	Hi, looking for some advice, preferably from experience but I'll take whatever is offered. Tomorrow I'm viewing a car for sale locally. Seller apparently bought it last week only to find it won't fit in his garage. As such he's looking to shift it in favour of something smaller. Currently he only has the New Keeper slip. My question then is how to tax a newly bought car in this situation. DVLA advice on their website is not to buy a car without a V5, and my instinct is to wait until it turns up, but it would be good to know if there's a workaround just in case. Thanks (And yes, I will be taking a tape measure and asking to see this 'too small garage'.) (And if anyone can tell me what PFA means in a car ad on Facebook that would be lovely.)

	Pfa is 'picture for attention' and not usually a related photo or a photo of the item. In terms of actually buying and taxing it, you are a bit stuck because you'll be taxing it in their name which will then be cancelled when you actually sort the logbook. Which is a bit of a grey area. I'd want to wait till the new v5 turned up.

	Sounds a bit fishy, I'd be checking the car thoroughly for any issues (my instinct is they've bought it, found something wrong and trying to flip it quickly) You're essentially buying with no V5, so get a receipt; dated, addressed correctly and signed. You'll have to do the V62 for £20 Caveat emptor

	Thank you Rich, that was lovely. And blindingly obvious in hindsight. Thank you Mylittletony, yes it felt fishy to me as well. Not an issue now as the car apparently sold this afternoon. I have to say though, I'm surprised there isn't a straightforward way of taxing a car and declaring yourself the new new keeper online or over the phone. Or at least a way of slapping "emergency tax" on a vehicle. Seems like the dvla are missing a trick there, if only to wrong a few more scheckels off the motorist.

	You can declare new keeper online, but you’d still have to wait for his logbook to turn up before you could do it again.
