After much mental towing and froing I've decided to pull the trigger and buy a Japanese Import fresh from the land of the rising sun.
I've found the car, got the importation side of things all sorted through an agent I trust. Now I need to decide the most intelligent way to get it from the docks back to my house so I can have a faff with it before I get it MOT'd and registered.
The car is fairly large, say somewhere between a 5 Series and 7 series in size and weight. It's low. Not daft cambered wheels / stance pervert low, but low enough to take caution on speedbumps lets say.
I originally wanted to just hire a trailer and tow it back with my A4 but because of when I passed my test I'm pretty sure it's not strictly legal. Without opening up that can of worms and endless discussion lets just say that option is out.
I estimate the weight to be around 1600kg or so, meaning it wouldn't likely go on a transit type beavertail (they usually have a bit of a hideous ramp angle I imagine it would ground out on too)
What are peoples suggestions? What have you folks used before? If I end up paying for someone to collect it for me I'd want to be going with them, is that generally an option?
Cheers!

Or if it's somewhere else, insure it on the chassis number and drive it home to a pre booked mot

All fantastic ideas, driving it back insured on the Chassis number to a pre booked MOT - I absolutely love the idea of that but going down the motorway with no plates on is bound to get loads of attention isn't it. Won't they find a way of punishing me for such infuriating use of logic and common sense?
I imagine I could insure it on the chassis number through my trade policy...
Food for thought.

You might get attention but I don't think there's a great deal they can do about it.. Are you about at the weekend? I'll pop over and discuss over a brew edit: Just print the chassis number onto some appropriately coloured laminated paper and roll with that as plates

Just drive it and don't get caught. Worked for my brother-in-law on a 450 km journey in a very dodgy house bus.

trade plates are your friend here. My old import agent used to float about for months on them and never registered the car till it had sold.
