Tinkering with the White G21 must have had some sort of subliminal effect on me because - yes you guessed it - I bought one of my own, that said same Ginetta factory demonstrator that just about every motoring magazine in 1974 tested. Reversing lights added at some stage. From the days of being the factory demonstrator it has taken a turn for the worse and the door had to be kept propped on a cinder block so I will be making another set of door hinges in the near future - reminder to self to order steel and bolts tomorrow. Genuine low mileage car never raced or rallied And that poorly looking Holbay turns over freely! Readers of this thread thought they were getting confused with just the 5 sorry 6 G15 restorations / projects I am involved/assisting with, we now have 2 G21's to add to the mix - same doors, same hinges, same Rootes derived engines, same triumph suspension and same tacho and speedo so may as well leave them in the same thread as this will not be making progress particularly quickly this is getting rather out of hand again. Flippin' lucky that the bloke got to that TVR350i up the road in Market Drayton before me - a reason for everything some say.

Just got an email back from the owner of the white G21
" I remember going to that actual Motor Show with my father and seeing that car, although memory suggests it was either white or silver at the time. Whatever colour it was, it reinforced a lifelong interest in all things Ginetta and I thought it was the most beautiful car at the show."
I am told that this was the second Holbay G21S car built but the first to be road registered due to being taken off the production line for the '73 show.

Now that's a bit special. I thought so, makes you wonder at the world when these "planet alignment" coincidence type things occur. Whatever next.

I was in York the other week when I saw a car coming towards me, it had those distinctive little bug eyed indicators above the bumper. ‘Oh look, a G15’, I thought to myself. When it got closer I realised it was a G21. I think it’s the first time I’ve ever seen one on the road.

Better than I have done as outside of attending a specific event/meeting - I have never actually seen any other Ginetta being driven on the road - the closest to date being a G32 on the back of a truck.

A bit of work on the G21 today. But first off I had a bit of work to do on this. The Daughters Boyfriend/Fiances Tractor ! which managed to sheer off a couple of bolts - one still had a bit of thread proud so undid it via welding a nut on the remaining thread - the other was slightly sunk into the axle so needed a bit more care but it worked out okay with building up weld until I could get some grips on. Just some new bolts to order now. Then onto the G21 - cut the hole for the Gear lever and fitted the gear stick which due to the very tall tunnel does not protrude very far. Gave the inside a tidy up and dropped the dash in to see where we are going The MX5 dash pod should fit in quite well when I have modified the dash to get it drop back. Now working on the wiring as I want to get it running before the end of Spring.

It has been very interesting digging up the history on this car and there are still a chapters to fill for example when exactly it went from Burgundy to Red. We know that it went from Silver to Burgundy when the car was just over a year old and the second owner purchased it from the factory but the time frame on the Red is unknown I have also found that the Webers were replaced with Dellorto's at some point and the drivers seat has been swapped out for a Huntsman recliner with head-rest. All of the trim appears to be present with the car even the original centre console is with the car although some wood working is currently adorning the transmission tunnel. Hopefully when the rain lets up I will be able to break into the boot to see whats lurking in there and after cleaning up the inside a bit make my way across to the passenger side of the to struggle with the door lock. All the steel has arrived for my next batch of door hinges now word has sneaked out that I have made a few and the bolt kits to fix them have also been ordered. Going to try and get hold of owner number 3 and see what light he can shed on things.

I wonder if this was the same car. It certainly will be, what book is that in? Thanks for posting that. ETA It looks like the same photo location and possibly the same 1974 shoot as the pictures on page 6 from the Motor Sport article

It certainly will be, what book is that in? It is 'On Four Wheels' It was one of those weekly magazines that you collect then put into binders. My next door neighbour collected them back in the seventies I expect. They now reside on a shelf in my downstairs toilet of all places,

You probably know already but just in case you didn't the door check straps shown on the previous page look very like Elan Plus2 / Rover P6 parts.

Sunshine and showers and having a quick tea break. For today until things really dry out a bit I though I would attempt to get into the seized boot and passenger door to see what's what and get some access to clean the inside out a little bit. The boot was casuing me some head scratching as to how to get it open without damaging the body and the penny dropped when I was looking at the photo of the paint on the bootlid - external hinges.... Drive out the hinge pin and we have access to the lock. Block of wood wedged in and we have sight of what the issue is. In with the air cut off tool to whip through a few nuts and bolts and a bracket and we have access 30 plus years of being shut and accumulated dirt. A boot of junk. An old new tyre Clean - even the original 1974 bungy works if a little frayed in placecs I wonder if this will operate Suns out back to it.

Managed to have a chat with the last person who actually used the car daily
The engine was rebuilt by Holbay in the early 80's and he had them tune it further - so it's a Holbay tuned Holbay! the Dellorto's were fitted as part of the tuning upgrades. Mileage is genuine but its on it's second way around. It was painted Red when the car had an altercation on the N/S front - It went back to Ginetta for the repairs and whilst there it had a fresh coat of paint.
Although there are large holes in the chassis it is better than expected.
Need to find myself a Hillman Hunter handbrake
Just that blasted passenger door to try and get open.

Are you sure it should be Dellorto's as my Holbay 1725 engine had twin 40 Weber carbs?
