Loom taped up and clamped in. It all fits, which is good. Also pulled the hood release cable out and freed it up some; ideally it needs replacing but at least it moves now. Sorted the choke mechanism on the carburetor also. It'll need a bit of adjustment but it's better. Found the part number on the alternator. It's a remanufactured Delco 10SI, 63 amp. I did wire up the light and it wouldn't go out when I tried. The regulator pack may be toast. Joy. Phil

Oh, and for now because shiny, I'm not going to paint the alternator.
Because shiny.

Is the exciter wire fitted? it wont charge without that wired.

It is; it's a 3-wire model with B+ big nut terminal and that's currently hardwired to the starter motor, a good ground, then Molex connector with terminals 1 and 2- 1 is warning light (5W sidelight bulb) and 2 is volts drop sense which is connected to the B+ lug.
The voltage does rise but but to a great extent. I'd expect it to ride up and hold at 14.4 at high revs and it doesn't. The light also does not go out which is a sign the rectifier pack or voltage regulator are faulty.

Tidied the loom up a little and fought with the (starting to get brittle) rubber pipework that connects the fresh air vent to outside. It's dark and still 28c outside so I stopped for tonight. Muggy warm. That and I had run the engine to check the gearbox from idle (changes gear still) and I stink of rich exhaust. Also the alternator light doesn't go out at all so that's kippered. I guess another thing to check. Fun times but one step closer to putting the engine back in. Phil

Also I've noticed over time that the gloss black and semi-gloss black paint has reacted with the Kurust in odd ways. Not happy about that.

Did you scrub the Kurust off before painting? You can't paint straight over it as it's not a good base. It has to be sanded/scotchbrite'd back first.

I did but it's gone in the areas where it was rusty so I'm guessing in the pits where it was leftover it reacted
You can see where the metal was good on the inner wing and where the bit towards the back was rusty it's gone all funny, there's some areas where it is perfectly fine and nice and smooth/shiny (bearing in mind that's semi-gloss black on the inner wing so it'll never be totally gloss).
I can go over it again no worries but it's a pfaff.

The whole thing needs new paint so I might just. If it annoys me sufficiently I can redo it.
Gah, I sound lazy!
Oh, one thing on the timing advance- the choke was set too far so I backed it off. It was lumpy because it was pig rich. Making it a little more lean solved the problem. (The Carter Climatic Control dials round a bit to alter where the choke is at what temperature. Ambient 30C does not need to be fully closed...)

Item 1: Set valves. Check. Item 2: Prepare for reassembly. I need to get 6 bolts, washers and nuts for the rear cradle then it can go in.

I don't suppose you have a spare one? Friend needs an engine for his, but thought it is a 5.3 ?

I don't have a spare. Is his a Buick? Their early 50's Fireball was 5.2 liters.

Ooh. Pretty!
At this juncture I'd just end up doing a core exchange, 10si alternators are common and moderately cheap.
I don't think the deltas are bad, because the thing does come up in voltage. It has all the hallmarks of a failed diode.
