Hello to all, I’m new to this site and would appreciate some advice, I’ve recently purchased a rover P5b 3500 ‘1971’ it hasn’t been started in a while so charged battery, put 10 litres of fuel in, turned her over starter motor turning but not firing up? Took fuel pipe off pump no fuel, ignition light on no fuel either? Fuel pump doesn’t make a noise with ignition on but as there’s no wires to it maybe that’s why? What’s my next action please, thanks Jon

Fairly sure these are a mechanical fuel pump as standard. Hence it won't make a noise when you've got the ignition on.
I've got one which has been converted to an electric pump (not necessarily a recommendation!).
If you blow down the pipe towards the tank, is an assistant able to hear bubbles in the tank? It could be that there's curse word at the bottom of the tank blocking the progress of fuel to the engine.
Also, is it on the reserve on the tap in the car? (to the left of the front speaker).

Hi, I have a glass fuel filter between the fuelpump and carb on my daily, it makes it very easy to check fuel is flowing ok. Your pump might just need priming, easy if you fit a glass filter - remove pipe from the carb and suck to get fuel from the tank to the pump and up to the carb. Stop sucking when the glass filter shows fuel or you will get a mouthful of petrol! You could also try removing the air filter and pouring a splash of petrol down through the carbs, then try starting. If it fires you know ignition & compression are ok. Note glass fuel filter, above-right of the radiator cap.

Hi, As tofufi says check the main/reserve tap. The reserve capacity on them is a couple of gallons so if the tap is on 'main' it may not be able to draw the fuel that's in there. However the 'O' ring in the tap dries out and leaks, it needs replacing with a 'Viton' one for use with modern fuel.

As a “quick” test ..... disconnect fuel hose on pump that goes to the tank and stick it in a fuel can, with some fuel in it obviously... and try it from there.
