Something I've been thinking about after reading something ElWoody wrote recently. Ever look back on your car history and wonder? I think about certain cars and the memories attached to them, and some I wish I'd never sold and likewise some I'm glad to be shot of. There seems to be a trend here... Yes, admittedly I'm a V.A.G. fan. Fer anomalies in the general theme but (sadly) mostly modern with a few notable exceptions. I'll start: 1985 MK2 Volkswagen Jetta C 1.6D 4+E, Maritime blue with matching light blue interior 1985 Peugeot 205 GTI 1.6 Phase 1, Black (Bought 2 years ago, waiting patiently to be fixed up) 1990 MK2 Volkswagen Golf GTI, Royal Blue Pearl, bought with a 165BHP GTI Engineering engine which blew up at 130+MPH against a 20v Coupe Turbo. STill have this, sat in the garage with a 195BHP PD150 1.9 TDI engine and 6-speed gearbox in the front. Need to finish stripping the donor car and get it running. 1990 Daihatsu Charade, 1.0 Carburettor 3-cylinder in silver. My First car age 14, and taught me a lot about cars. Burnt the hair off my face when the carb backfired... 1991 MK2 Volkswagen Golf 1.6 Diesel, Terracotta Pearl. My first Volkswagen at seventeen, bought for €180. Got me interested in modifying cars, and started my Volkswagen affliction (though my love for MK2s can be traced back to a car my mother had in 2000, G728AAD, a red MK2 turbodiesel. 1992 Mazda 323 black 1.3, My first car when I got my license, due to draconian insurance laws! Lasted 8 weeks, chopped it in for: 1992 Mazda Familia Interplay, 1.5 in black. At 18 I could barely believe how fast this was. 1.5 Twin Cam 16v unit that gave 120BHP in a car that weighed 850kg. Japanese grey import and top spec, utter hoot to drive. Horrendous fuel economy and €3500 a year insurance costs meant it didn't last long. 1992 MK1 Golf Cabriolet, Inca Blue 1.8 carb. Leaked like a sieve but good fun in the summer. 1994 B4 Passat Estate 1.9 Turbodiesel. Got it for €50 from a mate who had done it in rat-style. Drove it for a bit and pulled the engine out for a mate's T3 Syncro conversion. 1994 Peugeot 405 1.9 XUD in fetching gold. Pulled out of a hedge the owner said if we could get it out we could have it. Drove it with an exhaust rotten through (where I was living it was rare to see a roadworthy car) and sold it on. 1994 MK3 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.4 in Klassikrot Uni. 60 horsepower of fury. My first proper modified roadgoing VW. Fitted a full GTI exterior and interior and gold BBS wheels. Drove it like I stole it. The only car I've ever had that you could drive it the whole time everywhere flat out. Taught me about lift-off oversteer with grippy fronts and flat-bald rear tyres. Still have it sat in the back of the shed. 1995 Toyota Corolla saloon 1.3. One of the most boring cars I'e ever driven. Drove it with a slipping clutch so much it wore the splines clean off the input shaft of the gearbox... 1997 Volkswagen Vento 1.4 Atlantic in black metallic. Another random find. Paid €70 for it with a leaking head gasket, bottle of K-Seal and drove fine for 3 months. Sold it to a young lad for €250 who blew it up, put another engine in and kept it for years. 1997 Opel Vectra 1.6. utterly horrendous piece of poop which guzzled fuel, constant CELs and everyone thought was a cop car due to lovely white paintwork, no hub caps and a plethora of aerials. Hateful barsteward. Fast at 18 however. 1997 MK3 Volkswagen Golf 1.4 CL. Surf Green, the reason I bought it. Lovely colour and a very rare one. Sold it to girlfriend's brother who needed a first car. He lost the keys and it sat for years before disappearing 1997 MK3 Volkswagen Golf GL TDI. Got this one for free off a mate when I needed a car (had been rear-ended in my modified estate Passat). Had loads of random GTI, VR6 etc. bits and pieces so fitted them all. White with white OZ Racing Superturismo 17" wheels and slammed on evilbay coilovers, andthe fuel temp sensor fooled so it would barely idle but give great power. Smokey fooker and was a rotten as hell. My '94 MK3 was fine, on this I fitted the GTI arches and sill covers as both were rotten to hell. got cut up when rear shock tower sheared off. Engine lived on in a lovely 1987 MK2 Golf a mate had. When I cut it up i found that most of the floorpan was made up of rusty sections and washing machine metal urethane-bonded on. Never have a MK3 after that. 1997 Renault Laguna 1.8 in lovely red. Got a call saying if it was gone within the hour I could have it for nowt. Drove it until it blew up, sold the wheels for €200 and squashed it with an excavator. Feel guilty as it was immaculate! Will continue later... Sam

Nissan Cherry Hatchback (White) Renault 5 Turbo Raider - Replica (Dark Blue Met)
From here I have a rough idea of order again (I think!)
Ford Escort Mk3 Diesel Van (White) VW Polo Mk1 Breadvan (White) Peugoet 309 D (White) Lada Riva Estate (Blue) Godawfulthing BMW 730i (Dark Grey Met) owned twice Suzuki SJ 413/Samurai Soft-top (Black) Peugeot 205 1.9 GTi (White) Subaru Impreza WRX JDM Classic (White) Suzuki Vitara 1.6 soft-top (Black) Citreon ZX Diesel (Forgot the colour) freebie Vauxhall Corsa Combi Diesel Van (Red) Ford Focus Diesel (Blue Met) Subaru Impreza Classic UK Turbo 2000 Wagon (Red) Mercedes S-Class 320 CDI (Silver) Vauxhall Corsa Mk2 (Red) Renault Megane Coupe/Convertible (Silver) VW Golf TDi Mk6 (Black) Still got but eldest lad has it Audi TT Quattro S-Line TDi Roadster (White) Still got Range Rover Evoque Dynamic (Grey Met)
Phew! I've probably missed a few but that's the general gist of it

Weren't retro when I had them, but now.......
1)Black Mini Clubman 1275 GT, with gold stripes, taught me a lot like how not to lift off in the wet on a roundabout, how fast you could go over a speed bump in the supermarket car park before your rear seat passenger threatened to punch you very hard if his head made another dent in the roof and how to give lots of money to an old school mechanic to fix it again!! Sold it onto a mate NRY 498P 2)White Renault 9 1.4 with beige interior, my Mum insisted I had something sensible as I'd made her sick whilst driving her in the Mini, sold after 6 months to buy next door's... 3)Black Capri 2.0S with Wolfrace's & Firestone ditchfinders. Always looking out of the side window of that one as I rotated down the road! 4)Yellow Mk2 Escort, log book said 1.1 Popular Plus Auto, semi rally spec with a 2.1 Pinto, RS2000 interior and a bag of cement in the boot. 5)Blue Mk4 Cortina 2.0 Ghia, swapped it for the Escort after the oil pump failed and lunched the cam and followers. Loved that car, wished I'd never traded it but... 6)Red Astra GTE 16v, first new car, thrashed the knuts off it and did see 149mph on the digital speedo down the A127 but probably about 130 max. 7) Green Austin Ambassador with a blowing exhaust, quick fix while the Astra was having a new gearbox fitted after I shunted fifth gear through the casing 8)Grey Astra GTE 16v, J33 STU, treated that one a bit better I think, still got a phone call from the salesman I traded it in with to ask "had it ever been rallied!",but as he lost me my personal plate, sod him. 9) Grey Orion Ghia 130bhp, bit of a Q car, quick & anonymous 10) Red Mk2 XR2 D55 DEF, most fun you can have with 90bhp, want another one. 11)Yellow Renault Megane Coupe 16v, loved the electric rear side windows!! 12)Green New Beetle Turbo, 135k didn't miss a beat Then onto one car duty for parent duties, but still got my GT6 in storage & a '71 Beetle for going slowly but very loudly!

Always fancied a Citi Golf, what did you think to it? I've got four kids under ten and I just can't do the new stuff. The in-laws tried to foist a Peugeot Tepee on us a few years back - it was horrible and made the kids car sick. Daily is my '88 Renault 21 Nevada 7 seater. Not that convenient that it took three years from when I found it in a field to being on the road. But now we're retro and reliable! Great write-up and pics retrolegends - I like those old photos. I couldn't do such a history - got no photos of any of the bangers sadly.

blimey , this could be a long and winding road , though probably not as long a list as some with 33 years of motoring under my rse! ill only include cars that I have properly owned and used on the road and omit parts cars (many) , bangers raced (possibly more) , quick flips (surprisingly few) and other radom rides that I have had semi/near permanent use of (quite a lot). bear in mind that chronological order here relates to purchase order , I never have been very good at letting go of stuff , so there are a lot of overlaps!! after starting to drive on private property aged 8 or 9 my fist purchase at 12 was.... 1. 1971 mini clubman saloon (only sold on last year) , which was a project and saw quite a bit of action after I passed my test , which I took in #2. 2. 1985 renault 5tse. the only new car I have ever owned , which was a legacy gift from my grandfather who died when I was a youngster. a fabulous little car but was traded in for #3. 3. 1980 s1 924 turbo. (still owned). fortunately in 1986 17 year olds could actually insure decent cars , though in fairness we did have a pretty decent broker who reeealy looked after me! now a family heirloom. 4. 1981 range rover. the beige beauty , what a machine. had this for about 20 years , if it hadn't taken such a hammering from the coastal salt air I would probably still have it. 5. 1976 s3 109 diesel land rover truck cab with custom flat bed. despite being a useful workhorse it was officially the slowest p.o.s in the history of the world ...ever! 6. 1972 s3 lightweight air transportable radio car. the exact opposite of the s3 diesel , this puppy was a rocket , so much fun. 7. 1980 golf gli cabriolet. (still owned) she's a keeper and currently best described as in "mid long term resto" condition. 8. 1979 2.3 mk2 granada. previously owned by a deaf guy , truly the most squeak & rattle free car I have ever owned. was a narking about/battle bus/night club taxi-mobile. sadly met demise by sh#t-planing (same theory as aqua-planning , different media...you get the idea) into a granite hedge at about 20mph.... shame , it drove beautifully. 9. 1986. mk1 caddy in factory black. did everything , went everywhere , the swiss army knife of vehicles. loved it! 10. 1988. Renault 5gtl. bought as a cheapy cheap commuter for a couple of hundred quid , got 3 or 4 years very cheap motoring. I'm just a sucker for fives , always wanted a gtt...sadly now gone way past what I would pay for one! 11. 1989 827 vitesse hatchback. bought for £500 from my step dad , properly epic car. a few little niggles and the thought of all the ageing rover electrics led me to (stupidly) moving the old thing on , on the upside it was replaced with #12. 12. 1995 v2 wrx saloon. the itch that had to be scratched. fortunately I just about crept in before they gained full on #'*ker-mobile status. I always had a grin on my chops driving it (apart from the all to regular fuel stops) !! 13. 1989 Suzuki samurai soft top. bought as a weekend toy , ended up as one of the best dailies ever. cheap , fun , reliable , fixable , mod-able. what's not to like?! 14. 1997 pug 106 independence...slap bang up to date with my current daily. starts...stops...cheap to run....job done!! bound to have forgotten something but I think that's about it??
|
|
'80 s1 924 turbo..hibernating '80 golf gli cabriolet...doing impression of a skip '97 pug 106 commuter...continuing cheapness making me smile!
firm believer in the k.i.s.s and f.i.s.h principles.

Mine is mostly Mini or Mini-based, but here it is anyway: 1977 Leyland Mini 1000 - this used to belong to guy who worked at an exhaust centre. The back box started blowing and they had no Mini systems in stock so he looked around the stored to see what would fit. Cue one 80s Subaru front pipe, reversed and stuck on - came out the back with twin tailpipes about a foot apart. Sounded meaty! I loved this little car - had it for 2 years and did close to 30k miles in it. It was utterly rotten by the end though. Bought for £250 and sold for £275 with a week's MOT left on it... I replaced it with a '79 Morris Mini 1275GT. This was an animal. It had a 1330cc engine with an MG Metro head, a 286 Kent camshaft and an exhaust loud enough to set off car alarms. I loved this car but it was really badly set up, would never idle properly and the suspension needed work. I didn't have the knowledge to sort it so it went. My next car was a Mini 25 - effectively a re-trimmed silver coloured Mayfair with funky seats. Mine had a vinyl roof (I never found out why) and a boot seal that never worked properly. It started going rusty so it was sold on as a fixer-upper. The bloke who bought it looked at it on a dark & rainy February evening - he rang me back the next day and demanded his money back. I told him to sling his hook. Next up was a rust-free 1985 Mini Mayfair. I decided that I wanted to modify this a bit. I dropped it on to 10" Reverse Rim wheels, had Cooper S brakes, Koni dampers, a home made dashboard (including a Bus "Push Once" button as a starter), late model interior and a twin-carb 1302 engine with an MED head and Kent 266 cam. It went like hell (for a Mini, anyway), handled beautifully and looked really nice. The idler gear failed spectacularly on this, and although I replaced it all (gearbox too) I never thought it was the same. Sold it back in 2004. I then moved away from Minis and bought a Golf GTi. Granted it was a Mk3 8 valve and not particularly quick, but I was in the right place at the right time (bloke at work was selling it and needed the money). It did have horrible scabby 17" rims on it but I replaced those with the correct size 15" ones (from a VR6). It was completely standard apart from a pool ball gearknob and drove REALLY nicely. Just did everything well. Even had a personal plate on it which a previous owner had put on it - car was a '96, not a 94... (I didn't care about it - tried to sell it but no takers). Dropped it through the trade as a part-ex on my next car: Bought a 2005 Bora TDi 130 Highline (not a retro I know) as my daily. It has all the toys and is quick, reliable and does its job well. also comfortable on long distances. Looks a bit scabbier now than in the photo... And finally I have my 1981 Midas kit car which is my Mini-based retro project. Bought this in 2011 (has it really been that long???!!!) and have stripped it to a bare shell as it had sat in someone's garden for 11 years. Started out looking like this: And currently looks a bit like this:

Let's see...
Rover 416 Gsi saloon, bought for £20, stored on an old boys driveway, gave it my mate cos I couldn't be arsed with it. Don't actually know what happened to it.
Sierra XR4x4 - I loved This, was only 16 and my grandad drove it home, sadly the bodgers had been at it and while it it looked pretty it was like a cheese grater.
Sierra 2.0 GLX estate - bought in 2005 for 150 with 6 months tax and test, still being 16 my grandad used it for a few years with no issues whatsoever, I had it 1 month and wrapped it, we can all guess how and yes, full marks for stupidity. Really liked that car.
K10 Micra, had 2 of these, first was curse word and never actually moved, the second was bought for £80 at the scrappy, absolutely thrashed for 6 months, then weighed in for £80 when the ticket was up. Didn't want to but no-one wanted it and I had nowhere to keep it.
2.9 mk3 Granada - bought at 16 to have a go at bodywork with 3 months tax and test for 120 quid. My grandad loved it, ended up scrapped due to lack of storage. Nice barge that.
Ford Orion mk3 - clean but rewired by Stevie Wonder, spontaneously combusted one day.
Fiat Tipo 1.4 - first car I drove on a provisional, Argos big bore and 17" Alfa wheels. Looked quite decent but ate clutches for some reason.
3x Citroen Ax - 1 1.1, this ate gearboxes, particularly second. Gave up after the third box. My 1.0 Dimension was epic until I drove through what I thought was a puddle which actually turned out to be an inland sea. The third I found on its side on a lane, left a note and the next day dragged it home for spares.
Mk5 Escort van - saved from scrap from the company I worked for, 327k but ran like a Swiss watch. Slowest thing ever. Sold to a decorator.
Mk3 Golf TDi- nice car, but boring. A to going somewhere.
74 Beetle 1200 - bought for my 18th after a "restoration". Sold for spares after a 3 page corrosion related MOT fail. Moted this year 10 years on.
2x Renault Clio mk1 - owned but never actually drove. Both scrapped.
Mk3 Astra 1.4 - bought from a neighbour for £20 as an MOT fail, stuck a cat on and learnt to drive in it. Oil pump failed same day I passed my test. Scrapped.
Mk3 Astra 1.4 - still have This, 10 years on and done 80k in it. Full gsi rep still rocking a wheezy 1.4, soon to be addressed.
10x Vectra B - not all at the same time but consecutively. Cheap cars to buy and run, unless it's a V6. Despite what Clarkson says, they're a good budget all rounder. Plus they remind me of watching Cleland in the mid 90s.
E39 BMW - owned this one twice now and it's on 200k, mega reliable, comfy, quiet, and built like a tank in an outside lav.
Probably forgetting some, but they are the ones I remember.

1979 Mini Clubman Estate. First car after I passed my test. Spent a year getting it ready, modifying it with whatever turned up (helpful neighbour worked at breakers yard). After going to classic car shows since i was a kid this was my first very own show car. Pleased as punch, but it was a polished turd and lasted me for a couple of years. I'll never forget it. Drove it all over the place. 1978 Mini Clubman Estate. I enjoyed the polished turd so much I decided to get a decent one and do it properly, so I did. Near concourse quality when it emerged from the garage with a 1300MG Metro engine amongst many other mods. Really proud of this car, it was quick, but it wasnt nearly as much fun as the first one. My dream mini. I did afew shows for afew years but sold it when I got tired of using a very noisy solid mounted Mini everyday and trying to keep on top of stonechips and rust. Still proud of it and pleased to know its still going. Austin Maxi 1500. My first Maxi after being part of the owners club since day one. It was a decent car and I had so many plans until I found..... MG Maestro 2.0 efi. A dream car for me, always liked the look of them and couldnt resist when a good local one came up for sale with 12000 miles on the clock. Did afew subtle mods to it. It soon developed running problems so I sold it as soon as little bits of rust started to appear in various places. Ford Mk2 Granada 2.3. Driving it meant crusing it everywhere. Couldnt help it. Proper arm out the window stuff. Had it for about 3 months and it got stolen. Vauxhall Chevette. Impulse buy. Had fun. It broke. The end. Ford Escort MK6 1.6. Bought off my Aunts neighbour. Really really clean and low mileage. Such a nice car to drive. I remember being suprised quite how nice it was. Got me from A to B for a while, then one day in the wet I tapped the brake to avoid a rabbit and spanked the curb bending it quite badly. Next time, the rabbit gets it! Lada Riva 1.6. Impulse buy that truned up at the right time because i needed a car quick when I broke the escort. Amazing car. Truely amazing. Out of all the cars Ive owned, this one had the most potential but I sold it (stupid stupid) when I basicly panicked about getting parts for it. Muppet! Austin Maxi 1750. Fun. Lots of fun. And versatile. More fun. Austin Maxi 1750 HL. Had spent its life at a stables. Looked very cool with its sliding webesto sunroof and wheels and lows, but was fully minging underneath. Subframe colapsed as it tried to kill me. Nissan Micra 1.0. Drove a micra and quite liked it, work moved to miles away so it was the perfect solution to a problem. And then it got written off. Austin Maxi 1750HL. My dad became ill and passed away. This was his car, and the car I held alot of memories with. Holidays, weekends away, working on it together, dad drivin it like a demon when he had his highly tuned 'lumpy as school custard' cammed engine put in. I promised him that Id keep it for a while and take it to cornwall (the first place he took us when he bought it in '89) I did and it was faultless. Perfect. Ive actualy got a lump in my throat whilst I type this. Silly. Cars may only be a lump of metal but this was like a friend to me, or something like that. I thought Id find it difficult to sell it, but strangly I found it easier seeing the back of it once it had gone. End of an era. Some people get attached to cars if they are connected to people they have lost, but personaly everytime I looked at it or drove it, on the one hand I enjoyed it, on the other hand it felt like he was always there, but he wasnt, so it had to go. The memories of him and the car really do go hand in hand. RIP Dad Austin Maxi 1750HL. The car my dad built. To many memories to even start to think about. After dad passed I had it for a couple of years but sold it when I realised it would probably continue to sit there for a while and I didnt want to see it deteriorate, it would never be mine anyway, it would always be dads. Had to draw a line under it. Nissan Micra 1.4 SE+. A micra with a bit more go. Has taught me how legendarily good these cars are. Without doubt the most reliable car I'm ever likley to own. And suprisingly spacious when you need to fill it full of stuff. It goes from A to B to A to B to A to B and back again.

1968 Beetle, bought in 1995 as my first car when I was 17. Drove it all through sixth form, my younger brother had it off me when I went to uni. Had it back after a full body off resto, repainted it for my wedding seven years ago, put a 2-litre motor in it and went drag racing last year. 1960 Beetle, bought in my second year of uni with my student loan. Written off by a woman driving out of a car park straight into my drivers side as I was passing by. 5791UE 1968 GP LDV Beach Buggy, bought for £300, spent another £300 on it and had it on the road for Easter '98. Q113RCA. Swapped for... 1971 Karmann Ghia coupe. The buggy and another £300 saw me drag this home. Restored it in time for starting placement at Vauxhall Ellesmere Port August '99, used as a daily driver. Started drag racing in it for the 1999 season. Later owned by VW of this forum. 1966 Beetle, Bahama Blue, found on a drive in Oldbury for £500, having had a £2k resto a couple of years previous. Full service history - 2x 2" ring binders full! Bought to be a drag car, decided it was too good so repaired it, undid the bad mods and sold it on. OFK60D. 1966 Beetle bought mid '99 to replace the one above. Flip fronted, roof chopped, I got it out on track in 2000 and raced it until '05. Sold as a rolling shell complete with brand new 10.00-second legal chromoly rollcage, and scrapped 8 weeks later. MYM795D. 1970 bay window camper. White Dormobile with the best '70's stripes! 2-litre type 4 motor, bought to tow the race car. Written off when the brakes failed. 1981 type 25 camper, pearl purple, bought to replace the bay. Sold when i finished racing for half what I paid for it. 1970 Beetle, Orange 1300. Bought with no engine and needing a pair of heater channels but really original. Fixed it up into a lovely car, lowered the front and put it on Empi sprintstars. Sold to a guy in Notts who sold it to his brother down south. FDH840H 1971 Beetle, Orange 1200, bought from an old friend and pretty quickly flipped to a workmate for his 16-year old son to restore. Still being done, although the son is now in his 20's! CYD???J 1974 Beetle, bought with a mate, stripped and scrapped. 1970 Beetle, red 1500. Bought for £50! Took 3 years to restore, ended up on a '72 floorpan so registered on a K-plate. Original pan still in stock for later. Bought by my cousin for her husband's 40th birthday, resides in Leeds. 1970 Beetle, Orange 1300 donor car. Still have the pan for this one too. 1951 Beetle, swapped for my Ghia. A split window, pre-crotch cooler car, been passed around the restorers since 1995 when it came in from Sweden. All took some parts so i decided to Cal Look it. Never did, sold it when my wife got made redundant. 1970/74 Beetle drag car. Bought as a Baja bug that had been raced in the past then broken for parts. I had the body, cage and a floorpan. Started building it up into a full bodied Beetle again then changed jobs, started a family and had no spare time. Eventually finished it for the next owner up in Fife. non-aircooled cars are just daily drivers. 1993 Golf 1.8 5-door x2, one a Driver from my mum, the other a donor for the engine. 1992 B3 Passat estate, 1.8 poverty-spec. Loved it. Cost £125, went through 3 MOT'a, towed my caravan, ace. 1994 B4 Passat estate, 1.9 Td. Bought to replace the B3 but I never drove it - just couldn't bond with it. 1994 Audi A6 2.5 tdi estate, Bought from my dad and driven round for years. Sold on here. 2007 Skoda Fabia. Does what it needs to. Think that's about it!
