And a couple of hours later It should pack so that it is 44.5" wide 55" long and 4" deep - I plan to make the upstand a bolt on fixture that will also bolt to the stand fixings - I am yet to finalise that part of the design. Some drilling of the various tubes now before looking at getting the welder out to tack the the 3 parts together. I quite like the way that this drawing and fabricating method is working out - Looks like I may be spending a bit of time this evening on the old CAD drawing up ab egg crate grille for a Gemini. I have so much steel left over it will be very tempting to drag the rusty heap of a chassis out from under the G21S and get it to the blasters - - The priority was going to be shifting it on but the Mazda conversion is going so well on the other G21 - A Papaya Mazda Turbo IRS G21 Restomod is so very very tempting - screw the history Anyway whilst the entire Ginetta community have palpitations I am going to finish this tea and carry on with my little jig.

Putting the bogof G clamps to good use. Yep, would have been daft to buy something specifically for a job and then not to use ! Just having a tidying up and planning day today to give the neighbours a bit of peace and quiet. Probably end up doing gardening to keep busy WTF!!

An hour this evening saw a bit more prep work and the first welding on KBW. Four sleeves welded into the new and replacement cross-members 6 more sleeves to go. I also cut one of the first chassis repair sections Tomorrow may see the front cross-member drilled for sleeves and and the steering rack mounting re-inforcing plates tacked in as I gradually make my way from front to back.

And on BOY - the other day we managed to get as far as hot gluing some bits back in. And hacking the rear section into many pieces - it's a start.

Okay - so maybe not as interesting as paint drying - here's watching welds cool. Chassis is 10 foot long - this is the first 18" that I have completed this morning. Chassis stiffening member - with 2 sleeves Two steel plates to stiffen the steering rack mounts Two holes cut and sleeved in front cross member a few pin holes and incomplete welds filled. Inside of the chassis members not too bad for 46 years. Chopping out and welding up of the very corroded centre part of the front main chassis cross-member next and dropping in a few more sleeves.

Lunch break. Chop out that very second hand centre section and replace with a nice new shiny replacement This chassis will no longer be the lightweight version. Hello, what's that? Sorry nature you can't have this G15 back just yet. And a bit of patching required. And in goes the new. Next we have a repair section in the central chassis tube a few sleeves, large and small, a number of patches and that will be it for the day. As we move toward the rear of the chassis things will get a little trickier.

It looks like someone's tried to mate the two by dripping melted candles on it.. Won't be long before it's put right, though... I have no idea what was trying to be achieved with piling weld on weld on weld to that degree but what I do know it that it will be a Royale with Cheese PITA to remove. There's a foot or so to go before I get there though. Only half a day on the car today as me and the lad went for a run out in the Gemini to meet up with a mate and have a tea at the local airfield. The inside of the chassis where the repair sections need to be let in are pretty good so no worries on that score. It's funny how localised pin holes and corrosion can be. The three underside three patches were done, the sleeving of the rear cross-member for the coolant tubes and another little area of corrosion on the rear cross-member Once they were done I figure it would be a good idea to check to see if the tubes could be let through the chassis - Just about. I also spent far too much time removing shot blasting debris from all of the box sections - in particular the rear 2" diagonal sections. Couple of days off so it's the final repairs on the main platform tomorrow and then Seat mounting threaded sleeves - x 8 Chassis mounting sleeves for body - x 2 Chassis mounting sleeves for roll cage - x 6 Side plates for body mount - x 6 Captive nuts for seat mount - x 4 Trangulation plates and captive nuts for body mount x 10 or so Rear suspension cross-member supports - x 2 After that I can move onto the rear section repairs and modifications !

Final repairs to the chassis completed today - and again the inside of the box sections are in pretty good order. All of the 6 side plates have been welded on from the top side The seat mount seat belt mount plates have been extended as per the very last chassis And some of the triangulation plates have been tacked in. A good number of the mounting holes seat and body have been opened up ready for sleeving. As we are approaching the work required on the rear of the chassis I removed the shoddy repair plates ready to do some more cut and shuts to the tubes and I noticed an odd step. Once the paint was removed it was clear that we had quite a large crack in the chassis. No evidence of corrosion so that's a stress crack over the spring mount - no doubt created by the corrosion to the nearby parts of the chassis - welded it up and it will be strengthened considerably when the additional steel tubing goes over it. No evidence of cracking on the passenger side - so just created by the driver?

The extended seat/seat belt mount strips - why Ginetta felt the need to save on a few inches of steel strip and not run it to the back until the final cars made we shall never know. Triangle plates just tacked at the moment, these will be drilled for body mounts with captive nuts. That crack welded. Holes getting ready for sleeves Damage getting ready for repair.

quite scary how rotten those are, glad they are getting the full treatment Compared to some of the shockers others have to deal with on this board I think we get off pretty lightly with our Plastic Fantastics. If just restoring back to Ginetta standard spec that would have been little more than a weekends work start to finish.

what are the tubes for DS ? sorry not paying attention, is it to get services to the front of the car, or torsion bars or something ? Cooling for a front mount rad I think. Question DS, how much extra weight do you think you add vs the gains in torsional rigidity ? These are light little cars but assume a little extra goes a long way ? Once welded would it be worth galvanising to keep it all nice and not rusty for the future ? James
