I can't help but think that would look amazing with a full length bit of glass in it instead of the metal panel,,,, However the bodywork involved would probably be a massive ball ache to get right for strength because you'd need to remove the C posts for the seamless look. Mercedes and Renault/vauxhall/nissan vans offer stick on black glass for the back wich is glued to the Sides for the glass look. adapt one to fit, and keep the c pillar. Love the thread! can't wait to see your new vision on an old friend.

dikkehemaworst I wasn’t aware of that. Thanks for the heads up. Truth is I was leaning that way after coming across this... I reckon this is a suitable deviation from Preston and may be fun to try replicate. There are some challenges to overcome but I reckon this is the direction I’m headed. Chrysler called this the Rambler Suburban.

Are you going to weld up the top of the rear doors later too?

On VW vans, you stick the glass to the panel to the rear, the glass is 2 pieces but because it’s black, once fitted it looks one piece (as the gap isn’t noticeable) I have windows b-c post in my transporter and thought of fitting c-d over the metal panels for a cleaner look but looking at your old advert you may want a small gap to give the appearance of a post..... Looking forward to updates whatever you do

The landrover rear roof tub isn't really structure, the vehicle is modular separate chassis, all it does is vaguely keep the weather out of the back. It doesn't add 'structure' in the way a monocoque car is constructed. Keep this up too OP, the first van was built to a great standard. I'm sure you'll do the same a second time round!

Flat panel work would make things easy for glass but PT side glass is obviously curved top to bottom & custom curved glass isn't cheap. Polycarbonate sheet with scratch-resistant & UV protective coating would be easy to cut & flexible enough to bond in with curvature. Often see it attached to racers with screw fasteners which usually looks pretty terrible as it flexes around the fastenings & holes rarely oversized enough to account for expansion/contraction. Straight strips on the edges might keep things straight until adhesive sets..

I was referring to the basic structure of the LR's cab remains in place and the glass is simply bonded in place.

Well yes, I can see that through the glass, but that in essence isn't any different to having a glazed roof tub. I like the thought of the one piece glass on the PT. not on the landrover. That's trying to hard to modernise something you really shouldn't but in the case of the PT it could work well. It's just the difficulty involved even if you were to keep the pillars and hide them like the Landrovers glazing I suppose of having glass made up to fit.

Yeah, what he said ^^^ There's one like this that I see from time to time in the town, and in all honesty it's not much different to look at than a standard Land Rover, but somehow it's so striking!

Just so you know I’m actually working on this... It’s looking patchy & worse than it actually is but it’s taking a good deal of time getting the complex curves right - which are now starting to feel about right. Good thing I have a second one to use as reference.

This Project is a slow burn.... Door jams are done & looking oh so tidy. The rest of the body work is also being attended to. Bonnet and front left fender needed some attention and prep work too. No mad rush on this, hopefully have it done by spring.
