Grumpynorthener to Happynorthener? Great news on getting this sorted, are you going to change your name... Semi-related, I'm relocating from North East (maybe to South West) an understand why folk might change from Grumpy to Happier That sort of thing isnt a problem round my way. Its more like a competition. One turns it up, they all turn it up. Please clarify - do you have a surplus of subwoofer-equipped retros, or an over-abundance of maids ? (both sound interesting, but enquiring minds would like to know ) I was referring to music based noise, especially on a sunny days. There ends up being quite a clash of sounds from '80's pop to brostep, each year it seems that someone upgrades something and it all gets louder. I have no maids but they are cordially invited. don't bring drills or compressors. They are frowned upon. Authough sometimes you cant tell the difference between that and brostep.

Sorry to hear all the issues you've had. I've greatly enjoyed reading all your threads and glad to hear that it is all now resolved.
We had issues with our neighbours complaining to council over us running a business. Then over cars being on the front garden - clearing the drive to redo it. Then finally after the council wouldn't listen to them sending a very scary looking legal letter telling us we had 30 days to cease and desist as we had a commercial vehicle on our drive etc.... Luckily a friends mum used to be a solicitor and helped us write a reply and reassured us that we had nothing to worry about.
Same neighbour would complain about us parking on the road in front of their house but would quite happily take down the connecting fence, cut the end of our fence when they redid theirs etc..... without saying a word to us. Funnily enough they are a retired couple.
Also a fun karma story. My sister lives in Hampshire. There was a mushroom farm just down the road that had been there for a very long time. Locals that had moved in to newer houses complained about the smell year after year. Didn't matter what the farm did it was never good enough. Family that owned the farm finally gave up and sold most of the land to build a few hundred houses on. The complaining locals were really really unhappy over that! I think some people believe that farms should just look pretty and not actually do anything!

Good to hear of your victory. It's sad that it had to be this way though... If only people could treat other people the way they'd like to be treated... I'm a Karma man myself (I even adopted a Romanian recue dog called Karma a week ago as I felt it had to be Karma)...
And to think that with all that on your plate you kept supporting each and every one on here who could benefit from your experience! R E S P E C T!

Glad to hear of your news - sense prevailed in the end but that still doesn't make up for 8 months of hassle for you and your family. Well done!

Really sorry to hear about the PITA shenanigans with the neighbours (I think most of us have tales about neighbours!), but so very glad to hear that the council obviously did their homework and approved you getting on with things as a business.
As Eurogranada and others have said, never understood why folks don't treat others as they'd like to be treated (unless they're a masochist I guess!)
Good to have your threads, and wisdom, back in full flow - all power to tha' suppin' arm lad!

All of what everyone's already said Nothing worse than a neighbour dispute hanging over you because by definition you're stuck with it every waking minute and can't escape. That kind of stress tells after a while. We live next to a working garage (our neighbour ran it out of his outbuilding and when he retired sold it on). There are days when I get home and have to wait while they move something out of the way so I can park. There are mornings when I don't want to be woken up by the sound of a windygun. There are times when I really wish that rotted Isuzu wasn't moored on the corner for months because the owner can't pay the bill. But then there are days when they lend me tools or give advice or generally get me out of a DIY repair hole that my optimistic backside has cornered me in. And suddenly waiting two minutes to park up seems a small price to pay I'm sure if your neighbours had bothered to take the time to get to know you properly they'd have swiftly decided the pros outweighed the cons. And if not, they could always just have tried not acting like cocks . Their loss now.

Another bonus is that when you sell a house you have to inform the buyer of any letters you have sent to your local council regarding the property. Who would want to move into a house next to a grumpy northerner who makes noise, smells, parks cars everywhere and is generally antisocial. If they do wish to move away they may have shot them selves in the foot. Which is always nice to know.

Then again who would want to live in a 5 bed detached period house with 50 metre rear garden, parking for a good handful at the front, double length garage in a really nice semi rural village with all services in the next small town 1 mile away - Just has a bonus the bloke next door down has a little classic car restoration business - he happens to be the most helpful chap in the village too - well into his motors and has a 85 bottle gin collection that he breaks open every weekend - It would be a nightmare living next to him

We had a meeting in the pub last weekend to discuss how we will repair and maintain the driveway we share. All very positive and towards the end I described my plan to extend my garage to create a bit more space, push the back out a metre, raise the roof a bit in one bay to get a lift in and maybe add a car port type thing. I got a surprisingly positive response. My problem clearly isn’t my neighbours, it’s finding a form of words I can use so my OH says in response ‘Great idea, get on with it’.

I assume that when your neighbours decide to move, you will be posting the link here so that we can all put an offer in. Honestly, some people just don't know how lucky they are.

Delighted you had a positive result, Chris. A massive releif after the stress. Thanks for sharing the outcome, it's genuinely appreciated (I need to sit down with my son for a 'chat' as he's at the beginning of his career & wants to go it alone... OK if I PM you sometime?

Good outcome but it must have been stressful. My best experience was the bloke who bought a house right next to a church built in the 14th century and then came round to complain he could hear the bells being rung. Erm - the bell tower is like 200 foot tall and 60 foot square - it's not entirely unmissable. When he asked about precedent I had over 500 years of continuous use up my sleeve.

This was the victory for common sense, as has been said. I am mindful though that some out there will see that their 7 dead engines in the front garden of their semi and the 3 bags of sh*te that they are going to get around to restoring one day, they have already been rotting out front for 9 years without moving, is all good because it's their home and they can do what they like etc etc. There has to be a clear distinction, Grumpy considered the impact on his neighbours and acted accordingly, others couldn't give a monkeys for theirs.

its like people who buy houses right on a main road then complain about traffic noise! Yep, I worked with a chap who (in winter) was proudly telling everyone he had bought a lovely cottage a few doors away from a tradtional pub in a small village, a few months late he was arranging petitions to close their beer garden as his "noisy inconsiderate neighbours" were keeping him awake at night. The Coperage pub / disco in the Quayside party zone at Newcastle has been serving beer since 14th century, it got closed a few years ago as folk in the newly-built (posh) flats complained about the noise www.chroniclelive.co.uk/news/north-east-news/historic-quayside-pub-cooperage-closes-1457534 Also far too many examples where houses & estates have been built next to airports / race circuits, who then have to close due to noise complaints (Croft was my local track before it got restrictions about how many days it could hold races). Thankfully some sensible descisions get made - shame everyone involved has to put up with stress & hassle until the case is closed. Fun times ahead
