Hey lads and lasses,
New to the forums but have for a long time been interested in retro and classical cars (Imps at the mo ;D) First got into retros when dad braught a 1989 Hyundai Stellar pretty knarkard for some farm work. I have come to really like the cars looks, interior etc and think that it would be worth saving, especialy since I spoke to one bloke who rekons that there are less than 200 of these rare cars left in the whole UK. I've tried to do some reserch on them but either nobodys ever heard of them or if they had they know nout about them.
Just wondering if anybody ever owned/knows anything/has a Hyundai Steller.
Might try to get some picks up of the old gal if i can.
Any help appreciated, cheers.

Hey there, welcome aboard.
There's a Stellar around my way that I'm always seeing driving about. I think it used to belong to the bloke who lived opposite me. I'm guessing it's one of the last one's as its' on a J plate (so probably a 91 I'm guessing).
Next time I see it I'll have to track the owner down.

Hi GJM, Hyundai Stellar! Could look cool. There's plenty of people here who will tell you what wheels fit it etc., Gotta slam it though.
You're right. Info is a bit sparse. Someone here will find a pic or two though.

At the time, I thought Stella's were a load of old poo, driven by doddering gits or used as minicabs. Why anyone would have bought one was a bit beyond me - A second-hand cortina would have done the same job for less money. Squint a bit and it could almost be a Mk5 Corty. Now, with the benefit of hindsight I recon it could be made into an ultra-cool, ultra-rare cruiser, kind of along the lines of Rmad's Cressy.... PIC!!! ANOTHER PIC!!! (Note to p-shopper's: get busy! ;D

Stellar's seem to be all but extinct now. I never thought they were a bad looking motor at the time. I remember my mum driving one as a Taxi and it was one of the most reliable cars they had. It was quite plush inside too.
Coincidentally I am building a 1/24 scale model kit of a Hyundai Stellar! Slammed with some nice rims on it of course;D The kit is made by Academy (minicraft) if you fancy tracking one down.

Based on the 77 Colt. Engine closer to the FWD. Early production had serious problems with the electrics. Body by Guigaro, modified in house. Hyundai thought the original looked a little to much like the Audi. Droppable, stick a later Mitsu engine in it. (Used to know the local service manager. RAF(ret.) what?)

I personaly like the looks of the car, we've got a lovely red one, nice hard lines, looks strong and heavy and great in red. The interior is amazing aswel, seats are like couches, dash is nicly set out and for its age is filled with mod cons (one guy i talked to who had one said he felt it was a poor mans rolls ) with full electrics etc, rear headrests, rear bins all all that kind of stuff aswel as a hice high center console and high gear stick (could almost change gears with ya little finger the box feels great). Thus I like the car (yes aswel as Imps, the Stiletto especialy ;D) However the one we've got is now a non runner being eaten by the rust monster. Does run well but something seems to be draining the battery or it earthing somewhere. I'm certainly no mechanic or electrician so anybody got any ideas how to fix this first problem of many.

New to the forums but have for a long time been interested in retro and classical cars (Imps at the mo ;D) Don't worry, a few months of therapy will sort your Imp fixation right out, you're lucky to have spotted it so soon, most of us Imp owners are too far gone to be helped! ;D ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, welcome to the board, and the Stellar sounds great, looking forward to the pics!

I'm coming around to the whole Hyundai thing! I like the Stellar but they do seem to have disappeared in recent years! If my Pony is anthing to go by they all turned into big flaky piles of rust - mines only 13 years old and it's holier than the Pope!!! ;D Would make a great project though - with all the money you'd save buying the Stellar you could use it to make it go faster!

I would absolutly love to restore it and make it a lil fatser (its a 1.6 GSL, something like 85bhp and 100mph max ) and after driving it around the fields (baught for dads farm use) it is pretty damn slow. Many people that wrote old reviews about them commented on how you press the accelerator hard it actualy slows down. However I love the looks and interior of the car and want to resotre it. I am however a student and have very little money. Plus atmo its a non starter (something to do with battery draining) and had rotten front wings, rest is pretty good. So anybody got any ideas why the battery would be draining ? Earthing somewhere, something draining all the power ?

Could be. Have you tried changing the battery yet. Might be that it's just caned and can't hold it's charge anymore.

nah it did it a while ago so we changed the battery so the one thats in it now is pretty much new. Is there any way of finding out if it is earthing or somethings draining it? (Going to hook the Orion to it on the weekend and charge it up, get it running and nice and warm then when i turn it off disconnect the battery for now so with some luck will run again when i get back to it)

Just taken some pictures of the Stellar for ya, try to turn the non believers in its good looks ;D Not had time to investigate into its non starting, still think its something to do with the battery being drained/earthed. don't really know what to do about it tho since i don't yet know all that much about mechanics I think i need to buy a propor battery charger and stick it on over night and see what happens. Appart from that its pretty ok. Lots of small patches of rust on the body however i can only see one bit on a sill that would need welding, the rest is filler and re sprey. Needs a new driver door since thats rusted to curse word. The bushes will need replacing, new tyres and the thing pumps out smoke like you would not believe!! Also sounds like a bomber plane when running, can hear it a mile off so don't know whats wrong with it there Anyway, shall just have to see if i can get it running and find somewhere with panels (cant find anywhere) and see what I can do. Unless somebody in the north west would like to come over and take a look sometime and help a newbee? ;D ;D ;D xs8.xs.to/pics/04523/Img_0139.jpgxs8.xs.to/pics/04523/Img_0135.jpgxs8.xs.to/pics/04523/Img_0134.jpgxs8.xs.to/pics/04523/Img_0133.jpgxs8.xs.to/pics/04523/Img_0138.jpgxs8.xs.to/pics/04523/Img_0137.jpg
