This link may not be acceptable, so ignore if it is not. I used to have Towmotor forklift with a Continental engine in it. One day my wife came home from work and found a forklift in her backyard. She was not amused, specially when I told her " but it looked to cute and small at the side of the road..." ( where I'd found it with a For Sale sign on it ) Reliability problems meant I didn't use it much, but it was a home for a while for stray feral kittens... Edit. Maybe this is a way to make the link better... As a car guy you are always lifting things, and trying to not wreck your back. That's what the forklift was for, but it turned out it wasn't my best purchase ever ( not my worst either...) When I need to move engines and other heavy things now I use my Sandrail. ( I put a towhitch receiver on the front that I hook a cherrypicker into.) So if acceptable, the link is a sandrail. ( mine is powered by a turbocharged 2litre Pinto )

Did I miss what the link was between the Buick Riviera and the Lincoln Continental?

Did I miss what the link was between the Buick Riviera and the Lincoln Continental? my guess is you both composed at exactly the same time in reply to metalshapes post. 2.3 turbo pinto engine is an open goal easy tap in for the merkur xr4ti. in 85 ford motor company america decided to revive the mid market premium brand "mercury" (which slotted in between ford and lincoln) by following the unpopular market trend of rebadging imported compact cars from europe. As the vehicles were specifically being imported from germany the clever tacticians at ford made a friday afternoon decision to use the german word for mercury "merkur". One said import was our home grown sierra launched in 1981, ford america intended their new model to compete with other sporty german sedans from bmw. Under the hood was a 2.3 pinto engine with added turbo and fuel injection hence the new T and i in the model name. It got hit by the federal emissions bat quite hard, but still, with its 145bhp it was quite exotic engine combo (for the time) compared to our clunky normally aspirated 2.8 and 2.9 v6 versions. Famously ford had a conflict of interests with GMC who already had an established model in the GMC sierra pickup truck, so the american ford sierra simply became known as the merkur xr4ti, no model name, just basically a trim/spec level ! although it wasnt marketed or sold in the UK, one home-grown claim to faim for the xr4ti is in 1985 when (now) touring car legend andy rouse won the 1985 british touring car championship in an xr4ti. in retrospect this was a chilling prequel for the sierra cosworth and RS500 which followed, that became an absolute sledgehammer of a car in group A tin top racing.

In its 3rd incarnation the Riviera was famous for its handsome 'boat tail' styling. Also sporting a boat tail in earlier years was the stylish Auburn 851 Speedster;

the links have gone maddly awry, but sticking with Riviera, a name with a firm nod to the french riviera designed to evoke a feeling of aspiration, allurement, exclusivity, luxury and quality. exactly Like in 1986 when vauxhall decided to make a special edition named after Antibes, the town in the french Riviera. The luxrious and alluring quality in their case was not charging you extra for a sunroof or having 5 forward gears. quote from the brochure "an extraordinarily complete specification". available in cavalier astra or nova in a range of primary colours, with accented interior cloth, i don't know about you but i'm already scrabbling for my flippers and snorkel out of the loft.

As we're naming cars after cities, here's a 1976 Chrysler New Yorker. Because it's massive.

Chrysler Australia, officially FCA Australia, is the importer of Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Alfa Romeo and Fiat vehicles for sale in the Australian marketplace. However, there had previously been a "Chrysler Australia Ltd" which had operated as a vehicle manufacturer in Australia from 1951 until 1980, and was subsequently taken over by Mitsubishi Motors Australia. One of these Mitsubishi Chrysler is this little beauty

on the subject of weird asia pacific collaborations produced domestically in australia, is the holden astra built in victoria between 84 and 89. despite the obvious connection to general motors and GM already having their own product of this name, australia got a badge engineered nissan sunny

Not sure if we've had this before, but a Nissan by any other name (as Shakesphere nearly said) leads us to the Alfa Romeo Arna. (AKA Nissan Cherry Europe). Not quite a straight forward badge engineering job though, as it had an Alfa Sud boxer engine (and probably other oily bits too).

As far as weird collaborations with Nissan, it doesn't get much weirder than the Alfa Romeo Arna (an acronym for "Alfa Romeo Nissan Autoveicoli")

dauphine (which is an old province in france which the southeast side included the riviera, nice work metalshapes ) is also the title given to the wife of the french heir, an equivalent title to our princess of wales. in the context of the renault it meant queen of the road. there's loads of places you could go with that but i choose princess of wales, in a car thread, segue into escort RS turbo !

You should see what Michelotti did with one of those. The engine in the Michelotti car was worked over by Virgilio Conrero, due to the Alfa Romeo side of it, who did the tuning on various Alfas until 1969, after which he did tuning work for Opel, which is why that name appears on many racing Opels, like this GT.
