Loathe to mention it, but Toyota Corolla total worldwide sales exceed even those of the VW Beetle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_CorollaAlbeit in a dozen model changes, over the years. Has to make it fairly iconic, I guess...

Top gear did a section on this back in then clarkson days, they went through many manufacturers and they went with Alfa cause they're all special in different ways. Personally Ford. Someone mentioned previously since 2000 they've faultered a tad, I think the st range will stick around for many years good looking cars.

all awful in my opinion. I am surprised Subaru, Aston, Morgan, MG and Triumph haven't been mentioned...

Ford. RS200 GT40 Ford GT Cortina GT Lotus Cortina Lotus Escort Mexico RS2000 Escort Cosworth Sierra Cosworth DVF engine Mustang F-150 Supervans 1,2 & 3 Every one, rare desirable icon's. You missed out the following, in no particular order; Model T, Model A, the pre-war American V8s, Thunderbird, the Fairlane / Galaxie range of sedans and wagons, Falcon, including of course the Aussie GT and GTHO, the Zephyr / Zodiac range, particularly the Mk3, and the rest of the American pickups and light trucks, not just the F150. For me it's Ford and BMC / BL all the way. No-one else comes close.

Agreed, but can't see the X type, F Type, or the new XJ ever being up there - or the S type come to think of it - they were/are all awful in my opinion. The X Type and 'new' S Type didn't merit an appearance because, (imo), they're very average motor cars and have none of the Jaguar star quality. The F Type and newer XJ's, (and XF for that matter), are a bit too new to be mentioned in a retro icon context and 'the jury is still out' on these although I will admit that I am impressed by the looks of the F Type but that's probably because it has taken so many styling cues from the golden era, (as the XK8 did). I don't like the XF but I hated the XJS once and it took 30 years for it to grow on me. The XJ8 didn't get a mention as the XJ styling was getting very long in the tooth by then and they made such a hash of the engine.

Jesus, who felt the need to quote a picture of every single Jaguar ever built? Just broke my mouse scroll wheel ![B-|](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/notamused.png) I'd probably go with Auburn/Cord/Duesenberg. Every single car any of the triumvirate ever made was an icon

Auburn & Cord were amazing cars although I will admit to not knowing enough about Duesenberg.

I was going to post Land Rover pretty much the whole range is iconic (well perhaps not the Evoque, or the current Disco...)
What about Triumph, Herald, Spitfire, TRs, Dolomite Sprint, Stag...
BTW the Peugeot in Ronnin was a 405.

That's good right? Everyone gets to look at photos of all those awesome old Jags twice!

All included in the greater BMC / BL group. Not Freelander though cos they suck donkey dick all day long / are not really a Land Rover in the classic sense.

Some very broad interpretations of the word “icon” in this thread. There aren’t that many as far as I’m concerned - they have to be something joe public would recognise for a start.
Austin: Mini.
Ford: Mustang and Model T. Everything else is too parochial. Mk1 Escorts only mean something to someone who followed rallying in the 70s for example.
Mercedes: 300SL Gullwing, G wagon, and maybe the W123.
Ferrari: Daytona and Testarossa. Anything else is just a red sports car.
Lamborghini: Countach.
Aston Martin: DB5
Citroen: 2CV and DS
VW: Beetle, Kombi, Golf GTi.
Porsche: 911.
Jaguar: E Type.
Bentley: the supercharged Le Mans cars. Everything else is just a rebadged Rolls as far as most people are concerned.
Rolls: not sure. All of them, except the BMW stuff?
