The 1.4 engine is also known as the E-Type, so you know what that means. That's right! Ah, yes, you were probably expecting a Jaguar there. Here we go then, you'll like this. The E-Type, the car you might have been expecting, had early design proposals from Malcolm Sayer and it's form dictated by the need to make it as functionally aerodynamic as possible in a time before CAD. Sayer assisted in development of the D-Type (the car that preceded the E-Type) which was a very successful race car and could achieve 192.4mph on the Mulsanne Straight, which in the mid-50s was absolutely insane. That's why the Renault 19 is related to the Bentley Mulsanne.

The Mulsanne Straight (Ligne Droite des Hunaudières in French) is the name used in English for a formerly 6 km (3.7 mi) long straight of the Circuit des 24 Heures around which the 24 Hours of Le Mans auto race takes place. Since 1990, the straight is interrupted by two chicanes, with the last section, that includes a kink and a hump, leading to the sharp corner near the village of Mulsanne.
After exiting the Tertre Rouge corner, cars would spend almost half of the lap at full throttle, before braking for Mulsanne Corner. The Porsche 917 long tail with its 5.0 litre, Flat 12 engine used from 1969 to 1971, had reached 362 km/h (225 mph). After this, engine size was limited and top speeds dropped until powerful turbo engines, pioneered by French manufacturer Renault, were allowed, like in the 1978 Porsche 935 which was clocked at 367 km/h (228 mph).

Ferdinand Porsche worked with occasionally with Hans Ledwinka, who often dined with Hitler, Ledwinka sued VW when the Beetle appeared to resemble the Tatra 97, rear engine flat4 with a centre tunnel structure. Hitler solved the legal problem with an invasion. In 1965 VW paid Tatra 1,000,000 Dm compensation.

Hitler solved the legal problem with an invasion. Yes he did, it was probably his first solution rather than his final....

Also rear-engined and air cooled was the Tucker 48: You really have to see one in person to grasp how long and low they were...

In the late 40s and early 50s quite a few cars sported a central light. Usually, a car would come with two headlights and you would purchase a separate spotlight or foglight (sometimes one of each) that was then normally clamped to a bumper. For some manufacturers, particular of more aspirational models like the Tucker, it was deemed prudent to include this auxilliary light in their new cars. It was shortlived, as these things sometimes are. Perhaps the most infamous car to be so equipped in the UK is the Rover P4, often nicknamed the Cyclops.

P4 was the basis for rovers jet1 concept, a gas turbine propelled tourer which also held the world speed record in 1952 for gas turbine, at 152mph

An achievement for which it won the Dewar Trophy in 1951. Another company who were experimenting with gas turbine propulsion and who also received the Dewar Trophy (admittedly not for their gas turbine work and much earlier for endurance in 1922), was Armstrong Siddeley (AS). AS did a lot of work with aircraft engineering which no doubt influenced their cars which often featured interesting design and construction. A personal favourite is the slightly gawky Hurricane, a two door drophead coupé that really couldn't be mistaken for anything else, especially with the peculiar scallops on the front wings.

Speaking of aircraft engineering influencing car design, the obvious link is to French aircraft builders S.N.C.A.N., or Societe Nationale de Construction AeroNautique who in 1953 displayed their "Inter" at the Paris Auto show This particular example being a 1957 Inter 175A Berline, of course.

A car made by an aircraft manufacturer you say, have a flying one, but it's landing technique needs a bit of work.

Freewheel. That's what connects Saab and this car. The SAAB 96 made use of freewheel technology, something that improved fuel economy with the two-stroke engines but also lead to issues due to the unique way in which two-stroke engines are lubricated. The system was continued into the four stroke engines too. Land Rover were also a user of freewheel technology on the early units and so were Rover P4s up until 1959, which is how this all links rather neatly to THAT Land Rover above.

The Land Rover series I, II, and III (commonly referred to as series Land Rovers, to distinguish them from later models) are off-road vehicles produced by the British manufacturer Rover Company that were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep. As the original Jeep had no doors, the Land Rover was the first mass-produced civilian four-wheel drive car with doors on it. In 1992, Land Rover claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had built were still in use. The first prototype had a distinctive feature — the steering wheel was mounted in the middle of the vehicle. It hence became known as the "centre steer". It was built on a Jeep chassis and used the engine and gearbox out of a Rover P3 saloon car. The bodywork was handmade out of an aluminium/magnesium alloy called Birmabright, to save on steel, which was closely rationed. The choice of colour was dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green. The first pre-production Land Rovers were being developed in late 1947 by a team led by engineer Arthur Goddard.

Land Rover has always had close military ties, just as the Jeep that inspired it started out as a military vehicle. The Land Rover has been the basis of many prototypes for the military, including the Shorland Armored car which went through several iterations in the early 60s. There have been many other vehicles to serve as the basis for armored car prototypes, some of the most interesting being these based on the John Deere Model A tractors:

The Morris engine in the Lamborghini is probably the one found in the CV, which was certainly around at the same time and sported a six cylinder 3.5 litre engine. The most remarkable thing about these trucks is that they have absolutely nothing remarkable about them from what little I can find out. Photographs and bits of information I have found makes them appear to be a truck that did everything and was used by everyone, and entirely conventional in every way. As always, I'm happy for someone to prove otherwise and shed some interesting light on this seemingly mundane vehicle that just got on with getting stuff done and then disappeared pretty much completely.
