Looks guilty Right, lets get through these 911s then. But they really are, apart from anything else I love the sheer chutzpah of Porsche to smash the homologation trap wide open. "It's fine", laughed the FIA bods when drawing up the rules. "No-one will build the needed 50 cars to exploit the five-litre rather than the normal three litre capacity limit." Oh yeah? went Porsche, rolling out a car so insanely overpowered and evil-handling that many of even hardened Le Mans psychopaths were scared of driving them flat out. A longer tail and some fins and the 917s legend status was guaranteed. A 917 still holds the fastest lap time around the Sarthe circuit... admittedly before it was changed to slow it down...an average speed of almost 138 mph. That film by Steve McQueen didn't hurt either. So here's one from yesterdays Festival of Speed, just to bring us up to date. Probably the most stunning vehicle a human being ever created Atalantique by Nick Liassides, on Flickr ...and an announcement That'll probably be the last one I'll bother with posting. I've been doing a lot of thinking and come to the conclusion it simply isn't worth my bothering posting photos any more. I don't have the time for no reward whatsoever. The fault is probably mine and I'm living in the past but if I'm going to spend literally hours sorting stuff out to post and have three people respond then frankly &%$? it. So I'm going to do what I should have done years ago and take myself off to Instagram where at least people have to courtesy to let you know if they like your work I've had this same discussion many times over many years with many people and I've often argued that forums only work if everyone puts in a bit. It's a contributory thing and it's no surprise that most forums have died over the years because most people clearly can't be bothered to contribute. It's obvious that they simply want what they can get without it costing them anything at all, not even the time it take to reply. Facebook is part of the problem but I suspect most of it is pure and simply human nature and therefore there's very little point going blue int he face trying to argue against it. Maybe this is simply the wrong venue (although there are few enough other worthwhile forums left to compare to, to be fair) but it's noticeable that many previous stalwarts of RR's most unique and fascinating content have gradually withered away over time. I think if someone can scroll through over 300 photographs of some of the most iconic, rare, valuable and downright stunning competitive motor vehicles from the whole of human history and not find a single damned thing to say then it's probably just completely hopeless bothering. So I'm no longer bothering. Thanks to everyone who did take the time and trouble to give their input, it was greatly appreciated. You know who you are, lol

Nick - That then is a sad day - I for one can fully appreciate the time & commitment that it takes to take the pics, upload then sort through them prior to even posting them anywhere - that said I do get a little payback when a RR member views my build threads and then appears with something that they would like work undertaken upon - whilst you on other hand get zilch other than a few thankyou's - I will say though regardless of how good anybody's pics are it all relies upon if those pics or subject matter interest the reader in the first place - I'm has guilty has anyone else - your Porsche pics I scrolled straight through them they simply don't interest me - never liked the car, the manfacture or what they built 'Ever' so I choose to ignore them - likewise I have posted a few threads recently that whilst I personally think & feel should draw interest they have drawn but very little one being an important educational project & the other a rare museum project - both directly involving vehicles both with very few views & replies - yet someone posts a thread about a scrap customised Marina and they are all over it 7,000 views & 130 odd replies

Please don't think that just because people don't reply to your threads, that they don't appreciate your photos. Not to forget all the writing to accompany them, which marks out your threads from many other people's event threads. Most of the events you've covered here I've never been to in person so having an insightful and personal take on them is the next best thing.
I can understand why you're stopping doing this with all the work involved but do hope it's not the last we hear from you.

It starkly demonstrated that it's me who's in the wrong place and it would be a waste of effort to try to make it any different. I don't think there actually is a forum for people like me, and I suspect the time has passed by about a decade to make it worth setting one up. I'm clearly weird; I'm quite happy to read a book, whereas it seems 95% of people nowadays would spend hours watching rednecks on YouTube putting air-ride on rusty bangers, they'd never read a written word or turn a page in anger. I really fear for humanity as a species because intelligence seems to be running in reverse now. People are incapable of learning things for themselves without it being beamed directly into their brain via a video clip (of preferably less than 5 minutes becos, y'know, attention span and that) but I suppose that's again a discussion for a different venue. The thing is, this place has changed and the Readers Rides part has always been a huge part but increasingly seems to have become all that's left. For me the interest always came from the related but more outre thread; Bruce's homemade laser, the How to Make Panels sorta stuff. I expect everyone only reads the stuff that interests them and that's normal but if I read something I make a comment because that's called interaction and it's what makes a forum. We all build the car we want, but anyone who says they do it in a vacuum and don't give a damn if people like it or not is frankly lying. It might not be the prime motivation, but if you genuinely don't care what people think, you wouldn't post it on the internet. And if that's the case (which it just is) then you want to be told. Again, I'm a bit weird because I can usually find something to like in most genres. So in the example quoted, I'm utterly unmoved by road-going Porsches but I love the racers and admire the engineering, even if they're not exactly "my thing". Not that I'm suggested everyone should be like this, but in that post was everything from a 1903 Mercedes to last years' Formula 1 car. I can't believe anyone with an interest in cars can't find a single thing to like. As to the museum project thing, if I see a thread started by @grumpynorthener then I want to start it when I've time to read it properly and digest and reply because I know it's going to be a worthwhile investiture of time. Some I don't even bother to open because I've no interest in the car at all but if I do then I'll at least post a reply so the person knows their efforts are appreciated and it's worth their bothering. But like I said all along, I'm not saying I'm right and everyone else is wrong. And I'm not trying to force the rest of the world to be as I think it would be better off being. I'm just saying that if no-one else gives a damn about what I'm trying to do here then I won't bother because it's just a waste of my time

This is a sad day for me. I love the show reports you throw out. I'll probably never get to any in the UK again, so these allow me to "be there" and be (generally hugely) entertained at the same time. Still, I can appreciate the overall sentiment you espouse, even if I don't like the conclusion.

DO NOT STOP DOING WHAT YOU DO!!!!! I don't start too many threads since my return, I went AWOL for a few years because life got in the way, and tbh, many of the threads didn't interest me. I'd have a quick scan through when I could and go again. I did that for years. I can't remember when I returned to posting, or why for that matter, but what I do remember was being drawn in by your Brighton Breeze thread. Great photos of the subject matter I was into plus informed, intelligent, witty, humourous and downright literary quality write ups. Then there was this thread, and the write up for the Beryl. All top quality stuff. I'm sure there's others who have similar views. This forum will be a poorer place if you stop doing your stuff. It's like the opposite of what Mr Spock said in the radiation chamber in Star Trek The Wrath of Khan, the posts of the few outweigh the non posts of the many. Please continue to to entertain the few with your pics and musings.

I'll still be here, just won't be bothering to do the show report stuff. Beryl will continue, lol I only started doing this stuff when part of the RX-7 forums (which have mostly now withered away due to no-one bothering to post on them, BTW... lesson from history right there). We all knew each other pretty well as it was a small community but we'd get maybe 20 or even more cars at a show. Like everyone else, I'd add pics to the "Japshow Finale" thread or whatever when I got home. People always said they liked my photos and the words I wrote and wanted more from each show so I kinda got sucked into it and it continued here when I joined up. It was never meant to end up like this, lol I've never thought I'm an especially great photographer technically but I can generally see an interesting angle or a shot most people might not consider, but I started taking photos for me and it still surprised me if people liked them. Now it's got to the point I've got thousands I don't have time to go through myself and no-one gives a toss. I probably ought to make up a website of my own or something, but then no-one would visit that either so that'd be just as much a waste of time I'll just have to content myself with bunging a couple on Insta every so often. Just like everyone else I genuinely do think that the greatest failure of modern humans is their inability to listen to anyone else though. I do blame social media; we've created a culture where everyone is trying to shout "me me me ME ME" into the void louder than everyone else, but no-one is actually taking the time to care or say "yeah, you for once"
