It was time to add another car to the fleet. I've got a funky green Seat Leon 3dr Ecomotive, that does 60mpg all day long, so that is the daily driver duties taken care of. I've got a very rusty 1967 Morris Oxford Traveller
Still really enjoying that as a project car, but I wanted to add some pace and grace to the fleet. I like wood and leather, funky colours, and I've never owned a V12. Enter a Daimler Double Six, XJ81, XJ40 call it what you will 54,000 miles, and just enough service history to prove it is genuine Cream leather everywhere, great wood, and a black steering wheel - win/win/win The back is even nicer. Sunvisors are leather !! The seat back pockets are leather !! The trim on the B-posts is leather !! The parcel shelf is leather Got out the polish, and it comes up nice. The colour is Morocco Red. Depending on the light and your viewpoint, it can appear black, or purple or even brown-ish - awesome. But red is pushing it. The engine ran fine on the 270 mile trip home, but needs some paint, polish and detailing I need to give it a baseline service, oil and filters have already been done. But a refresh of the ignition system is on the list - can't say I'm looking forward to it The leather is going to need just a light titivation - some I looked at were way worse. These do like to rust. I've got some work on the outer sills to do, but I'm hoping that will be wire brush and treat and Dinitrol rather than the welder. There is patch needed in the passenger footwell above the jacking point. I'm not sure if that caused the stinky wet carpets, or the stinky wet carpets caused it. I've got a few 100% reversible mods planned. Rumour has it these things are rare, they only built just over 1000, and there maybe as few as a 10 or so left (quite a few more Jags though) I want to get some later model wheels. Keep those ones for the collectors in the loft. Those tyres are pretty spendy with that much sidewall. A new headunit, as the autochanger is missing, as is my collection of cassette tapes. DAB and Bluetooth are what I want. Once the sills/footwells are 100% and I've stemmed any leaks, I'll change the carpets - a ruby red would suit the car IMHO Keep an eye out for me on the hard should, or at a fuel station as I go and see my Mum in Poole later

A fine effort.
I've recently moved my S-Type on due to horrific rot in one of the sills and had convinced myself I didn't want another Jag at this point. This isn't helping.

Been a bit quiet on this one, as the car has been in storage. But a couple of things have been at the top of the list. The rain water leaks into the footwells are still a work in progress, thankfully xj40.com has some very good info on the subject. Replacing of all the ignition components needs doing too. These engine have effectively 2 x 6cyl ignition systems, one bank can fail, filling the cats up with fuel, with disastrous results. So spent a calm couple of hours pulling out 12 plugs, luckily they indicate the engine is in good health. The rotor arm was about due I think The other really dodgy area I've found was the battery ] The positive terminal (on the right) was in serious danger of shorting out on the frame of the battery cradle. So strip it all out, and get out the rust converters and primers Then put it all back together, painted and with the proper battery on a cut off The welding and work I've got to do on the underside will have to wait, I'm working outside on this one, and the weather doesn't look good enough. So I hope to put in the modern head-unit over the weekend. But the new wheels turned up today. These are known as 20 spokes, and are 16" compared to the original 15's The original tyres are 12 years old, and a very expensive size. Beside if my car was a few months newer, it would have had the 20 spokes I believe - so hardly a change to upset the purists too much So a couple of questions - the 16" tyres are H-rated to 130mph, way faster than I intend to drive, but the car originally had Z-rated more than 149mph. Do I have to change them ? I want to get the wheels refinished. But the centre caps holding the motifs are plastic. I'm assuming therefore powder coating is off the agenda, as I'll end up with two colours - is this true ? Thanks for looking

Take the wheels to a proper alloy wheel specialist - they should be able to colour match the silver on the centre caps to ensure that the rims are done in the correct colour - the colour (basecoat) is normally water based it is only the clear lacquer that goes over the basecoat that will be powder coated - I have someone that I can recommend for the alloys but it depends upon where you are based - otherwise a nice find of nice motor

Absolutely - I had some good results on my battered Morris Oxford Traveller seats - these should be a walk in the park in comparison.

On tyre ratings my understanding is that basically yes you need to match the cars capabilities to have no issues with insurance etc. Whatever the handbook says or it’s an issue. Looks nice on those new alloys James

You did well with the plugs, I remember years ago I spent approx 14hrs changing the plugs on an XJ12 because the buggers were seized in and most were trying to take the threads with them. If I rememeber right, I had to remove the fuel rails and some other stuff. *shudder*

Very few of the plugs had any kind of line of sight for anything straighter.
