I'm becoming more and more tempted by 80s/90s Mercedes for a daily driver for next year.. I'm thinking i could get quite a bit of luxury and retroness for a decent price tag. Given that most of them are 2.0 or 2.2 Petrol engines, i don't know if they are the best Luxo daily choice though? What are best models to buy? Also most economical / reliable considering its a daily? I had a look for Diesels in the late 80s/ early 90s models but didnt see many (this might be for the best as i live in London). I'm thinking Automatic 190's as they're still cheap and W124 coupes but don't know anything about them ... would LOVE a w123 but, i they have gone out of the £1500 budget i'm thinking. I wish!

This is my old luxo barge, bought from this very parish. Mine's just into 2000 but there are 99's around for not much cash. I comes under the 'arm-and-leg' category for petrol running costs but it wafts like a good'un. AL.

We have a 1989 190E, 2.0 petrol, with a manual box (!) On a run it does 40mpg, its not a car to drive fast, its to cruise.
Auto is a bit thirstier. Either way, nothing is quite so good at soothing a curse word day away. Hilarious levels of body roll, steering that you twirl the wheel like an old steamboat... Love it.
And ours has been round the 'Ring!

I've had a few benz's, 123s 124s and 126s, and I loved them all. On this occasion I'm going to state the case for the 124. Both of mine were E220s with autos. One a saloon and one a coupe. Round the doors they both did 30-32 mpg, and on a run I got 42. Luxury wise they were both cracking. My coupe was better spec'd than than the saloon, and had working seatbelt butler's. "Normal" people often commented on how well appointed it was compared to their more modern cars. Both were in top nick, however arches can rot, especially with those nasty chrome trims, and the rear window on coupes often delaminates down both sides. Both had 150k plus and you wouldn't have known it. Top class motor cars, I'd recommend one every day. Saying that, I'd also recommend a 500 sec and w123. Sorry I haven't posted any pics, I use my phone and I have no idea how to do it.

I've had three 190's in the past and still fancy another some day. I've driven a couple of W124's and W126's and would have any one ofharder.Always wanted a W123 but finding one in decent nick and at the right price is getting harder no matter which one you're after. I'm no expert but I would say they originally called a late '90's Mercedes CL home...

My in-laws have a 1988 230e W124 for holiday home duties in France. It's relatively low spec (cloth, black bumpers and hub caps) but all round electric windows and a nice place to waft along. Returns good mileage once we'd fixed a few running issues, despite being an auto. I would think you'll struggle to get a coupe for under £1500? If you haven't seen the film Buffalo Soldiers, he drives a very tasty black SEC which gives me all of the want link
