Although they haven't been told it's part of their job (yet), the DVLA proposals include getting MOT testers to look out for undeclared changes to a vehicle at the time of the MOT and report it to the relevant department. As Alistair has shown, there are some busy-bodies in action already!
The Zodiac must have had a few more modifications than that though because an engine and axle change wouldn't be enough for the car to lose its identity (only losing three points out of an allowance of eight). If he'd modified the chassis (four bar set-up maybe) then that's a different matter.

front struts, brakes, etc. so effectively no original running gear. Sad thing is, the way the story was related to me, the tester knew what he was looking at 'oh look, thats a 9" Ford rear axle' etc...

So this is a new set of regs 'coming in' as it were then? Or ones already there being enforced more strictly...... Whats this points thing about? And also, surely this means all those Mk1 escorts out there converted to a 4 link rear suspension / coilovers (with the weld in rear towers) etc would also fall foul? This is sucking if true.

The regs are already in force and have been since 1997. Whatis happening is a tightening up of them to stop people who are taking the pish, like people who run 1990's Landrovers on a S2 log book to get free road tax.
I don;t think theres any real suggestion that 4 linking an axle will send you to SVA/Q-plate hell, but take a regular Escort Mk1 and go with new strusts, world cup crossmember, AVO style wings and inners, Baby Atlas, enlarged tunnel, 4 link, coilovers, pinto or cossie conversion - no chance....
If the DVLA really wwant modified carsa off the road as has been suggested all they need to do is get a load of back issues of the various mags and send some prohibition notices out....

Yeah the very modified escorts was what I was thinking as an example, even if I only mentioned the axle. Surely welding in new mounting points classes as modifying the monocoque tho? Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanyways. This all sounds too complex to me, so Ill just stick with a normal (boooo) exhaust out the back.

theres no laws at all, certainly not MOT wise anyway, about where an exhaust can or cant exit. even if a modified exhaust is noisy as fook, the wording states that- 'assess subjectively the effectiveness of the silencer in reducing exhaust noise to a level considered to be average for the vehicle.' which is wide open to interpretation, but technically, they cant compare it to a stock vehicle, they have to compare it to another vehicle the same as yours (and your vehicle could be, for example, a ford pop with a 5L v8)with a similar modified exhaust- and where are they gunna find one of those? basically, as long as the mounts are secure (and hold the exhaust off the bottom of the car+ any suspension parts), and it doesnt have a leak in it thats more than a pinhole, its a pass. So if i was to put an exhaust on my car that had hollowed out mids and a normal backbox then it might pass? The exhaust currently on my car is peppered in holes & the other one is my only spare!! Sounds much better than standard without being excessively noisy!

Think it was on the 3rd different system i'd put on it by the time you bought it!!

LOL hello chap. Yes still going a long Put my lowering springs and dampers on as the GSi units had started to weep quite a lot! And the exhaust has been getting progressively worse! Think I'm gonna take it off and replace the mid boxes with straight pipe LOL and repair any other damage I can find. The downpipe needs modification too as its the lowest part of the car LOL
