Chris, Window are white UPVC double glazed units (all 3 with an opener on one side), doors are custom made wooden ones. Main doors will be old style double openers. I was thinking I'd try my 2.5mm tip spray gun for the paint - especially painting the roof & roof timbers - took me weeks on my old workshop to do those bits! If I can thin it enough to come out of the gun then I only have to mask up the windows and it should be a fairly quick job. Rebuilda - see above

2.5mm should produce a good flow even with 'semi' thinned paint. I've done set builds with a std 1.8 / 2mm nozzle lobbing emulsion onto ABS sheet, took less than four hours to do the same square area as four or more people with rollers used to take two days to cover.
I've got to do my 'new' unit before I move in over the next couple of weeks, my turn to do a garage 'build' I guess. Just have to wait and see how bad it actually is when the current occupants move out. I'm swapping with a stonemason who needs to expand his business and i'm getting a lockable gated yard thrown in as a 'thank you'.

^^^sounds like a good swap Windows in today - oooh!! looking good. He also got all the edgings and lath fixed ready for rendering. I fixed the template for the fan on the wall tonight so he can chop that out before rendering as well. Completion date next Friday (including the patio) if weather holds out.

Its looking good now, its great when you pay people to do stuff like this as it happens a lot quicker than DIY, that's as long as you have a decent builder and yours seems to be doing OK!

I know my limits - I could do most of the work, but not brickwork (without learning anyway) but I don't have the time running my own business.
Paying Mick to do it has it's issues - it's not finished to the standards I would finish it to, but I will do plenty of work after he is done. It needs painting inside & out, wiring, lighting, heating, shelving, screeding the floor and possibly some sort of loft. Also I'll have more work doing some fancy soffit lighting outside as well.
I'm looking forward to having a proper project to keep me amused for a few months again - bloody bored now car is finished!!!

Going to have much fancier lights than that Pete. Either downlights at each gable and 8m of led lights along the side or possibly full led lights all round. Leds are multi colour & dimmable with full remote control. If I do end up with a LED spotlight it will be one of the new Quinetic lamps - no wiring of switches at all, only power to lamp. Switch is self powering and has about 250m range outside. Today builder did well, he cut the hole for the extractor; And rendered 3 sides of the garage - first coat but it's transformed the looks and I'm very pleased how smart it looks. Eagle eyed people will see one end window missing - frame had cracked?? so I got Mick to return it and have a new one made up.

Thanks Robert. Did some cleaning up today ang made a start on getting the electrics back in. Those of a nervous disposition please look away - electrics are only temporarily mocked up to get a striplight & compressor running - it will all be done properly soon. I had a go at spraying the walls - paint said do not thin (its masonary paint) so it did not come out very well. I thinned it a little and its slightly better. I'll ignore the warning & thin it more - it may just need more coats, but the speed compared to using a brush will be worth it. I had a different go with the emulsion for the roof & woodwork, it needed a bit of thinning but this worked very well, this will make life so much easier.

Looks great.
I sprayed my garage with masonry paint when I moved in. I think i ended up at something like 50 / 50 paint to water to get it thinned enough to spray properly. It took a couple of coats but did make a big difference in covering all the pores in the block walls which is a mare with a roller.
I think i did 2 coats but 3 or 4 would have probably been better. Or a couple of sprays followed by a roller top coat.

Good to hear Jono, spraying certainly gets into the pores of the blocks easily so I will persue the spraying option.

A tip I was given, many years ago, when spraying paint that shouldn’t have really been applied that way was: “get it roughly the consistency of milk”.

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

Thats exactly what I used to tell the people I was working with when set building. Trying to get Dulux non- drip down to 'milk' viscosity is a challenge...

I did think of using milk but it tends to smell when dry and does not really make the walls very white. So.....I thinned the paint by just chucking around 50% water in the tin (it was less than half full) and giving it a damn good shake. Opened it up and it was like milk - but did not taste like milk though so resisted the temptation of putting it in my tea. Sprayed the wall with it until the paint ran out. Then moved on to doing the roof joists, borrowed the Mrs soup ladle, pyrex mixing jug and a serving spoon from the kitchen and proceed to mix up 50/50 emulsion & warm water mix. Chucked it in my big JGA gun and sprayed all of the joists. Worked well but has also covered everything in emulsion paint splatter Think I'll carry on with the joists being sprayed but might roller the flat roof panels.

Yeah.. about that spatter.. It used to be an issue when we were working on a grass field base so we just worked over a sheet of hardboard and down from the top. Maybe try a little more water in the mix or an increase in gun pressure (don't know why I typed that looking back at the pop build thread and trying to teach you how to paint with a gun)

Should you not have painted the Fascia boards before fitting the gutters?
Also, you might want to consider some line drainage to a soak away in front of the doors? They only cost around £12 per metre so you would only need 3 really?

^^ 1 - yes, gutters will be removed when I get round to that bit. 2 - There is a cut in the concrete - this is because the whole front pad is going to be broken up and a ramp put in. This will have to wait a year as it will be done in conjunction with the house extension. I'll probably chisel a small gutter in temporarily combined with a rubber scraper on the bottom of the doors.

Let me know if I can be of assistance in supplying materials when you start to extend. I work for a national merchant as a buyer so can offer good rates for a fellow RR'er.
Can also arrange deliveries etc as we have a transfer order system that sends the order to your nearest branch i.e. Priced and entered by me, but delivered from your nearest branch (Staines or Walton probably??)
