I always loved my Sprint, and have been toying with the idea of getting another. But they are hard to find. Your Tolly on the other hand is a perfect combination of old and new Triumph plus a dollop of modern J reliability and technology. I think it would be a worthy sprint substitute. Similar in some respects but probably better in others. I love it! Bookmarked.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Although I’ve done a lot of work to the car, it is still a product of Mr Toledo; Shoey. I’ve decided I’m not happy with the steering wheel, although it looks great it’s a bit flexible which isn’t confidence inspiring. So I’m now looking for a sturdier 70mm pcd steering wheel to suit the boss I have.

I’ve been going bits and bobs on the Toledo this last few weeks whilst I wait for the new carpet set to turn up. I’m desperate to fit the new seats but not much point until the carpet is in. in the meantime I’m half way through the dolomite headlight conversion and today my new wheels arrived. Compomotive 13x5.5 ET33, similar to the sprint wheels in spec so should fit without rubbing 🤞

It was a second hand eBay purchase so I think it’s unlikely to be genuine given the flex. I think it’s destined for a bin, win some you loose some.
I have actually bought a 1994 momo wheel that looked great in the car and isn’t flexible. It was however a little faded so I treated it to a bit of black leather colourant and satin top coat. The result is terrible so I’m going to have to strip it off an start again! It’s turning into a steering wheel debacle 🤦♂️

Front looks good, is there any metalwork involved or is it all bolt on?

Thanks teaboy. There is a headlamp mounting panel behind which on a Dolomite is welded in. I’ve just bolted mine in so it’s reversible if ever I want to. In fact everything is reversible about the conversion and I’ve carefully stored the Toledo parts for the future. I actually grew to like the Toledo front end a lot but still fancied trying the Dolomite look.

Quad headlights are a major win in my book and well worth the (quite considerable IIRC) effort. Look way nicer and work way better. I always liked the Sprint wheels..... but great looking car whatever Nick

Mega looking thing I'm definitely a quad-headlight fan in general, and on these cars especially.

I always liked the Sprint wheels..... but great looking car whatever Nick I think the Sprint wheels looked ace but there were two problems. They are sprint wheels, which is the norm for any modified Toledo/Dolomite, and they are bare alloy. Shoey had them professionally refurbished and diamond cut when he built the car but its a massive pain to keep them looking good and frankly i’ve had enough of polishing and waxing the wheels. Ive cleaned the wheels 50x more than the rest of the car. I probably could laquer them but i don't think they would look as good. I’ll sell them on to someone with more motivation for wheel cleaning, or who uses their car less I’ve done about 500 miles this year.

This Is brilliant. Subtle period correct mods on the outside. Stonking modern engine under the bonnet! Brilliant. Must be a thing when you do minis, you like this, my first car was a mini with a c16se in haha.
Bookmarked for the journey

Actually the pickup was my second mini build. My first was a Suzuki Swift GTI conversion on my clubman whilst I was at uni and I’ve got a 1998 Cooper S Works I’m restoring currently (rust fest).

I thought the cool people started with minis then realised how awful they are and moved onto J stuff haha. Jokes aside id have another (well probably not a mini, a spaceframe with mini panels at a push haha). I have got a soft spot for them.. aslong as someone else is fixing the rot, and living with windows that don't clear doors that don't seal and quirks that make them very well ermm quirky haha Only pic I've got to hand on here. Was a handful, especially with the nitrous on .. was cover car of Mini Magazine sometime around 05/06.. kinda wish I'd never sold it. It popped up for sale a few years back and I wish I could have afforded it back. Just for the memories. Me and my dad built it from a bare shell starting when I was 15, all done at home. The hours that went into that over 2+ years doesn't bear thinking about

Looks like a neat install. They certainly are not perfect and I went away from dailying minis for all the reasons you list. But you can’t beat the mini handling, they are such fun to chuck about even if they are slow.
Keep an eye out and you never know, your old car will probably re appear at some point

I went c16xe in mine. Had it 19 years and can't imagine ever getting rid of it.

I love the new look. The dark coloured wheels and grille work really well together. Also it´s such a big win that it´s not a four door, like the Sprint. Excellent.

I keep my eye out but I haven't seen it for a good few years now. Be a shame that it's sat rotting

I’ve been continuing to tinker with the Toledo over the last few weeks but mainly putting miles on. I’m waiting for the carpet set to arrive before I do the rest of the interior in one go. In the meantime I’ve fixed a few minor wiring issues on the gauge lights and modified the column adjusting bracket so it clamps better. I’ve ordered an atb differential as part of a group buy on the dolomite Facebook page. I’m planning to build up a mega rear axle, also with thicker/stronger half shafts, rear disk conversion and possible a new CROWN wheel and pinion. The lack of traction let’s it down when driving hard and i want to do it right. pictures of recent fun
