As with anything aesthetic, it's subjective. One man's meat...
I have always liked that caddyvan
Any guides our videos on creating patina? Then it would just be up to the owner as to how much is right for them

With regard to clearcoating, I'm fairly sure you can get matt clearcoat

horses for courses I suppose. My '64 Chevy was faux patina, but i thought it was fairly subtle and in keeping with the truck......... I think you can really only judge the the whole 'fake patina' thing on an individual car basis - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. My Chevy was painted like that in the States before I bought it, but my decision to buy it was based on wanting a rock solid C-10 which was up and together mechanically as well so that I could enjoy straight away, not on the airbrush enhanced paint job. (not having a dig at my 2 mates on here who have similar trucks and are still half way through 2 year rebuilds ) Like everything with cars - I'm glad we don't all like / dislike the same thing or retro cars would soon get really boring.....

In a nutshell. ==== Personally what I like about this place is there's stuff to like and stuff to dislike for each of us. But in general there is an overarching respect for everyone's projects and interests.

Re the clear coating, I asked a guy at a show about this. His reply was that it was so that he could wash it, not much fun dragging a wash mitt over rust.

It does look a bit strange though, glossy rust. Do they not do a matte clearcoat at all? Although, I guess that would mean all the paint would end up with a matte finish which might be equally unattrarctive.

Satin or matt would be more suitable than gloss. To a certain extent most of these type of cars have an 'uncared' for look about them, not shiney blingy polished.

Tbh, I don't know why I got involved in this thread, I'll never get a patina'd (patinated?) car passed the wife!

There's a VW beetle (one of the newer one's) that has been given this rusty look treatment, which is fine, except the front wings and bumpers are made of plastic. Looks ok though.

Faux Patina, no not for me. I haven't seen a car that came up ok. But I agree with reliantreviver "but that someone has gone to the effort to replicate "the look" deserves credit alone". Maybe not my cuppa but each to their own. It's good we all like and love different things.
Cheers

Sorry for OffTopic, but disasterbus: did someone chop your truck bed? Looks too short somehow?!

Sorry for OffTopic, but disasterbus: did someone chop your truck bed? Looks too short somehow?! Maybe just the angle of the photo? Its a standard short bed stop side - they do a longer version too, but I like the short ones.

Don't really get the "faux" patina I've seen the good and bad but if you can tell it's not real then it's not working Clear coat over an original patina is just lazy if you've gone to the trouble of buying a original motor then put the work in to keep it that way because once you've lacquered over it it's no longer original patina and it won't age anymore Whist it's not my thing I can appreciate an original patina This is mine when I bought it Totally original And I've spent the last two years bashing dents out and trying to get it straight ready to paint in a nice shiny colour It's just not my thing but I can see why others would like it But there is one thing about patina that does bugs me I spent a lot of my free time on eBay looking at old cars and old yanks and it would seem a vehicle with a real or fake patina Is now priced similar to or ever priced higher than a good version of the same motor It's like a "patina TAX" Why would you pay 10k for a rusty 70s Chevy pickup when you can buy a nice one for 12k

Why would you pay 10k for a rusty 70s Chevy pickup when you can buy a nice one for 12k I'd rather a patinated original paint vehicle than a shiny respray over inches of filler. At least you know what you are buying.

Its all about the execution, genuine patina tells the tale of a cars history like my wrinkles and scars reflect my own. Trying to replicate 50 years of California sun on an 8 year VW however seems bit contradictory, but their car, their style and if it makes the owner smile then good for them
A well delivered faux paint job doesn't offend me BUT...rust paint on plastic bumpers and fibreglass bumpers is just daft. I can appreciate the skill to apply the paint well, but at least keep it representative of real fade/rust.

I have spent years removing patina off old cars to make them look good, to get a good car and make it look bad baffles me, but whatever floats your boat. Your car, your rules.

At least you know what you are buying. But your referring to originality And I'm fine with that At the beginning of this thread there was a Ferrari what you see is what you get etc now I would class that as a survivor not patina and yes if I was to but a car like that I would leave it as it is but that don't answer the question of why would you try to make it look ruff if it was ok in the first place secondly making or keeping it that way will only reduce its life my bus has spent 40+ years sitting in an Arizona desert so it has a lovely patina but I live in a damp rainy England the paint in places has faded to a rusty metal so if I don't do anything with that how long will it last in this country? around the front screen under the window rubber that rust had become porous only a couple of pin holes but they would allow water to get inside creating more rust later in life and another thing I noticed with my bus was all the years of sand build up in the chassis legs and out Riggers now had I not chosen to fully restore this I wouldn't have noticed it and over time it would have got wet and stayed wet slowly but surely rusting from the inside out so to recap in my view originality is good an original patina (like faded paint) is ok as long as it isn't going to shorten the life of a classic vehicle fake or encouraged patina is not good

Its like 'distressed' look furniture. Its a fashion thing. Genuine patina will give it the 'distressed' look, and I can sort of understand people paying for it, but taking a perfectly good piece and messing it up for the sake of fashion, for someone to pay extra for it. Meh..
