Don't get me wrong, stalks have their place. I just remember when floor mounted disappeared, every manufacturer seemed to have a different method, pull back to dip, pull again to main, Push forward for main, pull back for dip, and so on.
The pedal was just so much more intuitive.
Sorry Phil. Don't mean to hijack.

I'm going to paint it black and then clean the surfaces back off silver again. The whole gearbox is getting a fresh coat of paint as well.

Did a calculation. It's already over-engineered so the gearbox got lifted up with the crane onto the table. Crane legs go either side of it, as designed. Looking at the torus, it's going to have to come off, but it looks like that requires a special tool. The special tool list of about 3 pages of the manual. Joy. Phil

Just ordered the 1951 Pontiac Hydra-Matic Service Manual. It's a bit grubby but appears intact. eBay still has its' uses.

Anyone know why someone thought getting rid of the floor mounted dip switch was a good idea? I, for one, definitely prefer them to stalk mounted ones. My friend Allan from South Carolina came up with this answer after we discussed it the other night. It seems that 'Muricans only have one operative foot for in driving mode for gas/brake while the other foot has little synaptical connection to higher brain functions except to tap along to country music so the default for foot mounted switches was to leave in them in high beam and problem solved. This is also why driving stick is considered by some to be rocket science.

Would have been fine. The headlights were wired up wrong anyway. Would have made people get out of the way as the brights alternated from side to side like a police car.

The headlight connectors were all in pieces. New ones are available, but at $25 each, where's the fun in paying for that? That's all that's left of the old insulation. Start with a random piece of brown plastic. Chop it up and drill the required number of holes in it. Trim to length. File the notches that stop the connectors rotating. Clean up and add the connectors. Attach to car. Tomorrow, need to make another one the same for the other side. Phil

Not necessarily. They're mounted in a moderately exposed location, so they may be rusted away to nothing in some cases.
