I'm thinking I could do with an MPV type vehicle. But not a sad "I smell of pee" or "I have given up any self respect I once had now I am a dad" mobile. I want to be able to transport 3-4 adults, a baby or two in a seat (or two) and associated tat and luggage. The obvious answer is But I need something with decent-ish MPG, something RHD, something that can be parked relatively easily so no excuse to buy this and certainly not with a 440... so more along the lines of the Mitsubishi Chariot, Nissan Prarie, or WHY Although I am concerned that they aare probably a fair bit cack to drive. So howabout a seven seat verision of the ol' W123 actually - this kinda rawks... 280TE version as well. So whats the retrorides thoughts on a multi person hauler?

Volvo 240? Lots of yummy Volvo engine cross-pollenation availability?
Montego Estate? Again, in-family fruityness is there for the taking. The central 'crease' in the bodywork also lends itself to wood fablon orsumsness.....

I'm putting off a similar dilemma and have a similar list of requirements from SWMBO but added to that, it must have aircon and must be red The Merc / Montego / Volvo all put the 2 rearmost seats facing backwards and are pretty much in the crumple zones, not great. With a sensible hat on, the Honda Shuttle (Odyssey for imports) is probably the most reliable and a quick call to DarrenW should get some evidence for it looking good with some mods or not. I also have a thing for the Volvo 850 but I'm not sure it's wide enough for 3 in the rear If it was me, I'd have a '70s yank wagon but apparently being able to find a space without doing 3 laps of the carpark is important, and 15mpg could be a concern too Be interested to see what this thread throws up.

I've heard that they have reliability issues (what, from an old Renault? Get away!) and servicing is pricey because everything is hidden away. But I like the look of the early Espace, in blue natch

The problem with the estate and kids in the boot idea is that when the boot is full of kids you can´t fill it with cr*p! Think you need a van, although the 280TE is the best Mercedes they ever built IMO! These can be made to got really quick if you want......

I really like these... I know it doesn't fill the criteria as such but a bigger version would do me... I'm watching this thread with interest... looking myself... *edited to add criteria disclaimer*

How about a Sherpa Combi?
You'll buy one for pence, they're built to be squaddie proof so they're tough as old boots, the bits are cheaper than Northern Rock shares and you can look down on Range Rover owners.

alistairk in da house: I want to be able to transport 3-4 adults, a baby or two in a seat (or two) and associated tat and luggageSince you are the guru of Yank Tank I would say one of these if you want to cruise in style & comfort with a V8 under the hood and still cheap enough..... Used to have one as a "Surf Truck" for a while in Cali and I just loved the way it drove and was (in stock Grand Wagoneer trim) a real luxury truck that you could pull up everywhere in without looking out of place, even in 902 10..... DP says: Looking sharp....

If you want something with luggage space and seats then you'll need to go van based: A Tourneo (Transit) is a good choice - cheap on spares and they come with a surprisingly high spec (yes, aircon is a common option). A Caravelle is a similar story, but a bit pricier for spares - obviously a VW is cooler than a Transit. No aircon, but it's red, got big wheels and a DVD!This one is red and has aircon!Vitos are getting cheaper, so you might be able to find a high spec one a reasonable price. Not redIf I were going to get another van-based people carrir though, this would be my next choice (unless I went American!) - a Hiace. They're usually really well specced too. Not red againIf a van is too big (and the missus doesn't like the idea!) then might I suggest a W124 wagon: There's usually plenty for sale, but when I was looking for one I found it hard to find one with the right options (aircon, leather, 7 seats) unless you go for the bigger engines. Which is why I ended up with a Volvo 850, which is great. Mine's a T5 which isn't the most economical (30mpg motorway, 23mpg around London) but does do 150mph and is fully specced (climate, cruise, leather, computer, remote locking etc). I'd certainly recommend one, especially at the current prices. They're not massive, but not small either. It will carry five adults in relative comfort and still have room for a couple of rear facing under 12s in the back. I'm pretty sure, given Volvo's safety record that the kids aren't in a crumple zone. The armrest in the rear also doubles as a child seat, a brilliant idea which works fantastically. Mine was £1000. Just what the missus asked for! This one is the sought after 'R' though so it's more expensive - it'll probably never lose money though.A nice non-R T5 in working order could be got for £1000, if you don't want a T5 (which you should!) then half that could get you a good one.
