I’m the guy who spends £100 on a quality tool to do a job that I could have paid a garage to do for £100, but knowing that for next time I have a similar job to do, it’ll be easier & quick. That approach has worked well for 25+ years, and I’ve built up a fair collection of tools! Current wish list includes slip rollers, an anvil, heel bars and a mill!
To Phil, this thread has become my daily check-in to see how you’re getting on with this great project, keep it up!
I’m about to start on a minor overhaul / weld-up project on my recently purchased cheap 2003 XKR, but it might be too modern for RR?

Whereabouts are you, I may have a spare anvil coming up...

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

Cleaned and painted. Currently not getting all dirty after work because evening stuff to do, hence itty bitty stuff- I spent more time cleaning the workshop. It all takes time, all needs to be done, hopefully next time that's gotta come off it won't be a fight. Considering that's meant to be adjusted every 3000 miles, it needs to be kept well. Phil

Well, there's something interesting. Driving home tonight I said to the wife that I was contemplating loading the Chieftain up with sound deadening and good seals and having it a really quiet, comfortable ride.
She said to heck with that, it would be much better if it could lay frame.
Sometimes my wife genuinely surprises me.
Now I'm wondering if it actually can drop that low....

Phil I prefer your idea to hers, but at least you know she’s into the car properly, not just humouring you. 😃

New condenser. Still a bit hiccuppy so points it is. Good to have a spare in the car though. We left off here last time; car up in the air cocking a leg. Less than inspiring, but I decided today I needed to make an effort to do something constructive on the car, so made a start on taking the brakes apart. Contents of the dust cap did not provoke confidence. Cleaned that up to find previous keeper was a complete pillock and had bent the split pin for the hub nut over into the sweep radius of the grease scraper, breaking it. Found several bits of bronze inside. The rest are probably on the other side of the bearing. Race itself was fine, if not dirty. Scrub scrub scrub. Inspection shows the parts to still be good. Wiggled the drum off. Grease had been overloaded and gotten past the seal. Shoes are slightly contaminated. Going to clean that off with solvent and heat. The rest needs a jolly good clean. Face mask ahoy! Phil

Boil shoes in washing powder/liquid for 20 mins, that usually works well.

Boil shoes in washing powder/liquid for 20 mins, that usually works well. I'll pull them off and give that a try. I've got a burner on the barbeque, I'll go get a cheap pot from the charity shop or something. Phil

I use the wife's saucepans Just put in dishwasher afterwards Having said that, dishwasher would probably clean the shoes as well

Or aluminum foil container from #8 Lunch Special Beef with Broccoli and Pork Fried Rice, or in your neck of the woods, Crawdads with Bayou Seasoning?
Can your points/dwell be adjusted in situ with a hex key, like later GM/Delco dsitributors? I always regarded that as rather clever/mechanic-friendly.

John Sadly no, these are the older type that you gotta undo the screw and tweak, set, curse at, tighten down undo, readjust, tighten down, etc Phil

Do you have the option of converting to Pertronix or whichever makes are available over there to lose the points & condenser?

Do you have the option of converting to Pertronix or whichever makes are available over there to lose the points & condenser? There's always the option, it's a really standard setup. However, I got the offer of the twin points setup so I went for that. Phil

While waiting I beat the grease cap back into something resembling the correct shape and painted it black. Meantime, brake soup resembles Deepwater Horizon. Phil

Meantime, brake soup resembles Deepwater Horizon. Phil Mmmm. Did anyone say asbestos soup? Side note, drove over to Bethlehem Pennsylvania today, local gent pointed out the now flattened ex-HQ of Bethlehem Steel. Said the cost of remediation of the asbestos was too high, so they demolished the building with explosives. So now totally safe obviously.
