Starting in 1997 with a Beige 1980 Mini 850 city, swapped in a 998 engine and mayfair trim. It also had 5x10 100+ Alloys and centre exit exhaust. It looked like this, but isn't this as I sold it to a mate who rolled it. 075 by jack chevelle, on Flickr It was replaced by a 1989 Astra CD. Which was written off by some Mongolian fruit pickers in a rented Mondeo. My first Golf. 1983 GTI, ended up with a TSR 1.9 engine, koni adjustables and mk2 16v Brakes. Untitled by jack chevelle, on Flickr I picked up another Mk1 GTI, a Helios Blue campaign which was sold on very quickly. And a 1979 Scirocco. Untitled by jack chevelle, on Flickr I then moved on from VWs and bought a 1972 Chevrolet chevelle. It needed more work than I could justify... Untitled by jack chevelle, on Flickr So it went and was replaced by a 1969 Pontiac Firebird. Untitled by jack chevelle, on Flickr The Firebird was sold as I wanted something more sporty. Instead I bought a 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7. Untitled by jack chevelle, on Flickr I needed a daily but couldn't find a decent Mk4 Golf GTI so I bought a 2003 BMW 318ci (the later 2.0 16v, not the 1.9 8v) 017 by jack chevelle, on Flickr Which went when I bought a 2002 Golf GTI Untitled by jack chevelle, on Flickr Then back to BMW with a 2004 330ci. 112 by jack chevelle, on Flickr

This is basically a thread to make us young folk jealous of you slightly older folk. Muahahaha... One more reason for you youngsters to be jealous: even our driving school cars are proper retros today. Mine was a golf mk2 gtd! Nana-nana-naaah-naaah not to rub it in (much)...but while passing the fays waiting for my test date to come around I was chief chauffeur for most of the family , so this involved driving (apart from my r5) my grans r5 auto , granddads 3500 p6 , a mini special and various commercials including land rovers , mazda b1800 and a brace of hi aces. plenty of variety!

Not quite as retro, but still.. This thread really makes you think about how the roads have changed. I was buying Chevettes, ladas, Maxis ect on a whim, because they were available and affordable. Its changed alot since then. In fact my second Clubman Estate had done just under 30k when I bought it for £800. Never painted, never welded and very well looked after. Couldnt dream of doing that now. Glad I did when I could.

Chronologically in the order I aquired 'em in, only 6, 22 and 25 are still in my possession. Probably forgetting some cars I just swapped.
1: '80 Opel Kadett D - first car, loved it! Regrettably sold to some blokes wanting it for rallycross. 2: '00 Opel Combo B - bought because it would be cheaper to run, lots of fun road trips all over Europe with this one! Sold local, still see it sometimes! 3: '79 Opel Kadett C - Bought as a second car, found stacked in a barn for over 10y, sold due to biiig rust-problem, surprisingly someone actually welded it and it's still on the road! 4: '92 Peugeot 309 - always liked the design, bought for a crate of beer on a Saturday night, drove it a couple of weeks then sold it to a mate who'd bought a 309 GTI without interior. 5: '94 Opel Vectra A - fantastic car!!! although a diesel I've had a craving for another one ever since. First car i truly modified, this is the one that set me of! Sadly this particular one caught fire, in a parking lot, at the airport, at 3AM. Surprisingly a cleaner helped me save it, after which I replaced the entire loom. Only to find out later that it was the starter motor that had caused the fire, I found this out when it set itself on fire again a few weeks later. 6: '76 Opel Kadett C Caravan - went out to buy a roof rack, bought the car it sat on as well. Parents not impressed. Still own this as it's quite rare being a C1 version and I very much like the shape of these cars! (The one in the pic <---) 7: '96 Opel Omega B - Bought this cheap, had the 2.2 petrol engine, drove it a couple of weeks, then decided it was too far gone and parted it out. Surprisingly quick for something that weighs about the same as a house. 8: '90 Opel Kadett E Combo - Always wanted one of these, finally found one that was not rotten and bought it. Had too many cars at the time and was persuaded by a friend to sell it to him. He left it in his drive for the next 4 years doing nothing with it after which a big flood claimed it and rendered it FUBAR. Sad! 9: '78 Opel Kadett C City - Funny little thing bright red, stood at the scrapper, no documentation, bought for the parts so dismantled it. 10: '94 Opel Vectra A - Bought unseen, only discovered it was a 5 door when it was delivered. Don't like 5 doors so sold it on to some blokes who forgot the paperwork, yet never came back for it even thought I called multiple times. Probably in a ditch somewhere in Nigeria! 11: '80 Opel Kadett D - The same one as n° 1, bought it back via-via before they rally-crossed it. Restored it, then sold it on after the oil-pump gave up on the motorway. Still owned by the guy I sold it to as i recall. 12: '92 Rover Mini British Open - probably the car I regret selling most! Such a fun little thing, no rust at all! Stored in a dry garage now with 28 other mini's as part of a collection. 13: '74 Opel Kadett C Caravan - bought for parts, was made a nice offer so sold it without removing the parts. To my knowledge, still with the same owner. 14: '94 Opel Omega A - 2.3TD model, fantastic car, drove like you were on a cloud! Did 50.000km in this in a single year, néver let me down! Would like another, but it's very hard to find a good station-wagon! This particular one was scrapped due to rust. 15: '00 Opel Omega B - Station-wagon, bought because SWMBO thought I should have "ONE sensible car". Drove well, broke down A LOT!!! Nearly everything went wrong. Would not buy another! Sold for export to Russia. 16: '04 Opel Omega B - Somehow ended up with another of these, 2.5 BMW engine, pulled surprisingly well, luckily sold it before things started to break down. 17: '90 Opel Kadett E - Always wanted one, bought because it was cheap, should've looked better as it was obviously crashed into something. Hard. Sold for Rallycross. 18: '04 Volvo XC90 - Father-in-laws, D5-engined, 370.000km on the clock, magnificent machine, waaaaay too expensive to insure/tax. Sold for export to Morocco. 19: '06 SAAB 9-5 - Superb 2.3 turbo engine, would take another in a heartbeat. Sadly discovered the previous owned had not been too honest about the odometer. Blew the turbo on the way back from Italy, took some metal scrapings in the engine I suppose, never drove the same again. Regrettably sold as I couldn't justify a new engine whilst restoring my house. 20: '04 Volvo S80 - Given to me as it had a broken clutch. Wanted to repair it but didn't want to do a clutch on the driveway, mid-winter. So sold it for export to Croatia. Had somewhat 400.000km on the clock. 21: '90 Volvo 340 - Variomatic, felt like you were in grandma's sofa. Very unique feel to it! Bought because my GF needed and "auto". Since it was a 5 door I sold it when she didn't need an "auto" anymore. Still see it locally sometimes. 22: '85 VW T3 panel van - Inherited from my granddad who bought this new in '85. Still in my possession, I have plans to convert this into a camper! 23: '83 E28 520i - Superb car! 35 year old and drove better then some moderns I've driven. Sold to a student who wanted it as his first car! 24: '96 Volvo 460 - Bought for less then the Apple Magic Mouse I found in the boot was worth. Broken clutch, repaired and sold. No regrets. 25: '03 E39 520d - Touring, sensible GF wanted a sensible car for baby-transportation-purposes. Drives well, lacks power, very cheap to run! Wouldn't mind swapping for a 520i but can't seem to find a decent one. Still in my possession! 26: '04 Hyundai Accent - Dunno why I bought this, someone offered it cheap "because the brakes are f*cked". Topped of the brake fluid which solved the problem and sold it on. 27: '94 VW Polo coupe - Funny little thing, had been in an accident and although MOT said it was fine I strongly suspected the chassis to be bent. Sold for parts (althought I suspect the buyer to be just driving it around) 28: '04 Ford Mondeo - dreadful diesel, can't see why anyone would want one. Got rid of it quick, sold for export to Albania. 29: '03 E39 520d - Touring, bought because it was offered cheap, belt had snapped and the owner did not grasp the difference between a normal multi-V-belt and a timing belt. Replaced for about €3 and "magically" repaired the engine. Colleague drives this daily now.

Realise I've got 20 years motoring under my belt and very little to show for it...I'm trying to go retro I promise. Just no space, no garage extortionate parking permits and three kids under 4 😵
1985 Vauxhall Nova 1.2 Merit. Ok so this was my mum's really but I learnt to drive in it and had it when I wanted it without all the costs like insurance. Blew two head gaskets (may have been related to me keeping doing 60 in 2nd) and my dad got rid.
1997 Renault Clio RT 1.2. My first real car. I was 23 by this point had moved pop north and racked up loads of miles in it. Surprisingly reliable but wanted something faster...
1999 Golf GTI mk4 (1.8T). Possibly the shittest car I owned and wasn't even that fast. I picked up an immaculate low miler and treated it like royalty. In the time I owned it I replaced pretty much every bush on the car it rattled so much, the alternator went, the camshaft tensioner broke (cambelt fell off), water pump went taking the head gasket with it, both front windows got stuck closed, both front windows got stuck open, clutch master cylinder went, brake switches galore, clutch pedal snapped, numerous new coils, aerial fell off. This is all I can remember several years on and it didn't even get thrashed. It got driven in to the back of twice. Gave it to he ex when we split up as a gesture of goodwill (I genuinely thought). The clutch then went on her and someone tried to nick it causing loads of damage. Still shown as on the road so maybe it wasn't all bad in the end!
2003 Skoda Octavia VRS. Ridiculously fast. Loads of coil packs again. Unreliable and finally fell out of love with modern(ish) VAG (would still like a mk2 Golf I admit though). Sold it and left the north, moving to London.
2000 Focus Mk1 1.6. Technically my wife's car when we got together but went on and on and on in London for absolute pennies. Drove it to Germany and it was a pleasure from start to finish. We were offered the father In laws immaculate Focus mk2 so sold it for pennies in 2016. Immediately regretted it and was devastated two days later when the Met wanted to know why they'd had to pull it out of a canal in west London.
2009 Focus Mk2 1.6. The current steed and officially the newest car I ever plan to own. It's been well looked after in a previous life and I want to keep it forever. Hopefully supplement it with something retro like a 205 or 309 when the times comes and I can finally live my teenage dream of messing about with cars...

Since i've been in the motor trade 47 years and driving for 46 i've had more cars than I can count, but well in excess of 300, everthing from a Mini van to an E type Jag and from a Rolls ShadowII to a Maxi. But a couple of highlights......
I learned to drive in my first car which was a 1956 MG Magnette ZA and took my test in an Escort MkI 1300 Sport I'd had an E type and an Alpine Tiger before I was 21 My Mini Van had an Olds Toronado engine in the back. I've had 11 MkII Zephyrs and Zodiacs including 2 rare Farnham estates plus 8 MKIIIs and 3 MKIVs Ive has a 61 Ford Galaxie with a pro comp 390 in it, a 64 T-Bird, bone stock and a 72 Aussie Fairmont wagon with a 351. I owned my LHD Volvo 122S Estate from 82-2011 (the car I most regret selling) And more Triumphs (my first love) than I can remember, a habit that remains to this day, with my Vauxhall powered Toledo and Dolomite Sprint.

I think my list will demonstrate that I hold on to cars for quite some time bearing in mind I started driving in 1992!
1974 Mini 850 - Pageant Blue. Mileage unknown. First car owned but was a hand-me-down from the Grandparents (god bless 'em). Every time one of us Grandkids started driving we were given it until we could afford our own car. It was pretty rotten when I had it and when it went to my older brother (he failed his test twice) it eventually got scrapped.
1976 Mini 1000 OGC 315P - Red with white roof and bonnet stripes. Mileage unknown. The first car I bought and it was off an old school mate who was an apprentice mechanic at the time. 10" Cosmic alloys with sticky Dunlops, XR3i front seats and a Webber 45DCOE. It didnt run at the time and I ended up spending almost as much as I paid for the car getting the 45 to work with the engine. Carb-iced like a biatch when it got remotely cold! Sold to a bloke in West Molesey one weekend. The next Saturday I got a call from the Police saying my car had been stolen! Err no I recently sold it ocifer! Long gone now.
1990 Renault 5 GT Turbo H490 VUS - Glacier White. My first proper fast car and it was a huge jump from the Mini performance wise. Handling wasn't quite as good but everything else was. Wish I'd never sold it as it was all original apart from an exhaust and recirc DV. Girlfriend (now wife) necessitated a house deposit! It's still around up near Doncaster I believe!
1994 Renault Clio 1.8 16V N272 OUC - Naples Red. Bought when I still had the 5 which went into storage. Loved this but not quite as raw as the 5. The leather and the power steering sort of made up for it! Long gone now!
2001 Ford Focus 2.0 Zetec ESP Y978 LTF - Moonstone. First normal (read boring) car. Surprisingly nippy and handled well for what it was. Just did everything well and aside from annual service, consumables and a water pump it was super-reliable. Written off whilst stationary by a hit and run stolen car!
2004 Audi A3 3.2 Quattro Sport VN04 VMK - Light Silver Metallic. Bought without much homework done and out of a need for a car quickly after the Focus was written off. Proper quick car that was a real sleeper in the looks department after I took the 3.2 badges off it! Stretched cam-chain of death occured costing me small fortune at the time and a lot of stress. Got rid 14 months after the engine rebuild when I could feel the judder returning!
2013 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi current car - Midnight Sky. After the stress and cost of the Audi I wanted reliability and normality and after such a good experience with the Focus I decided to visit my nearest dealer and got a good trade-in with the Audi on an ex courtesy car. Had it 4 years now and all its needed so far is tyres and brake pads.
Sorry, very poor retro content! Not to be rectified anytime soon unless I find a Skyline R32 for reasonable money (read highly unlikely)!!!

(currently in fix) 7. 106 1.4 Xsi Red - my 1st posh car (electric windows and mirrors) bought with a shagged engine, put my 1.3 rallye engine in it ou of the white 106, made a coilover converion for the front, drove it loads, won the LMSC 12 car championsip, blew the engine up, built and fitted another 1400 lump sold to a mate 8. 205 Gti 1.6, white phase 1, had a hella reflective strip on the back. engine toubles. was crying out for proper injection (not Guess spit and hope Motronic with the flappy flap thing) should have never sold it. 9. 306 XRDT, curse word horrible thing, slower and thirsty than my ZX, stank like wet dog. went round corners well when you hit the bumpstops. 10. Passed test in '90 but didn't get a car til '02. 1.6 Felicia, (in black not silver). Reliable, pretty swift and understated. No problems til someone broke into it, smashed dash and bonnet - got written off due to complexity of electric issues resulting 2.0 Aircooled T25 Westy LHD on a W plate. Was a lot of fun if not a money hole to run. took it all the way to Italy and back in one jaunt. SWMBO was driving on another trip back from france - wasn't looking at temp gauge and we cooked the engine. Got a recon one fitted. Got stolen weeks later. I always attributed it to some nefarious operations at the VW garage - seemed too much of a coincidence. Also - with the wealth of CCTV love in the UK , it's amazing there was no footage of a bright green brick being broken into, stolen, and driven from N London probably to a ferry port. 1.6 Saab 99 - early one with the Triumph engine. Got it for £800. Was fantastic - got so many admirers out when driving. Wasn't getting enough use sadly and repairs were tricky to arrange so sold on to another RR'ider. Worst moment - driving home through Muswell Hill / Tottenham / Highgate with the horn jammed on. Sooooo annoying. 1.4 TDi Audi a2. Not retro but a classic in the making. Loved this motor. Got it remapped from 75 to something like 115 hp making it a lot of fun given it's weight. Latter days it developed a boot leak, which is a problem when you have the main battery in the boot, but it didn't matter as it got totalled in the rain at night by a combination of me and a cabby both messing up at a junction. Bye-bye little tank! 2.0 Forester Turbo 140k miles Darth Vader's country car. Loved this - ebay for 1k, though not without issues of massively heavy clutch that left my foot numb in traffic. Sold it for peanuts after 2 years as repairs to power steering, clutch, oil seals, parking dents made it uneconomonical to keep on road 2.0 Forester Turbo AUTO with 75k miles. Went for an upgrade (half mileage, no clutch!) last year. Lovely thing, sullied only with a massive dent from a head-butting deer (it didn't make it ) in France. Very quick, comfy and practical. Want to lower it and put the rims off the old black one back on it. Problems at the moment - wind noise from frameless windows at speed; oil smoke when warming through from leaky turbo seal, aforementioned dents, frayed seatbelt, another mystery leak in the boot and a rattle in the headlining.
