For me I think it's a shame that many owners will probably decide not to bother testing their cars now. Not because the history will go missing, but because even the best of us can miss things. I once had a lot of work done on a car by a respected marque specialist, and when he put it in for MOT it failed because it had no brake lights. He'd forgotten to reconnect the switch when putting the car back together. If the car hadn't gone for a test who knows how long it would've been before that was spotted, maybe not until someone had run into the back of it. I'd like to think that the "friendly" tester mentioned earlier in this post would at least mention to the owner of the car that it had a problem that needed sorting, even if he didn't actually fail it when he should have done.

Having just read all 4 pages
This is my take on it
1) deaf traps on the road?
Having been a MOT tester myself I don't think it's the older cars you need to worry about
You could have a year old fiesta with a headlight out tyres below the limit and no cat and cracked screen all fails and only the tyre would make it unsafe but yet it's not even old enough to be tested
It could have been in an accident and the suspension is bent and the wheels are pointing all over the place
Etc etc you get my point ( age doesn't make it unsafe the owner does)
2) Yes I do think some people will use this to there advantage but it will be a very small number
But it's not going to be a cheap way round motoring because a 40+ Year old car isn't cheap in the first place plus they need more maintenance to keep them going so you would still be better off buying a 20 year old fiesta with an MOT for £500
3) history
I recon most owners of a 40 something car are going to keep getting their cars MOTd each year for proof or mileage and road worthyness just because you don't need to do by law doesn't mean you can't have it MOTd
And as a buyer it's something you may look for and if it is its likely to put you off buying that car then so be it
In the same way you may not want to by a car that has a Cat D or C insurance loss in its past
Or a low mileage car with no proof of mileage or service history all these will affect the sale price so as a owner or buyer the choice is yours
4) when it comes to buying a car weather it's 50 years old or 5 years old
You never take the owners word for anything and you always inspect it your self and make your own mind up
So in summary
Is it good or bad I don't think it's going to make any difference there isn't enough 40+ vehicles about to matter

For what it is worth I'm more confident buying an old car, say pre 1980, without taking a tame mechanic along to inspect it than I would be with something from this century. This is due entirely to the fact that the older car will be mechanically very simple and is unlikely to have factory fitted plastic covers / trim over everything to conceal the rust until it is too late.

For now. the fact that 40 years is rolling means that shortly there will be 80s cars included and there are plenty of 80s cars with plastic over the sills etc and 130 to 150mph capability. Of course these cars have been driven in a rotten condition for years, the MOT is extremely limited anyway in the face of low quality structural repairs that once undersealed cant be checked. Many of them added nothing to the structural integrity. Speaking from experience. |
