Hi all! Wanted to get a new daily which fulfilled the following: Seat 5 Comfortable Fun to drive Not too uneconomical Ideally something retro I went through so many options but never considered an S Class, didn't think it would be fun to drive or economical. Just so happened that my friend had one and he picked me up when we went out for dinner when he was in town. Wow it was so cool! All the mod cons yet still retro and pretty cool looking. I told him that if he wanted to sell it I want it! He just laughed it off but then he called me a couple weeks later. Turns out he wanted to upgrade to an S500 so the 320 was up for grabs. So I went to see it, drove it, fell in love and bought it! I'm coming from an Audi A4 1.8T Quattro which is slightly better on fuel so I'm not so worried economy wise. It is genuinely quite fun to drive and surprisingly nimble. Got a few plans but nothing too drastic as it is going to be a daily driver.

Very Jealous! I had the 5.0 V8 Coupe version and sold it to fund a house move - my biggest regret in life, I kid you not!
Is yours not fitted with Parking Sensors? Do the soft close doors still work? IF not, usually a pipe trapped under a seat.

IF not, usually a pipe trapped under a seat. You could always buy another! No soft close doors or parking sensors sadly. Not bothered about soft close but really wish it had parktronic. To be fair as a daily I guess it's one or two more systems not to worry about! đŸ˜‚ It runs really well but there's a bit of vibration at 50mph until you drive through it at about 55. Hoping it's something cheap like wheel balancing! Fingers crossed! One thing I need to be careful of is that it's really easy to speed without realising because its so quiet inside. It's quite a weird sensation but I do enjoy the oasis feel away from the traffic! Lol I needed to buy a head unit for it so I bought the Continental Dab, Bluetooth, USB one. I think it's going to fit right in and look as factory fitted as an after market unit could look.

You just can't explain to everyone about the sheer silence of a W140. It's like you are in another world. Sure, there are quiet cars but nothing quite like a 140.

One of the last well built Mercedes I worked for Mercedes around the time they swopped over from the 140 to the 220 and the difference in build quality was shocking same as the 210 etc all the new cars made mid to late 90s on were definitely made on a cost saving budget I've came close to buying a S600 a couple of times but I'm more an old BMW guy so I always tend to buy the BMW equivalent so it's been e32/e38 750il

That is simply lovely. I've had a couple of W124s but always coveted the W140. There's just something about that vast expanse of Benzness! Looks great in silver too.
Mind if I ask where you got the head unit from? Would look good in my mk2 Golf.

The continental ones are orange back-lit and the VDO ones are blue. Choose the brand based on what suits your interior better. The merc has orange back-lit ac controls so it made more sense. If you search for Continental TRD7412UB-OR then it comes up as VDO webshop. Comes from Netherlands, mine will hopefully come this weekend. I bought a cheap set of OZ Opera 2's in 18x8. They need a full refurb but they look very similar to AMG Monoblocks so still a fairly oem but a bit different. Need to get them split, powder coated and then get them on to replace the smaller ones it came with. Not quite sure on colours yet, might do the centre in a light gunmetal as opposed to the standard silver. Couple of pics to show what they could look like. Would probably powder coat the lips silver though instead of polishing them.

Thanks for that dude, I've had a look and they are very appealing from a purely aesthetic point of view, just right for a retro car. Only problem is my dash is backlit green!
Love the O.Z.s by the way, they will suit it perfectly.

Love the O.Z.s by the way, they will suit it perfectly. I've got a Becker Indianapolis which I borrowed from the original owner and it is green. Really good unit with great sound quality. One thing I noticed is that the volume in the car alters based on the speed of the car! Amazing. Heres a pic, you can find them on ebay I think. I'll try get a pic of it in my car tomorrow morning.

Finally got the continental unit in. It looks great and sounds good. The functionality actually makes this by far the most modern car I've ever owned! Step in and my phone automatically connects to play music and calls come up on the unit. Waze plays through too, I think that's Bluetooth only but could try dab and see if it comes through. Doubt it though. Either way I'm really pleased and highly recommend to others who want that retro look with all the modern functionality.

Additionally really struggling with the OZ Operas. Someone has sheared the bolt heads and they're corroded pretty solidly in place. I think we are going to have to drill some of them out. Does anyone know someone in the Midlands who might be able to do this?

My mate Pav at Pure Customs in Coventry managed to drill out the bolts so onwards and upwards with these rims! I think I'm going to go with silver faces and polished lips so that it looks a bit oem. Excited to see how they turn out.

Well sadly the OZ's didn't work out. Barrels were gone. So decided to get Mercedes 22 spokes in 19s. Staggered set of 8.5 and 9.5. Had a trial fit today but need to figure out tyre size and a mild drop to get it looking right. They do look good though. Current tyres are 245/45/19 and 275/40/19, might need to drop a little and then lower by 35mm or so or maybe even more!

So went to Pure Customs in Coventry and chopped 1.5 coils off the back and 2 coils off the front. Put 235/40 /19 and 255/40/19 tyres on and voila! Sits just how I wanted although I might space out the tyres a bit.
