Wow - that’s appalling! And still being used in competition like that to this very day as it still has its approval - Add into the mix that particular competition cage is 16 SWG tubing. We also have an aluminium version of the same design, approved in the day. Then again have you seen the chassis of a Porsche 917 ? - do you want to?

One of my pet hates after my son managed to do this at low speed The standard (optional) rollbar was just about up to the job but we approached Protection & Performance to have them made to today’s standards, with optional diagonal or horizontal crossbars. We also lent them a car to design a full MSA spec 4 point cage that’s expandable to 6 point.

it was quite common practice back in the day, my friend owns GM dealersport group S prototype car (built 1986) which has alloy cage in it.

is the chassis cut like this DS ? not loaded question, literally just for conversation sake on wobblyness Yep that's the way they are built from the factory - However there are quite a few that have been made that do not have the long front rails which I have mentioned previously. There was a G15 chassis build on the Imp site using stainless and the front of the chassis welded to a one piece front rail - Both really really stupid idea's. The front part of the chassis is angled up to provide Caster due to the use of trunnions.

How you make progress with a project - you work on it as often as possible even if for just an hour - so tonight was preparing the additional brackets for the front suspension lower wishbones, the support webs for the outer diagonal cage/body brackets and drilling 3 more holes for the ROPS, just 3 more to go. The chassis side rails being 3mm does mean that you can get a really good deep weld prep for the sleeves but with 3mm wall box section sleeving the chassis with 1.6 SWG tubing seems like adding bailing twine to the belt and braces! A tip for avoiding swarf getting everywhere. Job done. Also works when using the hand drill and provides a useful place for keeping drill bits when doing stage drilling.

knowing nothing about them , do the shells add anything to the party? just wondering as the front legs look a bit...ummm...wibbly... where they join the main section of the frame? I too was looking at that and thinking the same thing. Otherwise what a lovely looking neat wee chassis they are. So dinky. Much nicer to work on than a rusty monocoque (except I know very little about composites except for what I learn from this forum)

One less G15 chassis on the grounds - KBW is now at the Cheshire facility where it will continue to be fettled - painted, a rather fetching mid grey by the sounds of it, some final welding jobs, protection of the inside of the tubes, linishing, chasing the threaded bushes etc. etc. And most importantly getting the body matched to it.
SLC is also almost at the end of its works program with just a few final welding and fabrication jobs to complete.

The home straight - and a stop for some lunch after this mornings progress All the sleeves for the cage are now done and I am progressing down the N/S Lower suspension brackets done, extra cage support done and chassis weld finished for the rear structure - Just about to move onto the closing up the rear support before doing the same on the O/S Will round off the day replacing the the front tower support brace. There will still be a few holes to drill in it and the odd bracket and captive nut to do here and there and if I make good enough progress they will also be done today. After that all it needs is a bit of paint.

Bit of cleaning up and rounding off of brackets here and there but the job is done. SLC's owner captain Itchy is dropping over on Monday to clean it up and give it coat of paint. before it gets it get made up into a rolling chassis to have the body dropped on it. This thread will now resume works on the G21M for a while - which reminds me I need to get a battery on charge.

On Itchy's G15 we removed and welded up a couple of large nutserts that had been fitted to the chassis to provide fixing for an ARB mount. They were not particularly effective and we will look at the mount method during future works. As well as that little job the tops of the welds were taken off and remnants of steel and sharp edges were all removed and it was given a coat of epoxy mastic.
