re. the scottish islands cars... I used to live on a remote wee island in the hebridies, and yes, the real scrappers were just shoved off a cliff years back. This changed a while back for environmental reasons, and now I believe there is a big scrapyard on the island where loads of wrecks just rot into the ground. As its so far from mainland by ferry and ferry costs for freight are so high, once metal gets to the island, it very rarely comes back to be recycled etc as the scrap value just doesnt cover the costs and hassle of getting it to a scrap merchant.
As for cars in peoples gardens - you can see in a few of the above pics that it is common practice for someone to buy a car, then when it dies, they buy another the same/similar, and keep the dead one as a source of spares. this often happens several times before they change to a different marque. My grandpa used to run toyota cressida`s for a while - I remember one good runner and 2 others in the weeds at the back the garden for spares. Due to the salty air most cars have damatically shorter lifespans.

now this may be bending the rules of this thread but this thing was truly abandoned; a year in a barn, and a year in a pile of cowshit. needed engine and gearbox six months later, MOTd.
