It's a while since I signed up here so can't remember the process
I run a forum and have turned off the automated approval of new members. This way if there's no valid info in the application I have 3 choices, either contact the applicant by their provided email or approve their membership or just delete outright. Of course this means more work for me but it helps keep the idiots out
I've also appointed a couple of long standing members as mods who are more than happy to keep an eye on the place in my absence. It's not fool proof but certainly helps in 90% of the cases
I see what you mean about the spam posts here as my landing page is set to recent posts
Hotwire has the option of blocking particular usernames, domains or IP addresses but the issue is that a lot of spammers use auto generated details or stolen Usernames that aren't relevant to the signup
