My dad had an electric one in parallel with the engine mounted one on his scimitar, his aim was to imorove starting but he found it worked well when the engine was running as well (he kept both as he had a distrust of anything electronic). Yeah, same principle applies here. Put a tee in at the manifold and set the idle mixture and speed, and tweaked the timing a touch to match. Runs better now. Doesn't pop and bang on overrun either. Here's food for thought.
I was taught that, in general, if everything else is in good working order, setting the ignition timing at idle for just before the peak rising side of engine RPM is a good baseline for getting the timing correct for best performance.
Any truth in that claim?

I had a thought. What does a dynamometer do? Well, it loads the engine up against the wheels.
Ok, so being as I have an automatic gearbox with a fluid coupling, I can do the same to a degree. So, with the stall speed of the fluid coupling known (approx 1500rpm) I had my wife hard on the brakes then flat to the floor on the gas. I then quickly adjusted the ignition for peak RPM and had her shut things off- no more than 5 seconds of that against the gearbox, all that engine power going into heating the fluid up.
Went for a test drive and it's not bad. I think it needs to come back ever so slightly because peak torque is meant to be 2200 rpm not 1500 so that's something for another day.
Right now it's got some serious get up and go compared to how it was before.
I even had it up to 60 (per GPS!).

Parked the car in the garage because we're due rain. Sitting down and now trying to relax. It reminded me that after all that I need to set the points, which will cock up the timing again. Oh well. Phil

A moment of impetus tonight. I pulled the screen wash pickle jar out of the car again because the last time I went to use it the damn thing didn't work. I had a go at pumping the piston up and down in the bore; it never sealed well and with my finger over the pipe it would hiss- with a little resistance but it would still move. Taken apart, the source of the hiss was found. This washer has disintegrated, and it is actually meant to form a seal on the top of the case around one of the fixings for the repeat valve. Rummaged about, and found something suitable. The end of the rubber nozzle on my air line blow gun. Filed flat and sanded smooth, fit onto there it forms a good seal. So much so the piston cannot be drawn down with the pipe blocked now. Reassembled. Net result? Working screen wash again. Happy about that. Phil

Didn't feel like cooking tonight. Went out to get Chinese; tune up seems to be good because local driving fuel economy has increased to nearly 14mpg, which is close to book figures. That's not bad Phil

Car started running like a bag of smashed cr@p this afternoon. Much worse under acceleration; know what that means. Pop the distributor cap off, leading set of points had closed up again.
Set that by eye, off on the road again.
