This caught the wave of logistics all the way through the postal system. Very surprised to see it here. It was sent Saturday from Colorado (for equivalence, that's further than Rome is from Birmingham). For $3. A couple of the other pieces haven't made it to the post office yet. Phil

Did a little work on the radio after work tonight. The chassis tang broke off the center lug connector when I went to bend it down to the chassis. That sucked, so I pulled the socket apart and made a new lug end. Something that to the chassis first with my gas torch then bent it down and soldered it to the remains of the lug with my iron so as not to burn the phenolic. Reassembled, wired up and tested with a 9v square pp3 battery. Output pegs my meter off the scale set to 1500 VAC so I say it works still. Phil

Spent tonight dissecting the volume and tone control circuit. Discovered that this set has automatic loudness compensation- what the LOUDNESS button on a HiFi does. Boosts bass and treble at low volume to account for your hearing curve.
That's pretty sharp for a car radio

I need to get some screws and make a set of standoffs for the Bluetooth board. There's enough space for it down by the volume control; ideal place as that's where it needs to inject signal and there's switched power right there.
I think I will probably need to get an external antenna for the board (it has a socket) because the metal case will be pretty good at keeping the Bluetooth isolated...

Just had a look on Earth where you live. An airboat would have been just as appropriate! It's a tad watery down your way.

I have an elderly Ferranti transistor portable that still just about works, aside from the fact that there's nothing on LW or MW to listen to any more. I've just splashed out a whole tenner on an ebay special bluetooth receiver and amplifier to see if I can graft it in, along with a new speaker, and have it working in a more modern style.

Shame. Here, MW is still very much alive and in use with some halfway decent programming. LW was never a thing.

14C5 power output tubes arrived. The rest of the parts that I need to actually start are still in New Orleans. Maybe they'll arrive tomorrow. Phil

That is impressive. Does the hum die down as the unit warms, or is it always in the background?

That buzz is persistent; it's how it makes the high voltage. A little bleeds over into the speaker but it is quiet- even more quiet with the rebuilt filter cap with bigger caps now.

I was going to ask how many different type of tubes there are, then, how long do they last, but then I was wondering "how do they work and what do they do?". This would be a grossly unfair question(s) for me to ask, so I'll go look at Wikipedia and report back once I've learned a little ...
Here's a better question: how did you get interested in electronics and was it an interest/education you got as a hobby, or all learned in school?
Best, John
