Some fair points on the harnesses. I read up quite extensively on them a while back and came to the same conclusions Teaboy mentioned. Schroth make some which are retractable so you get the benefit of a normal seatbelt (i.e you can move around a bit) and the support of the harnesses but I couldn't find any mounting points I was happy with without welding to get the angles right. I did find one place that makes bolt-in harness bars using the original front seat belt mounting points so I guess that could be an option. For now though this is a fast road car with occasional track use so I think the new more supportive seats combined with stock belts should suffice

I've heard of those before but I didn't think you could buy them new - thanks! Believe it or not, I actually bought a 944 battery cover from them last night! (same as MK2 but without the scene tax). Would have ordered that at the same time if I'd known doh! I'm keeping hold of the Rallye seats for now sorry. Wrapped up safe in the attic.

Have you made sure the drain holes inside the bottom of the doors aren't blocked with waxoyl?
Ignore me if I'm patronising you.

Recovering from Covid-19 with post-viral fatigue means I'm good for nothing. This is a cracking car and a great write up - cheered me up no end! Thank you

Cheers fella! As said, a cracking read and I'm learning a lot which is useful as I've got a 91 tucked up in a barn that needs work and an engine dropping in

Some more progress towards the MOT this week. Various service items arrived so that was first on the agenda. I'm not moaning at all, but tracking down coolant during the Coronavirus has been pretty funny . The first batch was from an Audi dealership on Ebay who sent one bottle (I ordered 2) before the lockdown hit and everything closed so no chance of getting the second any time soon. The second lot came from Eurocarparts, took 2 weeks to arrive (again completely understandable) but when it did it was the wrong stuff haha. Third time lucky I managed to get hold of 5L of pre-mixed G13 from Ebay again. Happy days. Oil, filter, plugs and a magnetic sump plug also on the list: NGK plugs were pretty coked up from a lot of short starts over the past couple of years. They'd clean up ok but I swapped some new ones in. Went around and replaced a load of the bulbs including the indicator one I dropped Magnetic sump plug: Access is quite tight for a filter change these days due to the twin fan rad and oil cooler pipes. A Mk2 filter still fits but to make my life easier I've switched to a Lupo GTI filter. It's slightly shorter which helps with clearance. Back on 4 wheels and dragged out of its slumber!: Fired straight up F*cking loud as the exhaust is only loosely bolted up until I get the lamdba bung welded in! In dire need of a clean and polish (if anything to stop the GF's graffiti on it )! Still waiting on some bolts to finish putting the seats in properly but the drivers one is there. With my frames, they seem to tilt slightly inwards (so the tops aren't level) but hoping that won't be an issue. I may also take a grey fabric pen to the white Corbeau logo to tone it down a bit. A little Fast and Furious for my tastes! I'm really loving the new OEM style backbox! Sorted a few knackered door gaskets whilst it was outside and I could open the door fully. I need to get some paint to blow the bottom of the door in (it had a hinge replacement which need welding a while back). Last but not least, epoxied up the tank straps. They are stainless but the 'bling' factor was not for me: So, I need to get the lambda bungs welded in and source a donut gasket for the downpipe. On the subject of exhausts, I'm curious for any advice regarding assembly paste on a stainless system? I've read about using silicon rather than exhaust paste? Any recommendations for exhaust clamps too - I've been using Mikalor ones but they don't seem to clamp tight enough...

Just read the whole thread! Great write up!
I have a Tornado Red 16v which is developing rust in similar places to yours was. It was good to see how they should be repaired.
I like the 'clubsport' theme you have gone with. I am tempted to leave my rear seats out as well and just make a lightweight false floor to make it look neater. I'll see what it looks like when I have the carpet back in.
Can I ask where you got your tank straps from?

Love the updates Can I ask two questions please: 1. What steering wheel is that? 2. More pix please? 3. Does the trumpet on the airbox make much of a difference? 4. Where did you get it? Ok, so that might be slightly more than 2...

Ok, so that might be slightly more than 2... haha, no worries! If I can help at all just shout! The steering wheel is a Renown 130R. Got a few wheels I swap in and out of the car but this is my favourite The trumpet is a subwoofer speaker cone bonded in. I gutted anything restrictive inside. As for whether it makes any difference... marginal to be honest? The airbox is from the Ibiza GTI donor so doesn't fit the Golf perfectly - the cone just creates a smoother opening as well as looking more 'finished' than the stock plastic Ibiza specific cowling that was attached before. A Golf GTD one would be perfect but I refuse to pay the scene tax! Not a huge amount of progress recently due to trying to control this new member in the household! She's the best pain in the one could hope for...seems to have a penchant for robbing screwdrivers from the garage I did manage to clean the car yesterday and spent a few hours washing, claying and machine polishing it. I am by no means a detailer, and for the record, I don't particularly enjoy cleaning cars. I do however believe in putting the work in so it keeps it looking nicer for longer hence this selection of products that cost a small fortune. I'll post up some finished pics once it's done.

Shiney. I'm like you, no detailer but realise the correct products and process will give you great results that last, even if it eats a whole day up.
Pup looks awesome.

This time I'm dabbling with entry-level ceramic coatings rather than wax. I did the wheels the other week - the Ronals are such a pain to clean especially with dusty high friction pads fitted, that if I can just hose of brake dust etc I'll be on to a winner! Thanks, yeah she's awesome. I don't have kids yet but I can imagine the lack of sleep and constant 'ON' mode are on a similar par. Now if I could only train her to find the elusive 10mm ...

Ceramic coatings are brilliant. They can last up to a year, well the one i did.
I've gone for two coats of polish and 3 layers of sealant on the wheels.
Yep, have a child and you'll experience a whole new level of "on-ness" like never before. Definitely worth it though.

Had the lambda bungs welded in yesterday. Not the best job in the world but for 20 quid can't complain. One for the Lambda sensor and one for a future AFR gauge when the car gets supercharged or ITBs. Blanked off for now. All of which means I can now finally button up the exhaust for final fit. I've not used a flexi like this before and this may be a stupid question... but there should be a donut gasket in here right? Manifold didn't come with one so will need to find something suitable.
