First direct injection diesel was a 4L2 produced by L. Gardner and sons of Patricroft, Manchester in 1929 !!!! I know this 'cause I'm currently restoring the 8th one ever built!
Didn't the NSU 1100 preceed the spider?

We also have a 1902 Gardner with variable valve timing and roller cam followers! Didn't the NSU 1100 preceed the spider? I was right about the Dunlop ABS then!

First airbags - 1974 Oldsmobile Toronado
I've seen film footage of a 1971 or 1972 Chevy with airbags being tested and there is a restored example I've seen in a magazine or somewhere which has the private number "bag71" or "bag72"
I'm also intrequed by the 1939 Buick first turn signals, I assume they mean flashing signals rather than semaphone ones which had been about before then. Also in 1932 Morris had "traffic lights" which attached to the side of the car and showed red for "I am going to stop" amber for "I am preparing to pull away" and green for "I am turning" - these were an optional extra and I have only ever seen photos of them, never for real.

I'll dig a bit further to find out when the first production cars were fitted with them. The first mass produced 'run of the mill' production car with 4 wheel disc brakes was the Renault 8 & 10

Pretty sure Volvo were the first with standard fit seat belts in 1956, although they were options on US Fords around that time.
Also the belts were two point and not the three pointers we know now, they looked a bit weird.

I thought the turbo Corvair beat the Olds into production?

Volvo back as my main squeeze, more boost and some interior goodies on the way.

The Jensen FF is known as the world's first production 4 wheel drive car I think the Landrover/Jeep etc pre-date it a little

First UK market Turbo was actually the BMW 2002 Turbo in 1973. Whilst it was only made in LHD, this is because they couldn't fit the steering column in for RHD, as the turbo was in the way.... Saab 99 turbo didn't come along for another 5 years. The 99 came out in '77 - the first volume turbo car. As well as a compact T3 turbo it had a new wastegate design to make the car more usable 'everyday'. I think garret still pay a royalty fee to saab for the wastegate.. also the first to fit headlamp wipers as standard equipment in 1970.

Pretty sure it was early fifties re air con... First air con was in a packard in 1939 apparently, but I feel this might have just been a fridge with ducting. Cadillac fitted 300 cars with air con in 1941, but to switch em off you had to remove the belt from the engine bay. The one I remember is first switch off-able air was in a '54 Pontiac V8's.

Oh poo, you beat me to it ;D The Jensen FF is known as the world's first production 4 wheel drive car, which dates around 1966 when released. It also had the Dunlop/Maxaret ABS system fitted. Presumably this was all experimented and tested with for a good few years before though.

Saab may have made a lot of those sorry turbo uglies, but there is no doubt that the Turbo Corvair and the Olds were both Production cars in every sense of the word long before saab got away from lawn mower engines in funny little cars... ;D ;D ;D ;D

Many years ago I changed my driving style to cope with rising fuel prices; I have now reached the stage where I am contemplating keeping my eyes shut in order to lower wind resistance.

I've worked on some of those early packard air cons.there is no difference in operation to the latest systems. The older systems are of better quality though. The oldest Caddy I've worked on with air is a 1952 limo with two seperate systems.one for the front and and trunk unit with plastic tubes over your head ,in the rear. it's like riding in a refrigerated cool room. Self levelling suspension was Mercedes idea ( naturalich!!) and was used on All 3-0-0 models from 1951 onwards. theres a cady next door to me which has air suspension but it's a 1957 eldorado Broughm, one of only 400 made.
