Dose anybody know what the legal criteria is when fiting exhausts to modded cars? I have done a quick build over the last week on an Ital estate: 2ltr O series engine Fast road cam twin carburettors Rally Suspension Lowered 1 inch all around Anti Roll bars front and back Oil cooler Dolly Sprint Alloys I have used a modified tubular manifold and this will work grate with the twin carbs but I will have to either modify the existing exhaust system to connect it or use a cusom exhaust. My idea was to use a streight pipe on a 30 degree bend from the down pipe under the car out to the side but I just need to know what the decibell levels should be if I have to use a thin silencer. The car will be very loud without! I have built the car on a strict budget of £150 including the car (it was FREE!... after all it was an Ital!) Can anybody help?? THis is a photo of how the engine bay looks (it was taken when the engine was in another Marina) My digi camera broke so I'm having to wait and get my conventional camera developed! It is to be my new daily hack through the winter.

I beleive the legal decibell limit is 97.

i don't think i have ever had my noise level checked though, and every MoT tester that has looked at my bike (which runs an illegal race can) has never kicked up or tested the noise. this just says it needs to restrict it to a volume considered average for the vehicle www.motuk.co.uk/manual_710.htm

On my Mini I had a 1/75" straight through system, LCB, RC40 style back box. On my XR4x4 I had a 4" straight through system from the turbo to one back box. Both loud enough to wake the dead... well car alarms anyway... and never had a problem. Even if you do fail the noise regs, because the police may check them, you will be given time to rectify the problem and go for a re-test.

i was thinking about doing the same with the chevette, taking out both boxes and having the exhaust ewxiting infront of the drivers side rear wheel, thus eliminating the bend over the axle and both silencers. will this be too loud?

Never really been hassled about noise either, but then I don't think there's a quiet Imp in existance anyway so they'd have nothing to compare it to to say if it was too noisy!

Thank you for your feedback!
I will have a play tomorrow and see how loud the beast really is! First I I have to fit my oil cooler: £30 off the bay! Cheap as chips!
Hopefully I will get close to 100bhp on the rolling road... in an Ital.. It actualy looks pretty smoooth!

I know people who have used that flexipipe but I never have. Think you can get it in various diameters etc... I haven't seen the Ital close up for a long time & it has been standing for years. I presume it's still there though haven't been that way for a few months now!!! I can try to get some details but may take a week or so

my sidies are piped up with the flexi pipe. really good stuff, fairly bending and it can be welded. i paid £20-25 can't quite remember for about 10 foot of 1 1/2" diameter. the local motor factors ordered it in for me and it only took half a day. i think tractors use it a fair bit to so that might be worth a try.

Thanks for the advice.
I will have to sort it this week. Jetex do the flexi pipe stuff and they are just down the road from me in stratford so I might pop over to see them.
Thank You!

don't use flexi pipe if you can help it it realy restricts flow if you need a bend buy a bend looks much better as well

heres a picture, now they are loud!!! i my record is 12 cars in a 20 parking space underground carpark. its manifold-flexi-twin thrush 6ft sidies went straight thu MOT at the weekend. if i remember i will take a pic under it to show the flexi but i will agree with nightmare tho they are rather restricting because there "ribbed" (for her pleasure)

Oldskool I SO love your Viva, man. Top car! ;D I never thought about flexi-pipe being restrictive but it makes sense dunnit! At the prices Oldskool said though, it's a lot cheaper than buying separate bends...
Whilst were on about exhausts, what kind of difference does it make to backpressure etc with having them exit at the side rather than the back? The aerodynamics help shift the fumes if at the back but I don't know how much difference that'd make unless you're building an F1 car... plus, sidies look cool! ;D

I think that as long as you have some kind of silencer on a system so that the tester can see you've made an effort then you'll probably get a pass. I wouldnt fancy trying to get a ticket on a car with no silencer's at all though.
