Ah - are yours Imperial or Metric?...
If Imperial, then .010 + .006 If Metric, then I can't remember what sizes you normally get..but within 0.01mm should be fine, so 0.40mm (.30 + .10)

Tappets aren't my favourite job, but I see 2 ways you can tackle this : Check everything (don't adjust) - measure each tappet gap, write them all down and compare. It will be very obvious if one is way wrong. -or- Adjust everything - I normally undo all the tappets before starting. Set them as normal and tighten the locknut when done, makes it easy to see if you've missed a cylinder. For any job, pick a cylinder where the inlet & exhaust valves are "rocking", use the list posted by davey to see which cylinder you need check /adjust.

Cheers Nomad. It's actually the rocker itself that is rocking but Phil reckons I'm probably worrying uneccesarily as I generally do. I posted a vid on the previous page to get a sense of whether the rocking rocker was rocking within what's expected/acceptable... I have no idea with these engines. I certainly don't recall that much play on my little Metro engines back in the olden days.... but I'm not going to add a job to my list if it's just me worrying about nothing.
Here's the vid again. If anyone had any thoughts on whether this is just a normally rocking rocker in a relaxed state I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thing that confuses me is that when I've parked up and switchedoff... it's always this one that's loose. The frontmost rocker before it is always tight (the only other one I can reach). Does and engine always come to rest at the same point in its cycle???

Hi, I see what you're worrying about now and it's needlessly. Lots of engines like the metro have the rocker pivoting on a shaft, the Essex is not like that. The centre of the rocker goes over a stud/post and a nut screws on, there is a cup and ball arrangement where the nut meets the rocker which provides the pivot and the adjustment is by turning the nut. The movement you can see/feel is a little more than ideal but just indicates that it wants adjusting. So just man up and get in there. Colin

Cheers Col!
I'm not going to worry about this any more.
= )
edit: But I do plan to have a crack at it over the coming weeks. I've just taken delivery of some better Valvoline oil and a new oil filter today, so I'm going to do an oil change first as it's well overdue for one. The last time I did an oil change last summer, I used Halfords own brand 'classic' 20w-50 oil, which I think is a decent enough oil but I also think it breaks down quite quickly. So I've decided to splash out on 20w-50 Valvoline VR1 this time to see how things go with that before I start adjusting.

Plenty of guides online to adjust tappets on the essex engine. Unfortunately, this isn’t one of them This is for the cologne with Siamese exhaust ports.

AHHHH! Thank you Jim. This is why it all went so horribly wrong with my otherwise excellent drawing. So... anyway, please can you come and do my tappets for me please Jim please? I'll make you a sandwich.
