Always liked MK2 Golfs, a few friends have had them and always liked the idea of a 20VT version. So I bought a Non running MK4 GTI. Got it running quite easily by tracing a blown fuse. The alternator isn't charging either, the fuse board ontop of the battery has a blown to the alternator. So I'm guessing the guy I bought it off crossed the jump leads. It's an AGU 150bhp engine, apparently with a remap. I have no proof of this, and it doesn't seem too quick. So maybe he was lying. This is when I brought it home. I've sold a few bits off it. So it owes me very little at the moment. Here is my Jade green 3 door GTI. It has some bits missing, not been on the road since 2010 I think. I didn't pay much for it, and I very much think I paid waaaaay too much. But I always do when buying cars. I did some digging around online and found a thread; Link hereWhere someone was considering buying it for 500 quid in 2008. I've almost relieved the 20V from the MK4. The MK2 needs almost everything doing. My plan is to fit the heated Recaros, rear brake, engien box etc out of the MK4 into the MK2.

Engines out. Seats out, see they've got some paint, and some mould on them. The car leaked a lot of water in. Rear footwells are nearly over the exhaust tunnel. Glad I'm not using much more of the interior. Hopefully the seats will come up with a jetwash and long scrubbing. It's off to the scrapyard tomorrow. Then hopefully I can make a start on the Mk2.

Thanks for that. I've read a few build threads, guides etc Found the wiring guide on clubgti. But I'm sure I'll no doubt have lots of questions. I'm going to pickup a Mk3 fuel tank later. Going to do the stubby Focus master cylinder swap. Then it's just the pedal box i've got to sort out I think.
I've got a Vauxhall engine running in my mini, so hopefully this should be a bit simpler as nearly everything is bolt on VAG parts. Just the wiring to slow me down.

Don’t forget you’ll need a conversion downpipe, although they say the ibiza cupra downpipe fits the mk2

+1 for trackslag stuff. It’s not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. My downpipe is a qpeng item as I got it for £100 off ebay but the rest was a brand new trackslag system. Fits perfectly and the good reputation shows

Thanks guys, I've got a really low budget for this at the moment. I picked up a mk3 tank on the weekend. Just a pedalbox left to go. If I have the G60 front engine bracket, do I need the stubby master cylinder?
I good friend of mine is a dap hand with a welder, so I'll see if I can convince him to make me a downpipe, he did for my Turbo MX5.

I’ve got a huge ABF master on mine, solid Tmount front bracket, standard rear and B4 passat gearbox bracket. My master cylinder is nowhere near.
The mk2 20vt fb page is a wealth of knowledge. But I warn you, there’s very little chance of a low budget mk2 20vt! I tried that. Took me 18 months (with a 6 month break) and everything I took from the mk4 was free as it was my lasses car.

Yeah I know doing it on a budget won't be easy. But I got my MK4 cheap and sold enough off it, that after keeping the running gear, I'm slightly in profit. I know from previous projects its all the little things that add up. (My minis fuel system cost more than this MK2)
I have a few left overs from my MX5 turbo that will help. I think for the conversion, all I need is pedal box, and misc parts like hoses and stuff. Maybe a couple of mounts and stuff. I have some engine brackets to try. The expensive part will be fixing up the car itself I think. Should make some progress in a couple of weeks once I clear some space. The Mk2 is in my back garden atm.

The best budget advice I can give is try and get stuff like the pedal box, clutch hydraulics and hubs off a B4 passat. No scene tax there!
I bought my pedal box, clutch hydraulics, gearbox, front/gearbox bracket and hubs from someone breaking a B4 for £200. Saved me a good amount. You can pay £150 just for a corrado pedal box nowadays!
I also used early vr6 280 calipers. Much cheaper than G60s (mine were free as a nipple had snapped) and they’re the same.

its a killer to do the conversion these days as the costs are so high on things... supply and demand.
Adi has made some good suggestions there, try to avoid the corrado bits and go for the B4 as its all the same.
or keep an eye out for someones half finished project and buy it cheap, i picked up all my conversion parts for £1k, thats the engine, all mounts, downpipe, Audi S2 brakes, braided lines etc etc etc etc.... but be warned...its all the little things that add up! bolts etc

I've been to a few RR gatherings and never taken a retro car, I trailered my Mini to weekender last year, but doesn't count in my head. So I am determined to take my MK2 to the gathering this year. I have no ticket yet, so looking out for a camping if anyone had one. My MK2 has been in my garden rusting since I bought it. So today I shifted some things about and got it out. This is where it sat for the last 7 months, rusting in the garden. Only a few rounded driveshaft bolts holding in the 8V engine now. Hopefully I can get them ground off tomorrow. Some work to do in here as well. Something was living in the drivers seat I think. Tucked up to try not to annoy neighbours too much. There's lots more to do than I thought. There's no brake lines, no exhaust, lots of missing bolts and lots of rust.

I've got a hydro pedalbox to fit into it, but looking at it, it might be a MK3 item, instead of the carrado I was told it was. I/ve got a grinder and welder and hammer, I'm sure I can make it fit.
That brackets looks a good option, i wish i'd seen it sooner.

Yeah, this things a dog. Got no problems with drilling holes in it. If I cant get it to work though. I'll be ordering that bracket. Had a look under the dash, its had an aftermarket alarm fitted. And loads of cut wires, some twisted together and taped. So on the look out for a CE1 loom if theres one about?
