been there! busted my record no.24, it was my own fault i was pressing bearings and didn't notice the spacers had shifted so i was basically trying to squash solid steel, it went off like a bomb. that said, they were common on ebay second hand, if in good condtion and not abused it will be better quality than a modern (irwin-record) vice

153 pages of vice porn, I got to page 10, bookmarked it for another visit. I had no idea there were so many different and specialised vices.

Darren how on earth did you break that, I know how much force I put through my old no3 to break it, it is a sad sight.

I broke a 8” paramo clean In half a few years back.took the back jaw clean off. I was standing on the bench swinging a 20lb sledge over my head to ‘persuade’ a particularly stubborn kingpin mind 😬

Thats the trouble with good vices, they do tougher and tougher jobs, we get stupider and stupider with scaffold tubes and sledge hammers, then bang! "Oh my vice broke"

I have a few vices but the one i use the most is a record auto vice 74, Not a big vice but it has a few nice features such as holding valves a pipe grip and a small anvil to hammer bits on, and it swivels.

I picked up a Record No25 for 20 quid off ebay. It'd been left for dead, poor thing. Before then it'd been used by someone welding alot, it was in a right state. Few hours cleaning it up, and some new jaws, and it's good to go

Darren how on earth did you break that, I know how much force I put through my old no3 to break it, it is a sad sight. i don't have the figures to hand but i had a 3 foot length of exhaust tube over the handle and when it broke it launched me into the tool chest! also, when the "new" old no.24 arrived from ebay i finished the job the same way lol here it is next to a vintage record no.1 i found in uncles shed. to give an idea of the scale, the no.1 is about the same size as a 2lb pack of sugar

I ended up buying a new Irwin Record no.3 4" swivel vice, the decision was made by the fact I got it for a really good price. It is the same number and jaw width as my old no3 I broke but does not look as strong and next to the Parkinson looks quite feeble. I was waiting for the right vice on ebay but to many people listing old vices in very poor condition for more than the price of new. I know the much older ones are better quality but by the time you replace the jaws and clean it up it was difficult to justify. Good news is I can get to work on the Parkinson restoration.

Yes I know what you mean, despite the new buy I am still on the look out for another "just in case vice"

i think my vice might have survived if the bottom jaw was not overhanging the bench so much. but i mounted it like that on purpose because it irritates me when the handle is jammed up against the bench, and the vice/bench itself obscures its use
all conjecture of course, i was using it outside its capacity, as well as the un-intentional human error.

Cant add pics for some reason but i have a record 112. 6" jaws engineers vice. Big and heavy, ductile iron rather than grey iron and sold as unbreakable!
Paid £40 for it from an autojumble, best part of £1000 new iirc!

I’ve never actually seen another apart from the one I’ve got, yours is the second!

Be secure in the knowledge you can put stuff in/on them and batter the hell out of it with club hammers and it wont break The early ones have a rounded end on the handle end of the leadscrew. I think they were top of the record range, only surpassed by the 114 which is the same but a little larger. No idea why i cant post pics anymore, it used to work. Pics of it on page 6 of my bedford build thread, although you already know what they look like 😀 I had to carry mine through newark autojumble and across the car park. Nearly killed me! Whats happened to the anvil section on yours?

Yeah this one has had some stick over the years, both from me and my grandad who I inherited it from. It was a plant fitters vice for around 50 years before I got it.
I found it really difficult to get new jaws for, very few record vices have external bolt jaws like these. The old ones were so worn they didn’t really grip anymore, and definately weren’t square. Meant you were having to ridiculously over-tighten it to grip stuff. Found a guy in shefflied via eBay who is making them though, correctly hardened. Well worth the money to rejaw it over replacing it with something inferior. I think they were about 60 quid delivered.
The anvil is weld buildup from many years of him sparking the arc welder off it to clean the electrode. I left it when I refurbed the rest for sentimental reasons. It’s never been usable as an anvil in the 20odd years I’ve known it so I don’t miss it.
