62 chevy truck, i think the steelies on there are bigger than the ones i sent you. Will compare and let you know.
Keep us updated on your progress and congratulations on giving up smoking!

Smallest set at the far right are from a 240z, so they are bigger and staggered too.

Cheers all, I find this sort of thing quite easy to do as long as I take my time, over the years ive learnt this and that doing all sorts of stuff, and that helps me out doing this, but its easy to forget that not everyone knows, so if this helps anyone out it'll be worth doing. Having been around cars for so long and building afew myself, I still get the urge to want to see what something would look like if I did so-and-so to it, but I'm not in a position to do so now, so this is the next best thing, and cheap.
The centre ones look like the ones I need for the front, its difficult to tell without direct comparison. I'm pretty sure I'll find what I need at Sandown but i'll bear those in mind.

Got a bit done here and there over the past few days. I decided to cut the rams off the back as they looked a bit naff, and that meant the bottom of it still remained in the side of the trailer. The easiest way to remove it was to fill the panel I'm not very good at remembering to take pictures as I do things, I just get on and do it. After id filled the rear panel I decided to fill the main panel to make it match, it also makes the rear upright stand out more. I keyed up the surface with the dremel and a engraving bit, and filled it with milliput. After the initial rubdown with a coarse emery board, milliput was then used with alot of water, and brushed on thinly so it could then be rubbed down with a fine emery board. In the past it has been acceptable for me to use emery boards because they were a dark sandy colour. They are now pink. The beauty of Milliput is it can be used with as much water as you like, it will still set. It can even be used underwater. Today I went to sandown collectors fair and got amongst other things, 2 cars that have the wheels I need The datsun will supply its rear axle for the trailer, and the vw will supply an axle for the front of the cab. I had wanted to get an Embosser for its axles as I knew they would fit, but the vw gave me i axle in the size I was looking for, and the rears are slightly bigger, which gives me a choice. Here is the cab with the smaller wheels on the front, which are the same size as the wheels on the back of the cab. And with the cab lifted slightly and the larger wheels fitted. Cant make up my mind, id intended to use the smaller ones, but I'm starting to think the larger ones look better. Any thoughts? All the wheels will be highlighted with a chrome rim when its finnished, they're all odd at the moment

I'll be using halfords finest, I havnt decided on colour yet, tbh i havnt got a clue. Shame you missed it, it was big as usual, claimed to be the largest in europe! I bought afew, nothing that special, but I almost bought a Blown delivery, like this. Well over my usual self enforced £10-max-per-car rule, but it was awesome. I had a looooong think about it and decided I wasnt going to blow my entire budget on 1 car only 5 minuits after walking through the door, so I left it. It wasnt long before I decided to go back and get it, but it had gone. Fiddlesticks.

I decided to go with the same size wheels on the front. To get the arches to clear the bigger wheels meant having them inset quite some way, or having the cab sit a little too high. Its not like I'm going push it around the table making broom-broom noises, I just like to make sure they roll like they should, and sit as well as they can. The original idea was to have the same size wheels front and rear anyway. I got it mocked up at the correct height with a couple of coins, and scored across the back of the cab once the height was set Once marked I took it outside and went at it with the dremmel and roughed up the 2 surfaces to be stuck together, and drilled a small hole in the back of the cab to reinforce the join and give somewhere for the excess Araldite to go. Annoying when your camera randomly focusses on something else other than the thing you're trying to take a picture of. Mixed up some standard araldite, not that rapid stuff, and wiped it on both surfaces and carefully pushed them together ensuring they were straight and square, and wedged them between 2 sockets so they don't move And wait.

I left the Araldite to harden for 3 days. It goes hard within a day, but can still be soft enough to move slightly if any weight is on it for any length of time. I then brushed some Milliputs around it to hide the join. Forgot to take a pic, then sanded it and cleaned it using washing up liquid to get rid of any grease, and got it ready for paint I use cling film wrapped around it to avoid having a hard line left when using masking tape. I didnt want to get a load of paint on the cab again, I use as little paint as possible in thin coats as I don't want to loose the details. The same goes for when using filler, which is why Milliput is so damn good. Once is was primed I noticed that the backend is ever so slightly wonky, but its the casting that seems to be bent, its nice and straight otherwise. Doesnt matter though as it wont be noticed when it back in one piece, and the way it was set with the coins means it will sit level. After using filler its always good to dust it with primer to pick out any faults. The trailer was given a coat at the same time. The 'chocks' that stop a car from rolling off were quite high so i filed those down to get a lower car on it, and the fillered sides needed a coat. Final colour still not decided on. Mooneyes might be a possibility but ill need decals, a coat of white primer, and different glass for that as i only have red, or i'll do it a colour, or 2 tone to suit the red windows, and do i do 3 cars to match or not? Happy so far though.

Thanks, Real rider wheels is a great idea but has afew problems. 1)I have many many steel wheels now, probably enough to make 3 cars match as well 2) I would need to buy and destroy a number of real riders cars to get the wheels i need, once I can work out which cars have the right size wheels 3) The wheels that are on there look ok and work well with the idea that I have in my head, and I always try to go with that, also I like to consider this a cheap hobby, and all of a sudden I can see notes going here and there lol Ive still got paint and decals to get. Once ive got the chassis sorted I'll start looking at cars to add to it, and that will help me decide on what livery to do it in, mooneyes is looking likely atm.

A quick one today, I had a Hooligan, which looked like this, but knackered. I took it to bits, painted it, and removed the arches. I didnt put it back together as I had plans to try and lower it but my dremel packed up. I found it today so got the new dremel out and ground away at the body and chassis to get the body to sit a bit lower. Thats the first one sorted for the transporter. Just need to repaint it.

I sorted out another car for it, started out looking something like this Loose the arches, a bit of cutting and grinding to the chassis and body, new wheels, and I have.. still some fine tuning to do, but looking good so far. Still to decide on number 3, will be an old ford of some sort. Because the van body sits a bit higher than usual it needed a front bumper. I searched through my spares box trying different bumpers on it until I found one of these I thought the rear bumper might do the job, if it was turned upside down. Really wasnt expecting the overriders to line up with the bonnet line so well. Its a bit deep, so i'll try grinding the numberplate off and filing a bit off the top. Ive been looking at yellow paint for it and its a bit of a mindfied. Looking at white and yellow cars it seems to be a combination that can make or break a car. Mooneyes cars tend to be quite bright, but I don't want to it too bright. Ford Daytona looks the best choice so far but i'll wait until the decals turn up.

The third one for the transporter was going to be a van, might still be if i change my mind, but for now ive settled on a Track T. The white one was all diecast parts, the bronze one was part plastic. Nothing wrong with either of them, i decided to go with the white one. I stripped it, cleaned up the body lines, changed the wheels and filed off the humps in the bonnet. I might add something to it if i can find something. I lowered the front of the coupe a bit more by trimming down the engine block, without the block in there the bonnet lands on the chassis. Then i fitted some different wheels. They wont be staying but they do make it look rather cool. So at the moment i have these 3. Good enough or should i change any? I also found another possible front bumper. Slightly wider, doesnt follow the lines quite so well but looks better somehow. Hmmmmmm....

Mooneyes is the plan, and i was going to order some, but there seems to be a problem atm so I may go with something else. Thanks for the suprise parcel, it arrived this morning, wasnt expecting the extras, thanks! The black pinstriped van will not be painted, too cool as it is.

I was going to give the cars a coat of primer this afternoon, but the weather was dismal, so I matched the wheels up with a bit of chrome on the rims. Easier to do with a thicker pen suprisingly, but after doing 22 wheels I don't plan on doing any more any time soon. Some could do with another coat but that can wait.
