Its going outside, under a lean to. Hopefully that'll stop the sound bouncing around keeping neighbours awake. If for any reason it does decide to blow the tank I don't want to be nearby.

Hi, When I was at the bus company there was a compressor that size because we had 1" drive air guns for wheel nuts and blowing up tyres. I suggest you turn the cut off pressure down, you won't need much more than 100 psi and a tank and pump that size will supply 1/2" guns, spray guns and air DA,s. Plus it will give the pump an easier and longer life.

I concur on the pressure switch settings, never going to use more than 100-120psi just large CFM. Might have to take lessons on how Despite it's size its quiet compared to a direct drive unit going 10 times as fast. The large piston must be 500cc or even bigger.

Ha, thank you DS. So every full rotation of the crank will move 1.5L of air? Holy sheet. Massive overkill even running multiple 'DIY' tools Going to clear a new space for it on Sunday and hopefully sort the electrics. The socket (or remains thereof) is close to the wet zone outside so will have to be careful or better still have it relocated whilst it is being repaired. In other news, some scroat broke into the unit next door last night, the one I had all my stuff in upto about 8 weeks ago. I found the door half open when I got round there so called the occupier and stood guard until he arrived then helped him secure it. It gets more complex as they didn't take anything. They then broke through into the next but one unit and ransacked parts of it. Again they appear to have left empty handed so were obviously after something particular and couldn't find it.

I cant see how the pipes are connected between the cylinders and the tank - I was wondering as it's a high pressure unit whether the big cylinder fed the smaller cylinder and the smaller fed the tank as I could not think why they would fit two different sized cylinders.
All you can do is rig up/ fit an alarm and make it is difficult as possible to break in - folks will get into anywhere if they really want to. Sounds a bit odd though, prior knowledge?

Indeed, prior knowledge was the whisper last night. definitely someone who had cause to be in the unit at some point before the two current tennants moved in we think. Big>small>tank could be the answer, this is the best photo I currently have of the top of the heads etc, will get closer tomorrow with a different angle.

Slightly distracted as I got another set of wheels . Going back a bit... After our last tour over to the east coast I think my better half got a bit fed up with draughts, leaks, bumps and rattles in the Dutton Legerra. We got back on the sunday night and later the same night I caught her on auto trader looking at sports convertibles. Sensing what could be a catastrophe in the making I had to interfere a little. Mid engine cars got binned straight off due to poor access, lack of luggage space etc (saves my back changing the dam plugs) That left her with the S2000, Z3's and Z4's (way too expensive) and a rake of MX5's. After churning the options over she decided (with a little persuasion) that the MX5 was coming out on top. Now it was basically down to weeding out the nicest. This was the winner. 53000 miles, 2 documented owners, some service history but very little rust. Roof in good nick, even panel gaps, no signs of any bodywork having been done. At 17 years old it's averaged 3000 mls a year. It was a dealer purchase so maybe a little more expensive than buying privately but with 14 days cooling off period (in case of a change of heart) it seemed like a reasonable plan. She's now had it for ten weeks and we both love it. Having done a few (a lot) of miles over those ten weeks its given me a new goal to aim for with the kit cars. Sure the Legerra is quite quick but it isn't the nicest car to drive especially on long journeys. The MX5 needs more welly to get it upto speed but it's watertight, has power steering and we both find the seats comfortable. Quite importantly, unlike the 3 MR2 roadsters in our little group, we have a functional boot. I know it's not massive but have you seen the luggage space on a mk3 MR2 roadster .... exactly, there isnt any. The only part of the car thats not original is the Fox alloy wheels. Original MX5 wheels should be pennies as so many people have replaced them. Good ones are not easy to come by and to be honest I prefer the Fox's. And so we come back to the beginning of this post. A set of 4x100 / 4x108 multifit alloys with acceptable tyres (although two odd pairs) for £100 on FB marketplace. Not a stupid distance away and to my mind a better looking rim as they have a 2 inch polished lip (or can be polished) They will also go on the Duttons with spacers using the other set of bolt holes so if they don't suit the MX can be used on one of mine. I knew that one had rust / crust issues as it was quite visible in the photo's which is one of the reasons I think they were so cheap. As they have a set of holes at 4x108PCD they can be mounted on my polisher. This is the worst offender, looks to have been run with one pad down to the rivets or a stuck caliper. You can clearly see the crust on the spokes and rim, looks pretty solid too. First pass on the polisher and a little help from a very small rounded screwdriver and I can see alloy rim all round. This doesn't fix the issues between the spokes or the inner rim but at least there are no major defects concealed under the blobs of crud. Next round is a polycarbide soft wheel in the air drill and with the wheel spinning to even out the attack, this helps to remove the last of the very battered clear coat. 800 grit used dry and some coarse wire wool finish that round off to leave a clean rim ready to start the polishing process. I'm not being too fussy with this as the rest of the wheel will need some serious cleaning and i'm not exactly sure how yet. I'm happy with this progress so decided to try the polish a bit early, skipping all the metal prep tools I normally use, just rag on finger to do one section, just to see what happens. You can see some improvement on this one, bit on the right got the finger wagged at it. Job for tomorrow, fit all four and get an opinion from the Mrs. If they meet with approval then i'll finish the refurb properly. If not it will give me a chance to repaint the Fox's as they need a tidy up too.

First test fit, still rough but before going any further decided to see if they fit ok. Not keen on black centres, not sure what alternatives would match / contrast with the red though. I curse anyone who overtightens wheel nuts with an air gun. That took way too much time and energy jumping up and down on a breaker bar My air wrench wouldn't shift them.

Dark grey can look good (that's what I've painted mine on a red MX5 although they don't have the polished rim).

We did have some E-Tech alloy wheel paint in the shop, thats whats been used on the wheel centres on project X. Sadly the supplier we got it from isn't replacing his stock so I'm going to have to get them from E-tech direct. I think the dark grey one I used was called Bavarian Anthracite On the Wolfrace Cyclones (the black centred ones) I quite fancy a dark gold but that failed to meet with approval. I can see them being left and just run as they are while I do something nice with the Fox wheels, then swapping back. I'm sure I can find a car they'll fit if the Mrs opts to keep hers as is.

September update Sadly pictures will have to wait as I haven't uploaded them yet. The compressor. After checking a few bits over I plugged it in. As with all things I didn't know which was off and which was on so of course it fired up straight away, I didn't half jump. Hit the kill switch and then started it in a more controlled manner. The start/stop switches don't do anything, however the big red button does so I have some control. I'll get our local compressor engineer in when I see him, he can sort the three phase switches. I looked inside the control box when I built the mounting bracket, its all a bit squeezed in there and there are a lot more wires than i'm used to. After establishing the fact it fired up I shut all the taps and let it run for about 20 seconds, hit the kill switch and waited for the hissing. The only leak is tiny and from the emergency discharge valve just in front of the T junction on the outlet. I will have to wind the pressure down as the switch is variable between 135 and 214 PSI according to the little plaque. There appears to be a shaft on the side of the box with flats like it's meant to have a knob on. Small spanner should suffice to get it moving. Soaked it in plusgas tonight but not tried turning it yet. I've used one side of the T with a reducer, they a Y junction with two quick release fittings. I've put a 180PSI trap on one side so I can keep an eye on the outlet pressure. Its got a lever tap on each side of the T, both of which still seal perfectly. The other side of the T still has the 3/4 airline fitted and I may use that to run across the workshop to provide air in the other room. There should be enough to run multiple tools with no bother. Whilst playing with airline fittings I decided to plumb up my little blasting cabinet. It always struggled on the old compressor never seemed to be able to shift enough air to provide a decent flow rate. I fitted a second moisture trap on the side of the cabinet with a very short link line so hopefully will get dry air. I had an old pinto inlet manifold knocking about so loaded up and gave it a test run at 60PSI. It made very short work of getting that clean, well impressed with the results. Now to process the rake of old bits I've got stashed, That may take a while. In other news... The last of the cars comes out of storage this week. Its taken ages to make enough room to fit it in the dry (ish) workshop. The older blue body will have to go outside but the white car will now go into the workshop. It's been dry for over 5 years now and I don't want any moisture creeping in before I have a chance to repair the damaged bits. Picked the wrong week for that then I've been welding threaded stubs onto the chassis of project X to support the seat runners. Filling in the gaps between the chassis rails with foam and preparing to make the new floor assembly. I'm hoping the foam will reduce the turbulence under the car, insulate from road noise and the heat thats going to be coming from the exhausts. Sadly, due to a lack of ground clearance, I may have to work out an external route for those. I don't want side pipes as i'd rather have the exits under the back end but there is no obvious through route. This may entail making some small side pod mouldings or some heat shields. The only other alternative is running alongside the prop which is going to make the floor very warm. I'll edit some pictures in tomorrow night.

Sunday 13th October. First off my apologies for failing to finish the previous post by adding the pictures. It will happen but just going to be out of sequence. Last weekend I had to clear the cars out of the other unit and it all got a bit squeezed in unit 6. The yard is once again fully populated, I think I have one space left to shuffle stuff round in. Not the best photo but you'll get the idea. Here's a bit of background on a couple of them. Back left - Black Legerra. After my white one was nearly totalled by a stray firework I spent ages trying to find a new body shell. This one came up in about 2002/2003. The weekend of Donington kit car show I drove my massive blue van down from Bolton and blagged access onto the show field. Put up a small one man tent behind the club stand, dumped all surplus gear inside then set of for the wilds of Norfolk. Finally arriving at about 11pm. Luckily the chap I was buying this from had waited up and an hour later (and £250 lighter) I set off back to Donington. I arrived back at stupid o'clock in the morning and just crashed out across the front seats of the van. A bit later I was woken from my beauty sleep by some of my fellow club members who then helped my unload the poor thing and yes, we parked it on the club stand. It was in a right state, daylight didn't do it any favours. Later in the day they all helped push me around the stand and re-loaded it back into the van along with all the stuff from the tent and off I set, back to Bolton. I was a bit suspicious of the 'unregistered' remains I had purchased but the dutton production number was still on the bulkhead so I contacted the DVLA who informed me that they couldn't find any trace of a car being registered using that VIN. It got parked in a lockup eventually and finally moved over to the house in 2007. Think it looks rather sad with it's eyes popped out The body looks nearly shiny in this shot however its as rough as sandpaper and must have been sitting outside for quite some time before I got hold of it. I never did use it to repair the burnt out one as a better one came up in the mean time. Still suspicious as there were stains on the windscreen from a tax disc holder along with holes and abrasions where the number plates used to go. I'm 99% sure this was once registered but possibly using the original donor's VIN. There's no running gear at all apart from the minimum needed to keep it off the floor and mobile. Front left - Blue Legerra. I originally spotted this as an unfinished project on ebay years ago. It looked complete however it had no ID so was going cheap. I'd stopped chasing bits by then so it got sold and vanished. This photo was saved from the original Ebay advert (yes, I am that sad) Years later, 2016 I think, I was tipped off there was a Legerra in a scrapyard in Derbyshire. The owner of the yard was himself a Dutton owner and club member who knew what it was so kept it to one side. Again I set off on a mission, again I returned £250 lighter but this one had an engine and all the running gear still in place. Sadly someone had the misconceived idea he could cut the top off the doors and make it into something else that hadn't worked out so well, had been abandoned and hence it ended up in a scrapyard. Not sure why a whole roll (possibly two) of parcel tape was needed to hold the boot down, its been there a while and the glue has eaten into the gelcoat. Both front and rear bumpers are missing, A pillar has been cut including the metal tube which gives it rigidity, passenger door has the top 1/3rd removed, dash cut out and all just chucked inside. Some major bits of the body had been damaged, left open to the elements it too was in a bad way. The body has now been removed for dissection. The doors have seized shut and the hinge pins will need to be cut to remove them (more on that later) Again the DVLA could find no trace of that production number being used as a VIN. So I now have two unregistered genuine dutton spare chassis. This is important as the only way you can replace a chassis is with a genuine spare from the manufacturer who stopped making them in 1990. Front centre - Blue Sierra estate. That has it's own story, or will have when I write it. Centre back - Q385FDF. Affectionately known as 'the handbag' due to its apparently 'girly' colour. Again this one has it's own tale to tell ... eventually. The two Phaetons on the right will come to light later on this thread. Back to today. I finally got around to fitting those wheels on the MX5. The 6mm tread T1-R Toyo's fitted to the car when the Mrs purchased it have gone a little weird, like out of round weird. Wheels are fine but there are 'flat spots' causing a slight vibration so I've taken them off to get them checked. Easier to drop off four wheels for checking than leave the car at the garage. I'll get the tyres taken off, check the rims and inside of the tyres, give the rims a quick refurb and then we'll see if it needs new tyres or if the old ones can go back on. I will also check dates while they are off the car. As these are 195/50/15 they are possibly one of the cheapest sizes of T1-R to replace so it may end up just getting a new set fitted. Anywhichway, unless the mrs absolutely loves those Wolfrace wheels then they are just on loan while I sort hers out. Whilst I was playing with the wheel polisher I thought I'd start on one of the sets of Allycats I have lurking in the stores. I picked the worst pair as a demonstration of what can be done. I'd really like access to a lathe big enough to mount these on properly. Sadly those are beyond my budget, one I enquired about four years ago was over £40K My converted wheel balancer just spins the rim fast enough to keep the power tools from making the rim uneven. On these Allycats I'm aiming for functional and clean not show polish. First shot is the rim before I'd touched it, brushed off the loose flaky stuff and bolted it up. First pass with a polycarbide wheel mounted on the air drill followed by a coarse 2 inch disc from an Abracs set of Roloc type thingies. I find these really useful as they are a really quick thing to swap discs on. I've done both front and rear beads at this point, back down to bare metal so I can paint them and get a good air seal. I've primered the inner part of the rim (the bit inside the tyre) and left it to dry over night before I top coat it with black gloss. I'm actually changing this pair to gold centres to match a pair of good condition 6" rims. The spokes should be painted but this set has already been on a lathe once (a long time ago) and i'm not sure about the sharp edges taking the paint properly even with etch primer. I'll be finishing that part of the rim first so it can dry while I do rim number two. That'll give me some way of picking it up without touching the polished part when its done. I spent the second half of the afternoon on a purchase collection mission. Some Sierra alloy engine mounts won on ebay for £5.70, cost me £10 in fuel to collect but was worth it. I've had issues in the past with the angled ford mounts common on the Escort and Cortina, even the RS alloy ones have issues in a Legerra due to the shape of the Dutton engine mounts. Switching to the alloy Sierra ones and polybushes seemed the easiest improvement. More to follow, hopefully tomorrow night.

Sunday 20th October. Decision made on Sues wheels for the MX5 - MiataMark was right, darkish grey, steel wheel colour to be exact. I offered to cut back and polish the flat faces part but grey was fine by the boss so... Moving on.. The reason that was taken at the odd angle - I was playing tease with some of my FB mates. There is another car concealed behind the red one (badly on purpose) Picked this up today. 1998 car imported in 2004. Cheap... It has some subtle differences from the red one - bodykit, no foglight holes in the front bumper, air con, electric mirrors, massive chrome fuel flap, strut brace, I also think it has an LSD... got instant oversteer when doing an 'enthusiastic' U turn It's nippy too... Spent quite a lot of time today, changing the 16" wheels for those wolfrace 15's (the 16's didn't hold air very well), jet washing a years foliage out of all the corners. The inside is rough, not damaged but dirty and showing its age. On the surface it looks too good to break, nothing is conspicuously rotten, rattling or insecure. Could of course be a complete tea bag underneath. I think I may even take it for an MOT, see what's wrong before I decide. It'd be a shame to break if its viable for someone to restore. If it is a teabag then it'll get broken and the complete drivetrain will find a new home under a Dutton.

Whilst digging out bits for a fellow member of this fine community one of the lads who works on the pallets up the end of the yard asked if I could lend him the airline to check his tyres. Opened the big shutter and happily ran the airline out. Does his tyres, puts the airline away and thanks me. So I go to shut the big roller shutter. Bit noisier than usual so I turned round to look at the other end only to realise I'm looking higher than I should be. Letting go of the button I step back and oops... It would appear that one of the slats got snagged on the cladding, bent the cladding into the path of the other slats Spent the next hour up the step ladder with a crowbar and a lump hammer straightening it all out. Managed to get it shut eventually but won't be using it again until i've staightened all the bent bits and modified it so it can't happen again. Good job my nearest neighbour is a distance away.

Well, the roof went down, the sun shone and the darkside has another member in it's ranks... for the moment. R563ENF MAZDA MX5 Colour - Black Fuel type - Petrol Date registered 31 December 1998 MOT valid until - 28 October 2020 Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories): Nearside Front Service brake binding but not excessively (1.2.1 (f)) Nearside Front Tyre worn close to legal limit/worn on edge On limit (5.2.3 (e)) Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i)) Its not perfect by any means, needs paintwork, one small rust repair, drivers side window is temperamental and it lets in a little water but that could just be because it's been standing out in some very heavy rain recently.
Apparently then, there is life in this one yet. I got down in the pit and had a good poke around, chassis / body looks solid underneath, fully undersealed but some time ago. Suspension arms look scabby but not rotten. Might even tax it and put a few more miles on it. It'll be good for winter as the heater is amazing. (just having a heater at all is a bonus.)

Well that two months flew past Apart from a little messing with the steering and bodywork Project X hasn't made any significant progress. There's no real heating and that unit is way colder than my previous one so visits have been restricted of late. Can't do any glassing up on the Phaeton so kind of ground to a halt. The Eunos on the other hand has had a bit of TLC while I've been at the shop. I've now done over 1k miles in it and it's just getting better. Timing belt and pulleys replaced, oil drained, flushed (with proper flush not one of the additive type) and three filters used in a day. Aux belts changed and all the tensions checked. Evap can removed, body drains cleaned out and it's now a much nicer place to be. 600 mile round trip to Kent completed just before Xmas with no issues, 200 + miles of that was done with the roof down (and the heater turned up) The pioneer stereo was obviously imported in the vehicle as the FM frequency range stops at 89.9 and goes back to the high 70's, NOT the usual ranges at all. One of the blessings of this being I don't get Radio one or anything above it but the little FM repeater struggles to drown out the static so i'll have to fit an off switch for the antenna so it retracts when I don't need it. Steering wheel changed for a new leather mountney, the old 15" rim was filthy, ingrained deep into the foam / vinyl. The new 14" rim is way better. This of course meant I had to delete the airbag and stop the warning light from flashing. A simple 3Ω resistor across the socket fooled the air bag control into thinking it was still fitted. Warning light off but passenger side still functional. I still have to engineer a fix for the horn though, for now its on the dash as a push button. Did the usual thing and binned the green condom covered 501's in the cluster in favour of some blue LED's which coincidentally match the blue digihud display on my phone. Vast improvement however I still need to do the ones in the heater controls which may or may not have died but are very dim. I gave it a bit of a rub over with some polish too. There are some key scratches on the boot which have gone through to the metal and the lacquer is flaking off the front nearside wing, other than that the body is very good for it's age. Now before anyone asks yes, the plate is small. I've got away with it so far. There is a section in the MOT regs that states imported vehicles without enough space to securely mount a UK size plate can use smaller plates. I know this one is taking the p**s but I need to make a replacement plinth to fix a new plate to. The mirror housings need re-painting as does the lower edge of the front spoiler. That'll keep until the weather improves. I didn't want to like this car but it's grown on me and I can't help but think it's here to stay.. for a little while at least, maybe just until the summer... maybe the end of summer, who knows.

On the subject of it being a bit chilly I could keep the old double height unit warm with one small space heater. half hour on full gas then it could be turned down to tickover or even switched over to a fan heater just to keep the warm air circulating. The unit I'm in now I've got no chance, too much uninsulated metal, too many high level gaps. Reckon i'll need a case of cavity wall foam to make it half way 'sealed'.

MX5's - the death of kits cars - Buy a donor MX5 for your project and never actually build or finish the kit/project as you are having too much fun driving.
