Managed a bit more around the inconvenience of having to attend work... With the distribution panel fitted, and the paint cured enough to be able to manhandle things, I could bolt th vice on and then drop the cabinet into place. Its got a lip along both sides at the top, which is how it is meant to hang on the side of a rollcab; I’d mounted the panel at the right height to hook this lip over. With that snugged into its permanent home I could fit the shelf bracket and shelf, which pulled down nice and flat despite the weld induced warpage. I then had a bit of a trial fit up of the kit I want on there, and worked out where best to put stuff. The only thing that’s “permanent” is that the welder will live on the top shelf. The propane bottle fits nicely next to it, but could get relocated elsewhere if I do end up needing the space for an AC/DC TIG. I then stuck a few hooks around the frame to hold the assorted cables... I still have to do the wiring on the distribution board, and make a couple of revision to the workshop wiring to relocate the 32A socket and incorporate an isolator for it, but I think we’re nearly there. One thing I do still need to make though, is some form of handle/handles for the end with the vice, as it’s bloody heavy with all the kit on it. I have a plan... 😀

Thanks George. 👍
Yes, I’m pleased with how it turned out. Another collection of squirrelled “junk” finally recycled into something useful. I need to try very hard to keep it organised though. My biggest flaw is that I work in a sea of chaos. The whole point of making this, aside from putting all the welding stuff together, finally, is to have somewhere safe to do hot work. Resisting the temptation to simply use it as another flat surface to pile junk on will be a challenge. 🤣

Got the sockets all connected on the distribution board. Bit of a faff wrestling cable through the conduit, but it does make a neat job. Also revised the power outlets on the corner of the garage. Moved the 32a and 16a outlets up above the three pin ones instead of below, and put an isolator switch in the feed to the 32. Also put in a fused outlet to hard-wire the big battery charger rather than taking up a plug socket. The lens distortion on the camera, combined with the uneven brickwork, makes the sockets look more wonky than they actually are. Honest. 🤣 Had a sweep up and parked the new bench in the corner where it’ll live from now on, and hooked it up. Pleased with that. 😀 Then took the opportunity to stick up some decorations. I have some unexpected time off due to “track and trace”, so will be in the garage as much as possible as my wife is working from home and I need to keep out of her way.

That battery charger is a thing of wonder and beauty! There is a place near to me with something similar. When I went in for something, they had seven batteries hooked up to it at once. It was making an interesting buzzing noise and I was glad to leave.

It’s a proper old fashioned one, made by Westinghouse. I’d guess 1950s. It doesn’t charge at any great rate, only about 1.5 amps (although it rated at 3 I’ve never seen the needle go that high) but if a battery has any chance whatsoever of recovering, then it’ll bring it back from the dead in a way that modern “clever” ones just don’t seem to be able to do. I pulled it out of a skip at the Royal Arsenal in Woolwich when I was an apprentice, in 1988.

A bit of research, prompted by idle curiosity, suggests that it was made in or before 1935, as that was when the “& Saxby” got dropped from the company name. 😃

If we're doing old switchgear and stuff... Taken inside a Melbourne Tram substation in 2008 or 9. When I took the mercury arc rectifier, a vehicle was leaving the adjacent station onto an uphill grade.

Smashing. I love stuff like that ^^^ Are they working? The more modern one is (1949 or so) the earlier one I’ve never tried. I suspect the rectifier might not be up to it. I’ve got about 40 Davenset chargers, my old man worked for them from when he started as an apprentice in 1946 to when he died in 1978. Thinking about it, Westinghouse bought Davenset in around 1976 when the founder sold up.

They are indeed. It has occurred to me that mine might benefit from a bit of a strip and clean, as well as a check inside. I knew it was far from new when I acquired it thirty five years ago, but it's a bit of a jolt (forgive the pun) to realise that it's at least 85 years old. I should possibly stop leaving it hooked up to batteries unattended until I've checked it out properly!

Thank you consul315 that’s nice of you to say. I’ve too much on the go really, like a lot of us, and I’m constantly trying not to take on anything else… without much success. 🤣

I've now found I'm in the situation of knowing I have a part I need, but it's easier to buy another one than find the one I already have.... Some great work there glenanderson, maybe I should look at organising the stuff I have like that, but I'd probably end up with several 🙄

I have just taken on another motorcycle. I know, I know, practice what you preach. My excuse is it was too cheap to pass up. It’s a family bike too; it has been in bits for decades, and I’ve had my eye on it for at least ten years. One of these, not this one, but one like it. A Triumph T25SS. One of BSA/Triumph’s swansong models, and only built for the 1971 model year; September ‘70 to August ‘71 when they were discontinued. This one was registered 1st August 1971, so one of the last of the 250s to be built.
