OK. this is a new game. Seems most "fantasy car" or "design this car" things descend into unimaginitive responses involving matt black paint and red steels or rather more excessive thoughts on twin turbo LS1s or Merlin engines in space frames...
So keeping this sensible, real world, and with some thought required...
Say you had £5K land in your lap - a bonus at work, a tax refund, an inheritance, whatever... SWMBO says "why not go blow that on a car!!!" So what are you going to buy and build?
Here's the rules...
It must be a real car. Find it for sale on Autotrader or eBay with a Buy-It-Now (or look through the completed auctions) Also look in the classfieds, forums, etc. "My mate has an Aston Martin Vanatage for sale for £250" type entries will not be accepted! Yahhoo.jp is fine if you add in reasonable costs for shipping and import duty etc. All your parts must also come from catalogues, eBay completed/buy-it-now or other sources where there is a "real" price. The for sale & wanted on this Forum is another good option...
Obviously you can fabricate stuff, but I will be deeply suspicious of anyone claiming to be casting their own crankshafts or grinding their own cams...
You can also claim all labour as free within reason.
You may assume you have the use of a fully fitted workshop so you don't need to make budget allowances for tools needed, although you will for raw materials and consumables.
You may also assume that you have a reasonable level of technical skill (e.g. welding, fabricating, etc.) whether you do or not in the real world.
photoshops or other illustrations to prove your point will gain extra points.
There are no points.
There are no prizes.
Any questions?
Lets see those cars...

OK, I'm game! Now 5k would still not really be enough to get something decent and American and do some cool stuff with it. I could probably get a shed or something undersirable but then it'd be a constant battle to make it good. SO how about something European. A quick search on German-bay has thrown this up. Old OpelIts obviously not perfect and needs a bit of welding going by the photos but its a cool Americanised shape, its a 2-door and its black which seems like a good start too With a BIN of 1800E I reckon it could be landed here for perhaps £1500? That leaves 3 1/2k to play with! The welding would be pretty much free. An engine swap to something more readily available would probably be a good plan. I guess a Vauxhall engine would make sense. Say £750 all in though I could throw a B series in for much less than that The bumpers are painted so if they are straight enough getting them chromed wuold be a few hundred quid. If they aren't then sourcing something else but shiny that fits would probably cost less but add some time to get them to fit. A spot of lowering would be a couple of hundred for new springs and various bits. A brake re-build might be expensive depending on what's there, what could be fitted instead etc. Most of the rest could go on rolling stock Some decent chrome reverse perhaps and proper whitewalls. Then some cans from Halfords and a bunch of fine line tape to sort out the paint ;D That'd all make it quite cool I think

I get to play this game for real every year. I get a bonus yearly which buys me a years motoring. Unfortunately its taxed and I also insure, tax, and modify the car if needed. Ideally 280zx 2+2. £1k probably rotten so I'd have to fix that. £500 cut up the front end to make it look pretty and more like an earlier 'Z £500 buy a lexus with that there quad cam V8 £1k put said engine in car £1k Paint car a nice shade of brown £1k Unfortunately when this years bonus ticks round I still wont have a garage or any equipment so it narrows me down to buying cars that work So I'm probably thinking Porsche 944 for next years fun.

Could get all the bits to build it here for that ,.. car will probably be the best part of £3.5k which should see a solid one landed, registered, MOT'd and taxed. Leaving you £1.5k for some nice deep slotmags to get polished and some suitable lowering parts. Which should all come in at less than £1,250 ... leaving you £250 for some suitable in car entertainment

ta-da! Cost me just over about 5k to but really. Sure its not done yet but thats just because I cant get it to run and I keep spending money I don't have on it. So really I could of built it for 5k but its gonna be more like 7k once its on the road etc. but looking back for another car, I would quite like to build a EARLY bugeyed Starlet KP60 but with a n/a 13b engine Mazda rotory engine, all on carbs with a bridge port, stripped out racer style, with no heater matrix, all the interior out etc, fully stitched welded etd, with large over fender (NOT the TRD style kit - don't like) just large riveted on arches, all in black with a set of 13x8 and 13x9 SSR Mesh rims and equal length 5 link rear axle. Would be pretty cool and I think easy to do on a 5k budget. something along these lines....

Already Building it, and it`ll be less than 5K too ;D What he said Sierra -Light -nuff HP, plenty Torque RWD LSD ;D However. Hand me a 5k cheque today and i'd probsland my self a Knight rider shape Trans Am, plonk some custom wheels on, treat it to custom panels, fresh paint and tweek mechanicals, not nessesarily in that order and keep gooing till the money ran out, though its possible it could be done to a standard to please me within 5k black would be too obvious wouldnt it. Woo give me money!

I'm actually half tempted to sday I'd buy this and spend the rest on crack whores cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-Prefect-Hot-Rod_W0QQitemZ260154803568QQihZ016QQcategoryZ29755but I think I'd go with the £2K option of this Jag XJ6 4 speed manual I have no idea how much those tripple webber setups cost, but I am imagining theres pretty much a grand gone there. I'm also willing ot bet that I could sink another £2K into the engine with TRW or whoever headwork and cams, might just get an exhaust manifold out of that or I might be making my own as well as the exhaust from stainless steel.... If the budget allows some harder rubber bushes and stiffer antiroll bars are on the cards and some Mintex fast road brake pads.

It would have to be something old, something eastern bloc and something hot-roddy looking. In fact an old Volga/chaika would be perfek. That would be perfek for cheapness - about $700 would buy a driveable one from russia. So that's £400 gone. Factor in another £300 for petrol and bribes to drive it back to the UK. Another £300 to get it registered and roadworthy here (for arguments sake). That leaves a healthy £4,000. Which will be just enough to stretch the doors about 5", drop the roof perhaps 2" and build a coupe version of the car. Spend perhaps £1000 on getting gaz (gaz shocks for a gaz - tasty irony) to make up some uprated shocks and springs for it. The other big expense would be to find a wrecked 540i to pillage for interior, engine, gearbox and rear axle. Leave £200 for a custom prop, and I reckon you could have all that for the £5,000 mark and perhaps in a year of work.

SWMBO says "why not go blow that on a car!!!" So what are you going to buy and build? I'm first going to ask what happened to make SWMBO say something completely out of character like that At the moment my fantasy is a late 1920s big tourer but for £5k I'd be lucky to get a rusty chassis and a radiator shell I could be sorely tempted by a big 1940s saloon, straight 8 ftw Which US manufacturers imported the big cars named after bits of London? One was Wimbledon I think?
